Andrew Baglino, Tesla’s former Senior Vice President of Powertrain and Energy Engineering, resigned effective April 14, 2024. Reuters reported two days later that he had sold about 1.1 million Tesla shares for approximately $181.5 million, with the sale dated approximately April 25. The resignation is documented in Tesla’s filing; the later sale details are Reuters’ account of an SEC filing.
Who left Tesla, and when?
Baglino joined Tesla in March 2006 and held engineering roles continuously from then on, according to the company’s April 2024 Form 8-K. He became Senior Vice President of Powertrain and Energy Engineering in October 2019. Tesla said his resignation became effective April 14, 2024.
In the filing, Tesla described his career as 18 years and said: “Tesla is grateful to Mr. Baglino for his leadership and contributions to our significant innovation and growth over the course of his 18-year career.” That is Tesla’s statement, not a personal comment from Baglino.
What was the stock sale?
Reuters reported on April 26, 2024, that Baglino sold about 1.1 million Tesla shares for approximately $181.5 million through a stock-option exercise. Reuters listed April 25 as the approximate sale date. The share count, value and date are reported approximations, not exact figures established by the separate Form 4 linked below.

The distinction matters: the SEC Form 4 filed April 3, 2024 covers an earlier transaction on April 1, involving 10,500 shares. It says that earlier exercise and sale were made under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan adopted November 13, 2023. That filing does not document the later sale Reuters reported, and its trading-plan detail should not be assumed to apply to it.

How does the sale fit with Tesla’s restructuring?
Tesla announced a company-wide restructuring on April 15, 2024, one day after Baglino’s resignation took effect. The company said it planned to reduce global headcount by more than 10%, citing cost reductions and increased productivity, and described the move as preparation for its “next phase of growth.” Those details appear in Tesla’s Form 8-K.
The timing does not establish that the restructuring caused Baglino to resign. Tesla’s filing gives the effective date and his role but does not state his reason for leaving. Likewise, the reported stock sale alone does not establish that he lacked confidence in Tesla or acted on adverse information.
