A home printer is a small purchase that can become an expensive subscription to ink, toner, paper, and replacement cartridges. The right choice depends less on the sticker price than on how often you print, whether you need color, and whether you scan multi-page documents.
For most home offices, the Epson EcoTank ET-4950 is the strongest all-round choice: it combines an ink tank, automatic duplex printing and scanning, a 250-sheet tray, and an ADF. If you print only occasionally, a cheap cartridge printer or monochrome laser model can cost less upfront. If you print hundreds of color pages each month, an ink tank or color laser usually makes more financial sense.

1. Epson EcoTank ET-4950: best overall for most home offices
The Epson EcoTank ET-4950 is the most balanced option for a household that prints worksheets, forms, invoices, schoolwork, shipping documents, and occasional color pages. It prints, scans, copies, and faxes, so you do not need a separate scanner or copier.
#1 Best Overall
- Affordable Versatility - A budget-friendly all-in-one printer perfect for both home users and hybrid workers, offering exceptional value
- Crisp, Vibrant Prints - Experience impressive print quality for both documents and photos, thanks to its 2-cartridge hybrid ink system that delivers sharp text and vivid colors
- Effortless Setup & Use - Get started quickly with easy setup for your smartphone or computer, so you can print, scan, and copy without delay
- Reliable Wireless Connectivity - Enjoy stable and consistent connections with dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz or 5GHz), ensuring smooth printing from anywhere in your home or office
- Scan & Copy Handling - Utilize the device’s integrated scanner for efficient scanning and copying operations
Epson rates it at 18 ISO pages per minute in black and 9 in color. Its 250-sheet paper tray reduces the need to reload paper, and automatic duplex printing can reduce paper consumption for longer documents. It also has an automatic document feeder and automatic duplex scanning, a useful combination when you regularly digitize two-sided paperwork.
- Connectivity: Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB, AirPrint, and Mopria.
- Controls: 2.4-inch color touchscreen.
- Current listed price: $349.99 promotional price, versus a $499.99 regular price.
- Ink claim: ink in the box for up to three years under Epson’s stated usage assumptions.
The tank system is the main reason to consider it financially. You pay more at the start than for a basic cartridge printer, but replacement ink is generally much less expensive per page at regular print volumes. Do not interpret the three-year claim as a guarantee that you will never refill it: actual consumption depends on page coverage, color use, cleaning cycles, and volume.
There is an important scanning limitation. Epson says not to put photos, stapled or clipped documents, labels, sticky notes, wet-ink originals, curled or wrinkled paper, or other unsuitable material through the ADF. Use the scanner glass for those items. The ET-4950 is also not a good fit if your main need is professional-quality photo printing.
2. Brother INKvestment MFC-T780DW: best low-running-cost alternative
The Brother MFC-T780DW is worth considering when low ink costs matter more than fast duplex scanning. It is a color ink-tank all-in-one with printing, copying, scanning, automatic duplex printing, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, USB, AirPrint, Mopria, and Brother Mobile Connect.
Recommended Free Tools
Brother lists starter-bottle yields of approximately 14,625 combined black pages and 4,400 color pages. Those are manufacturer estimates under specified conditions, not a promise for every household. Brother’s “up to three years” ink estimate assumes an average of 150 pages per month with a 60% black and 40% color mix.
The printer has a 150-sheet input tray, a one-sheet manual-feed slot, and a 20-page single-sided ADF. The key compromise is that the ADF cannot scan or copy both sides automatically. “Automatic duplex printing” applies to output; it does not mean that the scanner is duplex-capable.
Brother currently lists the model at $319.99, reduced from $379.99, but marks it out of stock on its U.S. store. Check retailers before treating it as an available recommendation.
Mac users should also check their workflow. Brother says macOS printing uses AirPrint and that Mac printer drivers are not provided. That may be perfectly adequate, but it is different from installing a conventional manufacturer driver.

3. Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550: best for photo quality
The Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 is the choice for households that would otherwise spend regularly on photo-lab prints or want to produce larger images at home. It supports paper up to 13 × 19 inches, making it a wide-format printer rather than merely a standard office model.
RTINGS places the ET-8500/ET-8550 family at the top of its home-printer recommendations for photo quality, citing detailed photos and sharp documents. The ET-8550 uses a photo-oriented refillable tank system rather than the four-color office setup used by models such as the ET-4950 and Canon G3290.
The major omission is an automatic document feeder. If you regularly scan tax forms, receipts, or multi-page contracts, you will need to place pages individually on the scanner glass. It is also still an inkjet, so leaving it unused for long periods can contribute to printhead clogging. Regular printing is preferable; for a household that prints only a few times per year, a monochrome laser may be cheaper and less troublesome.
Choose the ET-8550 only if its photo and wide-format capabilities justify the premium. For ordinary school and office documents, the ET-4950 or G3290 is a more economical match.

