A destination charge is the fee an automaker adds for transporting a new vehicle from its factory or import port to the dealership. It is usually printed near the bottom of the vehicle’s Monroney window sticker, immediately before the total MSRP.
For most buyers, the practical answer is simple: you generally cannot delete the charge itself, but you may be able to negotiate a lower vehicle price that offsets some or all of it. The important distinction is between the factory destination charge and extra dealer fees that merely use similar words.
What does a destination charge pay for?
The destination charge covers the manufacturer’s cost of moving a new vehicle through its distribution network to the dealership where it is sold. Depending on the vehicle, that journey may begin at an assembly plant, an import port, or another manufacturer-controlled distribution point.
You may see the charge labeled as:
- Destination charge
- Delivery charge
- Freight charge
- Transportation charge
- Inland freight and handling
It is not the same as a dealer documentation fee, registration charge, sales tax, dealer-installed product, or market adjustment. Those costs may appear on the same buyer’s order, but they pay for different things.

Destination charges apply primarily to new vehicles. A used-car dealer might add a transportation, delivery, or reconditioning fee, but that is not the original factory destination charge. Ask the dealer to explain exactly what any used-car fee covers before accepting it.
Where can you find the destination charge?
Look at the vehicle’s official Monroney window sticker. Federal law requires the sticker to show the amount charged to the dealer for transporting the vehicle to the delivery location. It also lists the vehicle’s base price, options, and the total of those amounts.
The destination charge is normally near the bottom of the sticker, just above Total MSRP. An advertised starting price may exclude the charge, while the total MSRP on the window sticker includes it.
For example, a sticker might show:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Base vehicle price | $32,000 |
| Factory options | $2,500 |
| Destination charge | $1,695 |
| Total MSRP | $36,195 |
That $1,695 is part of the vehicle’s advertised manufacturer pricing. It is separate from taxes, title and registration costs, and dealer fees.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow is the amount calculated?
Automakers commonly use an equalized delivery system. Instead of charging each buyer according to the exact number of miles between the factory and that buyer’s dealership, the manufacturer sets a charge for a model or vehicle line.
That means two buyers may pay the same destination charge even if one dealership is close to the assembly plant and the other is several states away. Picking a dealership near the factory usually does not create a freight discount.
The amount can vary by manufacturer, model, model year, and sometimes region. Consumer Reports reported destination charges ranging from approximately $1,150 to $3,250 among the models it reviewed in March 2026. Those figures are only a snapshot; the specific vehicle’s window sticker is the source to check.
Can you avoid paying a destination charge?
Usually, you cannot remove the charge as a line item
Manufacturers generally treat the destination charge as a fixed charge. A dealer normally cannot rewrite the factory window sticker, and arranging your own transportation or collecting the car near its factory usually does not eliminate the fee.

Special delivery programs do not necessarily change this. For example, a buyer taking delivery of a Chevrolet Corvette at the National Corvette Museum may still see the regular destination charge on the vehicle’s sticker.
You can negotiate the total price
Although the fee itself may remain on the buyer’s order, the dealer may have flexibility elsewhere. Possible concessions include:
- A lower selling price for the vehicle
- A dealer discount
- A manufacturer incentive for which you qualify
- Removal of optional dealer-installed products
- A credit that reduces the amount financed
Suppose a car has a $1,695 destination charge. The dealer may refuse to erase that line but agree to reduce the vehicle price by $1,000. Economically, you have offset part of the charge even though the sticker still shows it.
For that reason, negotiate the out-the-door price rather than focusing only on whether the destination line disappears. A dealer saying, “We cannot waive destination,” may be referring specifically to the manufacturer charge. That does not necessarily mean the dealer cannot discount the vehicle elsewhere.

Watch for a duplicate freight or delivery fee
A new vehicle should not ordinarily have the factory destination charge duplicated by a second dealer fee for the same transportation. Compare the buyer’s order with the Monroney sticker if you see charges described as:
- Freight
- Delivery
- Transportation
- Destination
- Dealer delivery
A second charge could represent a different service, such as moving a vehicle from another dealership to the one selling it. But the dealer should identify that service and its price in writing. Ask:
“The window sticker already lists a destination charge. What separate transportation service does this additional fee cover?”
If the explanation is vague, ask for the fee to be removed or compare another dealer’s written offer.

