Donald Trump and Elon Musk were never lifelong friends in the ordinary sense. Their relationship was a shifting alliance between a president seeking business support and the world’s richest technology executives—first marked by policy disagreement, then by political cooperation, a public breakup, and eventually limited business-focused contact.

For investors, taxpayers, and voters, the important question is not just who was angry with whom. Their relationship affected campaign spending, electric-vehicle policy, government contracts, federal spending proposals, and Musk’s temporary role inside the administration.

Trump and Musk timeline

Date What happened Why it mattered
January 27, 2017 Trump named Musk to the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative. Musk initially accepted an advisory role despite policy differences.
June 1, 2017 Musk resigned from Trump’s advisory councils after the United States withdrew from the Paris climate accord. Climate policy created an early public break.
April–July 2022 Musk criticized Twitter’s suspension of Trump, then said Trump should “sail into the sunset.” Trump called Musk a “bullshit artist.” Their relationship became openly hostile before Musk later became a Trump supporter.
July 13, 2024 Musk endorsed Trump after the assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. This was Musk’s first public presidential endorsement of Trump.
July–November 2024 Musk used America PAC to support Trump and voter mobilization efforts. His political spending reached at least $119 million by November, according to reporting from the Associated Press.
November 12, 2024 Trump selected Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to advise the incoming administration through the proposed Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. Musk moved from campaign supporter to influential adviser.
January 20, 2025 Musk began serving as a White House senior adviser associated with DOGE. He was later described as a special government employee, not a permanent Cabinet secretary.
March–April 2025 Trump promoted Tesla at the White House, while Musk clashed with trade adviser Peter Navarro over tariffs. The alliance produced both public support for Musk’s company and visible internal disagreements.
May 30, 2025 Trump held an Oval Office sendoff for Musk. Musk’s temporary government role formally ended, although he said he would remain a friend and adviser.
June 3–6, 2025 Musk attacked Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill. Trump criticized Musk, threatened subsidies and contracts involving Musk’s companies, and the argument escalated across Truth Social and X. A policy dispute became a personal and financial fight.
June 11, 2025 Musk said some posts had gone too far and expressed regret. The two sides briefly appeared to be repairing the relationship.
July 5–6, 2025 Musk announced the America Party. Trump called the idea ridiculous. The dispute became a political break, although the proposed party was not immediately a functioning national party.
September 21, 2025 Trump and Musk shook hands at a memorial service for Charlie Kirk. The meeting indicated a public thaw, not proof that their former alliance had been restored.
May 13–15, 2026 Musk traveled with Trump to China as part of a business delegation. Their relationship appeared functional again in a limited, business-focused setting.

2017: Musk joins Trump’s advisory councils

Trump named Musk to the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative on January 27, 2017. The council brought business and labor leaders into discussions about manufacturing and employment.

Musk’s participation did not mean he agreed with the administration on every issue. That became clear on June 1, when Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris climate accord. Musk resigned from Trump’s advisory councils, saying climate change policy was incompatible with the administration’s position.

This first phase is best understood as a limited advisory relationship, not a close personal friendship.

2022: A policy disagreement turns personal

In April 2022, Musk criticized Twitter’s decision to suspend Trump after the January 6 attack, calling the ban a “grave mistake.” That statement was a criticism of Twitter’s moderation decision; it was not an endorsement of Trump’s return to the presidency.

By July, Musk was criticizing Trump directly. Musk said Trump was too old to be president and should “sail into the sunset.” Trump responded by calling Musk a “bullshit artist.” The exchange showed that the two men could agree on some technology or speech issues while still opposing each other politically.

2024: Musk becomes a major Trump supporter

The relationship changed after Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. Musk publicly endorsed Trump, writing that he “fully” endorsed him and hoped for his rapid recovery.

Musk then became one of Trump’s most important financial and organizational supporters. Through America PAC, he spent roughly $75 million between July and September, based on federal disclosures. The Associated Press later reported that Musk’s total effort to mobilize Trump voters reached at least $119 million by November.

That spending matters from a personal-finance perspective because political money can influence tax proposals, regulation, subsidies, contracts, and the policy environment surrounding companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, and other Musk-related businesses. It does not, by itself, prove that any particular policy was adopted in exchange for a contribution.

On October 5, Musk appeared with Trump at a rally in Butler. After Trump won, Musk became a regular presence at Mar-a-Lago and helped advise on personnel and policy. On November 12, Trump announced that Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy would work on DOGE, the proposed Department of Government Efficiency. The name also referenced Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency Musk has promoted.

2025: Musk enters government

Musk began serving as a White House senior adviser associated with DOGE on January 20, 2025. The administration later described him as a special government employee. That is a temporary legal status; it did not make Musk a Senate-confirmed Cabinet secretary or the head of a federal department.

His role placed a major corporate executive close to decisions involving federal spending and regulation. That created obvious questions about conflicts of interest, government contracts, and whether policies could affect Musk’s companies. Describing Musk as a “department head” would overstate his formal authority.

The alliance was highly visible. On March 11, Trump appeared with Musk on the White House South Lawn beside a Tesla Model S. Trump said he would buy a new Tesla to support Musk while Tesla faced protests and political backlash.