4. Canon MegaTank PIXMA G3290: best budget ink-tank printer
The Canon MegaTank PIXMA G3290 lowers the entry cost of refillable-ink ownership while retaining useful home-office features. It prints, scans, and copies; includes Wi-Fi and USB; has a 2.7-inch LCD; and supports automatic two-sided printing.
Canon lists approximate simplex speeds of 11.0 images per minute in black and 6.0 in color. The printer has a 100-sheet rear tray and a flatbed scanner, but no ADF. That makes it suitable for occasional scanning, not for a home business processing stacks of documents.
Canon’s estimated full-bottle yields are up to 6,000 black-and-white pages and 7,700 color pages in default mode. Photo yield is listed separately at up to 2,200 color pages. These figures are testing estimates; pages with heavy graphics or full-page photos will use ink faster than ordinary text pages.

The G3290 supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, WPA2, and WPA3-SAE. Canon lists a maximum monthly duty cycle of up to 3,000 pages. That is a comparison and durability figure, not a sensible recommended workload for a home user. Do not confuse it with a recommended monthly volume.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the exact model number before buying. Related G3270 and G3570 listings can have different duplex and feature specifications, so their descriptions should not automatically be applied to the G3290.
5. Canon PIXMA MG3620: best inexpensive cartridge printer
The Canon PIXMA MG3620 makes sense when the budget problem is the purchase price rather than long-term operating cost. It prints, scans, and copies, and supports USB, Wi-Fi, AirPrint, Mopria, Canon’s mobile app, and automatic two-sided printing.
RTINGS reports maximum speeds of approximately nine black pages per minute and three color pages per minute. Its scanner produces detailed scans, though testing found them somewhat washed out. The printer’s cartridges yield substantially fewer pages than the tanks in the Epson and Canon MegaTank models.
That distinction matters. A $60-or-so cartridge printer can be the financially sensible choice for someone who prints a few pages every couple of months and wants to avoid tying up several hundred dollars in hardware. It is not the cheapest printer to operate for frequent color printing. Before buying, compare the price and stated yield of a replacement black-and-color cartridge set with your expected annual page count.

The Brother HL-L2460DW is a monochrome, print-only laser printer. It does not scan, copy, or print color. That narrow feature set is also its advantage: if you mainly print essays, forms, shipping labels, and other black-and-white documents, there is no reason to pay for color hardware you will not use.
RTINGS reports first-page-out and print speeds between 32 and 34 pages per minute, depending on the specific family variant. Laser printing avoids the liquid-ink printhead-clogging problem that affects inkjets after long periods of inactivity.

- MOBILE PRINTING MADE EASY: Go mobile with the Brother Mobile Connect app(5) that delivers easy onscreen menu navigation for printing, copying, scanning, and device management from your mobile device. Monitor your ink usage with Page Gauge to help ensure you don’t run out(6).
Laser does not mean maintenance-free. Toner, drums, paper paths, and fusers eventually need replacement or service. But for a household that prints sporadically, a monochrome laser can be more predictable than an inkjet that has to perform cleaning cycles or develop clogged nozzles while sitting unused.
Confirm the exact HL-L2460DW variant and its included features. Family members and subscription bundles may differ. If you need scanning or copying, this is not an all-in-one substitute for the Epson ET-4950 or Canon G3290.
7. Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw: best for a heavier home office
The Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw is a substantial color laser all-in-one for a home office with a consistently heavy workload. It prints, scans, copies, and faxes, and Canon rates it for up to 26 pages per minute with approximately 10.3 seconds to first print.
It includes a 50-sheet duplex ADF, a 250-sheet cassette, a one-sheet manual feed slot, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, USB, and a five-inch color touchscreen. The duplex ADF is particularly useful for scanning or copying two-sided multi-page documents without manually flipping every sheet.
Canon lists a recommended monthly print volume of 150 to 2,500 pages. That is more useful for planning than the maximum duty cycle. The printer also supports direct USB printing for JPG, TIFF, and PDF files and includes business-oriented security features such as IP filtering, IPsec, TLS 1.3, SNMP v3, and IEEE 802.1X.
The trade-offs are physical size and price. Canon lists dimensions of 16.8 × 18.2 × 15.7 inches and a weight of 48.5 pounds. It is a poor choice for a cramped desk or a household that prints only a handful of pages each month. Its document output is sharp and page yields are strong, but a good photo inkjet produces better photos.

