The moves signal a fleet refresh, but the announced routes do not establish a fixed aircraft policy across Air India’s European network.
Which Air India flights use the new 787-9?
Air India said its first line-fit 787-9—an aircraft built with its cabin configuration on Boeing’s production line—was delivered from Boeing’s Everett factory on January 11, 2026. The airline scheduled it to begin commercial service on Mumbai–Frankfurt on February 1. Air India’s delivery announcement described the aircraft as the first production widebody from the airline’s order of 470 aircraft; that figure is the order size cited by the airline, not the number delivered.
Mumbai–Frankfurt
The first announced European assignment was Mumbai–Frankfurt, beginning February 1, 2026. The aircraft has 296 seats across Business, Premium Economy and Economy, according to Air India.
Mumbai–London Heathrow
From July 1, 2026, Air India announced the new 787-9 for flights AI131/AI130 between Mumbai and London Heathrow. The airline said its second daily Mumbai–London service would continue on an upgraded Boeing 777-300ER with First Class. These are dated assignments, not a guarantee of the aircraft operating on every future departure. Check the airline’s current schedule or the aircraft details for your specific booking before relying on a particular cabin or aircraft.

Air India’s February 2026 Northern Summer Schedule release also outlined planned use of new or retrofitted Dreamliners on selected international routes. A published schedule is a plan for the stated period; it should not be read as a permanent network-wide rule. Air India’s schedule announcement provides the dated context.
What is different about the new Dreamliner cabin?
Air India describes the line-fit 787-9 cabin as designed exclusively for the airline. Its announced features include private Business Class suites, a Premium Economy cabin, Bluetooth headphone pairing at seats across all cabins, wireless charging in Business Class, new inflight entertainment and mood lighting. The 296-seat layout spans three cabins; the airline’s announcement does not establish that every feature is available on every aircraft in the wider 787 fleet.

The distinction matters because Air India is refreshing more than just newly delivered aircraft. The 787-9 is a new production configuration, while existing 787-8s are being refurbished separately. Those efforts can bring a newer cabin experience to more routes over time, but the announced program does not mean every Dreamliner has already been upgraded.
How does the London 787-9 compare with the 777-300ER?
| London service | Aircraft announced | Cabin information announced | Assignment timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI131/AI130, Mumbai–London Heathrow | New Boeing 787-9 | Business, Premium Economy and Economy; First Class not stated for this aircraft in the announcement | From July 1, 2026 |
| Air India’s second daily Mumbai–London service | Upgraded Boeing 777-300ER | First Class offered, according to Air India; other cabin details not stated in the announcement | Announced to continue alongside the 787-9 service |
The comparison is useful when choosing between flights, but it is not a promise that the aircraft will remain unchanged. Airline schedules and aircraft assignments can change, so confirm the details for your travel date. Air India’s London route announcement identifies the two services and their stated aircraft.

How the new aircraft fit into Air India’s wider refresh
Air India said its first retrofitted 787-8 had been completed and that 26 existing 787-8s were included in the retrofit program. The airline set a 2027 completion target and said the program aims to improve the onboard experience on more than 300 weekly flights to the UK, Europe and Australia. The weekly-flight figure is the airline’s stated program target, not a measurement of completed upgrades or a guarantee that every flight will use a refurbished aircraft. Air India’s 787-8 retrofit announcement gives the program details.
The first line-fit 787-9 is part of Air India’s Vihaan.AI transformation program. CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson called it the first aircraft “to be designed by and for Air India,” referring to the airline’s cabin configuration on the production line. The airline has also described the aircraft as the first production widebody from its 470-aircraft order. Those are fleet-renewal milestones, but by themselves they do not demonstrate financial results or establish a rule that 787s will serve all European destinations.

Does this mean Air India is prioritizing the 787 for Europe?
The evidence supports a limited conclusion: Air India announced a new 787-9 on Mumbai–Frankfurt and one Mumbai–London service, alongside a 777-300ER on another daily London flight and a wider 787-8 refurbishment program. Those examples show investment in the Dreamliner cabin on important European routes. They do not prove that the airline assigns 787s to every European route, or that the strategy has produced a particular commercial outcome.
For passengers, the practical takeaway is to compare the aircraft and cabin listed for the actual flight rather than assuming every departure on a route uses the same plane. For a broader view, Air India’s announcement of its first line-fit 787-9, Mumbai–London assignment and 787-8 retrofit program describe distinct parts of the transition.