The partnership also had internal limits. In April, Musk publicly attacked Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro over tariff policy, calling Navarro “dumber than a sack of bricks.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt brushed off the dispute by saying, “Boys will be boys.” On April 30, Trump praised Musk’s government work but acknowledged that Musk wanted to return to running his businesses.

May 2025: The official sendoff

Trump held an Oval Office sendoff for Musk on May 30. Trump praised Musk for leading what he called the most sweeping government reform effort in generations. Musk said he would remain a friend and adviser.

The end of Musk’s formal role was tied to the temporary nature of his special-government-employee status. It was not initially presented as a hostile separation. The more serious rupture came days later over federal spending.

June 2025: The public breakup

On June 3, Musk called Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill a “disgusting abomination” and urged Republican lawmakers to reject it. His first attacks centered mainly on the legislation and its projected effect on government spending and the deficit.

On June 5, Trump said he was “very disappointed” in Musk and questioned whether their relationship would continue. The argument quickly moved from policy to personal accusations.

Musk claimed Trump would have lost without Musk’s campaign support and accused Trump of ingratitude. Trump responded that Musk was angry because the administration was changing electric-vehicle policy. He also threatened to terminate government subsidies and contracts involving Musk’s companies.

That threat should be read carefully. It was political rhetoric, not an announcement that specific contracts had already been canceled. A public statement about possible government action is not the same thing as a completed cancellation, a new regulation, or a verified change in a company’s revenue.

Musk also claimed that Trump appeared in the so-called “Epstein files” and suggested this explained why records had not been released. The allegation was unsupported. Reporting from the Associated Press said FBI officials had dismissed the broader conspiracy theory and found no evidence supporting Musk’s claim.

By June 5 and 6, Musk had agreed with a post calling for Trump’s impeachment and replacement by Vice President JD Vance. Trump said he did not want to speak with Musk and suggested Musk had “gone crazy” or “lost his mind.”

June and July 2025: A short-lived reconciliation and a second rupture

Vice President Vance and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles spoke with Musk as the administration tried to cool the conflict. Musk also spoke by phone with Trump before publicly retreating from some of his attacks.

On June 11, Musk said some of his posts had gone “too far” and expressed regret. Trump called the gesture “very nice.” The exchange created a tentative thaw, but Musk did not fully withdraw his criticism of the spending bill.

The peace did not last. By late June and early July, the two continued to disagree over the legislation. Musk floated the idea of creating a new political party, and on July 5 announced the America Party, saying the Trump-backed law would bankrupt the country.

Trump called the proposed party ridiculous and said it would add to political confusion. Musk’s announcement represented a political break, but it did not immediately create a fully established national party or guarantee ballot access in every state.

September 2025 and May 2026: A limited thaw

Trump and Musk met at a September 21, 2025 memorial service for conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Glendale, Arizona. They shook hands, and Trump said they had once had a “very good relationship.” The encounter suggested that the hostility had cooled, but it did not prove that Musk had returned to the White House or that the earlier political partnership had been restored.

In May 2026, Musk traveled with Trump to China aboard Air Force One as part of a delegation of business leaders. This was a stronger sign that the relationship had become functional again. Musk was present as a major technology and business executive, not as a White House adviser.

The most defensible description as of August 9, 2026, is selective, pragmatic cooperation. The available reporting does not establish a return to the highly visible “first buddy” partnership of late 2024 and early 2025.

What the relationship means for consumers and investors

  1. Political spending is not the same as guaranteed influence. Musk’s campaign spending gave him access and visibility, but it does not prove that Trump adopted any particular policy in return.
  2. Government threats can move markets before anything changes legally. Statements about subsidies, contracts, tariffs, or electric-vehicle policy can affect investor expectations even when no contract has been canceled or rule has taken effect.
  3. Separate political headlines from company fundamentals. Tesla’s sales, margins, competition, regulation, and demand remain distinct from Musk’s personal relationship with a president.
  4. Check formal status. Musk’s DOGE role was temporary and advisory in nature. It should not be confused with leading a Cabinet department.
  5. Be cautious with unsupported claims. The Epstein-files allegation was made during a heated online exchange and was not supported by evidence.

Was Elon Musk the head of the Department of Government Efficiency?

Musk advised and led DOGE-related work as a White House senior adviser and was later described as a special government employee. He was not a Senate-confirmed Cabinet secretary or the formal head of a federal department.

Did Trump and Musk fully reconcile?

The September 2025 handshake and their May 2026 China trip showed a public and practical thaw. The available reporting does not establish that their earlier political alliance was fully restored.

The Bottom Line

Trump and Musk’s relationship moved through four distinct stages: limited cooperation in 2017, open hostility in 2022, a powerful political alliance in 2024 and early 2025, and a public breakup over spending and policy in June 2025. Their later handshake and joint China trip suggest pragmatic cooperation, not a return to their former partnership. For anyone tracking personal finances or investments, the key lesson is to distinguish political rhetoric from enacted policy, canceled contracts, and measurable changes in a company’s financial results.