| Your pattern | Usually the better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A few black-and-white pages several times per year | Brother HL-L2460DW | Laser avoids liquid-ink clogging during long idle periods. |
| Occasional color printing and the lowest purchase price | Canon PIXMA MG3620 | Cartridge hardware costs less initially, despite higher page costs. |
| Regular mixed home-office printing | Epson ET-4950 or Canon G3290 | Tank ink generally reduces consumable costs at moderate volumes. |
| Frequent color printing with multi-page scanning | Epson ET-4950 or Brother MFC-T780DW | Large ink supplies and an ADF reduce operating and handling costs. |
| Serious photo or 13 × 19-inch printing | Epson ET-8550 | Photo-focused ink system and wide-format support. |
| 150 to 2,500 pages per month with laser-quality documents | Canon MF665Cdw | Fast color laser output and a duplex ADF. |
Estimate your annual pages before deciding. For example, someone printing 20 pages per month may produce only 240 pages per year; paying a large premium for an ink tank may take years to recover. Someone printing 200 pages per month produces 2,400 pages per year, making refillable ink much more compelling. Your calculation should include replacement ink or toner, paper, and any subscription or delivery fees—not just the printer’s advertised price.
Features that are easy to misread
Automatic duplex printing is not duplex scanning
A printer can print on both sides automatically while its scanner still handles one side at a time. The Brother MFC-T780DW is an example: it prints duplex, but its ADF does not scan or copy both sides automatically. The Epson ET-4950 and Canon MF665Cdw support duplex scanning.
An ADF is not a universal document feeder
An ADF is valuable for multi-page paperwork, but it is not designed for every original. Avoid feeding photos, staples, paper clips, labels, sticky notes, bound pages, wrinkled sheets, wet ink, transparencies, or damaged paper into the ET-4950 ADF. Use the flatbed glass instead.

ISO/IEC pages-per-minute figures are intended to make printer speeds more comparable. Draft-mode, maximum, and “up to” figures may describe different conditions. Independent timed tests can also differ from manufacturer ratings, so do not base a purchase solely on the largest number on the box.
Wireless printing still depends on your network
AirPrint, Mopria, and mobile apps require a compatible device and a working wireless connection. A printer with Ethernet can be a better choice for a fixed home-office setup, while Wi-Fi Direct can help connect without a conventional network. Brother says Mobile Connect compatibility varies by device and operating system.
How to choose your printer
- Count your pages. Estimate black, color, photo, and two-sided pages for a typical month.
- Decide whether color is essential. If nearly everything is black text, a monochrome laser may offer better value.
- Price the replacement supplies. Look at cartridge or toner prices and stated yields before focusing on the printer discount.
- Check scanning requirements. Choose an ADF for multi-page work and a duplex ADF if you routinely scan both sides.
- Measure the space. Laser all-in-ones can be deep and heavy; confirm room for paper trays and access panels.
- Check your devices. Verify Windows, macOS, iPhone, Android, AirPrint, Mopria, and app support for the exact model.
- Check stock and price immediately before ordering. Promotional prices and availability, particularly for the Brother MFC-T780DW, can change.
FAQ
What is the best home printer in 2026?
The Epson EcoTank ET-4950 is the best general recommendation for most home offices because it combines low-cost tank ink, print/scan/copy/fax functions, a 250-sheet tray, automatic duplex printing, automatic duplex scanning, and an ADF. It is not the best choice for everyone: occasional black-and-white users may be better served by a monochrome laser, while serious photo users should consider the Epson ET-8550.
Are ink-tank printers cheaper than cartridge printers?
Usually at moderate or high print volumes, because replacement ink costs less per page. They are not automatically cheaper for every household. If you print only a few pages per year, a low-priced cartridge printer such as the Canon PIXMA MG3620 may cost less overall because you avoid the larger upfront purchase.
Is a laser printer better for occasional use?
Often, especially if you print mostly black-and-white documents. Laser printers avoid the liquid-ink printhead clogging that can occur when an inkjet sits unused for long periods. The Brother HL-L2460DW is a suitable print-only example, but it cannot scan, copy, or print in color.
What is the difference between duplex printing and duplex scanning?
Duplex printing means the printer can put content on both sides of a sheet automatically. Duplex scanning means the scanner can capture both sides of an original automatically. These are separate features: the Brother MFC-T780DW has duplex printing but not a duplex-capable ADF, while the Epson ET-4950 and Canon MF665Cdw support duplex scanning.
The Bottom Line
Buy the Epson EcoTank ET-4950 if you want one printer for regular home-office printing, scanning, copying, and low-cost color output. Choose the Brother MFC-T780DW if its unusually high stated ink yields suit your workload and you can find it in stock, but remember that its ADF is single-sided. The Canon G3290 is a more basic tank option, while the Canon MG3620 keeps the initial cost down for infrequent users. For mostly black text and long idle periods, choose the Brother HL-L2460DW; for high-volume color documents, step up to the Canon MF665Cdw; and for serious large-format photos, choose the Epson ET-8550.
Whichever model you buy, compare the complete ownership cost: printer price, replacement supplies, paper, expected page count, and the value of features such as an ADF or automatic duplex scanning.