Destination charge versus other dealer fees
| Charge | What it generally covers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Destination charge | Factory transportation to the dealership | Confirm it appears on the Monroney sticker |
| Documentation or conveyance fee | Dealer processing of sale, title, or registration paperwork | Check whether your state caps or regulates it |
| Preparation or reconditioning fee | Dealer cleaning, inspection, or preparation | Ask what work was performed and whether the fee is negotiable |
| Dealer-installed add-on | Products such as tint, theft protection, paint coating, nitrogen, or service contracts | Decline unwanted products; they are not automatically required |
| Market adjustment | Dealer markup based on demand or inventory | Negotiate it or find a vehicle without one |
The Federal Trade Commission says dealers cannot charge you for add-ons you do not want. An add-on should not be presented as if it were part of the manufacturer’s mandatory destination charge.
How to compare the real cost of two cars
Do not compare vehicles using only the advertised monthly payment or the base price. Request a written out-the-door quote for the exact vehicle, including its vehicle identification number when available.
The quote should list:
- The vehicle selling price
- The factory destination charge
- Dealer documentation or processing fees
- Dealer-installed products and add-ons
- Sales tax
- Title, registration, and other government charges
- Every rebate or discount, including eligibility restrictions
- The final out-the-door total
Use the same information when comparing dealers. One dealer may advertise a lower starting price but add a large market adjustment or mandatory-looking add-on later. Another may show a higher advertised price but provide a lower final total.
Also ask whether the advertised price requires financing through the dealer, a trade-in, military eligibility, or a rebate that you do not qualify for. The FTC has warned dealers about undisclosed mandatory fees, financing-conditioned prices, and advertising vehicles that are not actually available.
What has changed with federal auto-pricing rules?
The FTC’s Combating Auto Retail Scams, or CARS, Rule is not a currently enforceable federal rule. The FTC withdrew it effective February 12, 2026, after court decisions vacated the rule.
That withdrawal does not make deceptive pricing acceptable. In March 2026, the FTC warned 97 auto dealership groups that advertised prices must reflect the total price, including mandatory fees. Federal consumer-protection laws and state dealer rules still apply.
For a buyer, the practical safeguard remains the same: get the complete price in writing before traveling to the dealership or signing documents, and question any fee that was not disclosed clearly.

“I understand the destination charge is printed on the factory sticker. I am comparing out-the-door prices. What is the lowest total price you can offer, including that charge, dealer fees, taxes, and registration?”
If the dealer will not reduce the selling price, ask whether it can remove optional add-ons or provide a discount that does not depend on financing. Do not judge the offer by a single fee. Judge the final amount you must pay or finance.
FAQ
Is a destination charge negotiable on a new car?
The factory destination charge is usually treated as a fixed manufacturer charge and generally will not disappear from the paperwork. However, you can negotiate a lower vehicle price, dealer discount, or incentive that offsets some or all of it.
Can I avoid the destination fee by picking up the car at the factory?
Usually not. Automakers commonly use equalized freight pricing, so picking up a vehicle near its assembly plant does not automatically remove the destination charge. Special delivery programs may still include the fee.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is a destination charge included in MSRP?
Yes. The Monroney sticker’s Total MSRP includes the base vehicle price, factory options, and destination charge. An advertised starting price may exclude destination, so compare it with the sticker and the written out-the-door quote.
What should I do if a dealer charges freight twice?
Ask the dealer to explain the second freight, delivery, or transportation charge in writing. Compare it with the Monroney sticker and determine whether it covers a genuinely separate service, such as moving the vehicle from another dealership. Reject an unexplained duplicate.
The Bottom Line
For a new vehicle, expect the destination charge shown on the Monroney sticker to appear in the transaction. You usually cannot eliminate it by choosing a nearby dealership or arranging pickup yourself. You can still reduce its impact by negotiating the total vehicle price, removing unwanted add-ons, and comparing written out-the-door offers. Never accept a second freight or delivery charge without a clear explanation of what it pays for.
