A Peek Inside Harry Winston’s Jewelry Collection: What We Know

Harry Winston’s jewels span an estate acquisition, a traveling exhibition, a landmark Smithsonian donation and a separately maintained House collection—not one complete public inventory.

Harry Winston’s “massive jewelry collection” was not one fully catalogued trove. The record includes jewels he acquired and exhibited, gems he donated to museums, and a separate collection of vintage Harry Winston pieces that the House says it maintains. Those categories overlap in the story of the brand, but they are not the same inventory.

What jewels were in Harry Winston’s collection?

Winston established his New York jewelry company in 1932. A major chapter began after the death of heiress Evalyn Walsh McLean: Winston bought her jewelry collection in 1949. The Smithsonian identifies the Hope Diamond and the 94.8-carat Star of the East among the jewels in that acquisition. It also lists the 15-carat Star of the South, a 9-carat green diamond, and a 31-carat diamond now known as the McLean diamond. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History: Hope Diamond history

These named stones give a view into a celebrated acquisition, not a complete count of everything Winston owned over his career. Nor does the fact that a jewel passed through his hands establish where it is today.

How the Court of Jewels brought gems to the public

From 1949 through 1953, Winston took selected gems on the Court of Jewels, a traveling exhibition that toured the United States. It included the Hope Diamond, Star of the East, and Portuguese Diamond. The show paired displays with education about gems and fundraising for civic and charitable organizations. It was a public exhibition of important stones, not a complete inventory of Winston’s holdings. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History: Hope Diamond history

Winston described his public-facing aim in a statement attributed to him by the Smithsonian: “I want the public to know more about precious gems.” The point was not only spectacle; the traveling show presented gem knowledge alongside the jewels themselves.

The Hope Diamond’s path to the Smithsonian

In 1958, Winston donated the Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian Institution. The museum describes the gift as a catalyst for its National Gem Collection, and the Hope became one of the central attractions of the National Museum of Natural History. The donation applies to the Hope Diamond, not to every gem Winston acquired or exhibited. The 94.8-carat Star of the East, for example, is named as part of the McLean collection bought by Winston, but the cited Smithsonian history does not say it came to the museum with the Hope. Two stones, two different outcomes

Jewel What the record establishes What it does not establish
Star of the East The Smithsonian describes this 94.8-carat stone as part of the McLean collection Winston acquired in 1949. It was also shown on the Court of Jewels. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History: Hope Diamond history The cited history does not establish that it was donated with the Hope Diamond or state its current owner.
Star of Independence The Smithsonian Archives says Winston purchased the 76-carat diamond, cut from a 204.10-carat rough stone, and publicly displayed it. It was later sold to an unidentified buyer. Smithsonian Institution Archives: Star of Independence The buyer’s identity and the stone’s current ownership are not stated.

The contrast is useful: acquired, exhibited, donated, and currently held are separate claims. The Star of Independence was acquired and displayed, but its later sale means it should not be treated as part of a present-day Winston or Smithsonian collection on the basis of this record.

What the House says it preserves today

The House of Harry Winston says it maintains “an exceptional museum collection of vintage Harry Winston jewels.” That confirms a preserved House collection, but the archive page does not publish a complete catalogue or establish that this collection is identical to Winston’s historical holdings or the Court of Jewels. Harry Winston: Archives

A recent Smithsonian example of the House’s continuing archive is a reproduction of a 1955 Harry Winston brooch worn by First Lady Melania Trump at the January 2025 inaugural balls. The Smithsonian identifies the displayed piece as a reproduction made with cubic zirconia and platinum, not the original archival brooch.
