Chase’s offer page lists a $250 bonus, a $0 annual fee, and a 0% introductory APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers. But the card’s headline 5% cash back applies only to activated quarterly categories, subject to a $1,500 combined-purchase cap each quarter; many other purchases earn 1%. Terms and offers can vary by application route, so check the exact terms shown before applying. Chase Freedom Flex offer details.
What the current offer requires
Chase advertises a $250 bonus after at least $500 in qualifying purchases during the first three months from account opening. That is a $500 spending threshold—not a requirement to carry a balance. Chase says the bonus may take 6–8 weeks to post after you qualify, and the account must remain open and not be in default when the bonus is fulfilled. Chase’s offer page.

Some transactions do not count toward the threshold. Chase excludes balance transfers, cash advances, cash-like transactions, certain gambling transactions, person-to-person transfers, account-funding transactions, interest, fees, and unauthorized or fraudulent charges. Plan to meet the minimum with purchases you would make anyway.
Check eligibility before applying
The displayed offer excludes current Freedom Flex cardmembers and people who received a new-cardmember bonus on this card within the past 24 months. Chase says offers can vary depending on where you apply and can change over time. Confirm the bonus, eligibility language, APR, and fees on the application route you intend to use; do not assume every applicant sees identical terms.

How the card earns cash back
| Purchase type | Cash back | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Activated quarterly categories | 5% | Up to $1,500 in combined category purchases per quarter; activation required. After the cap, those purchases earn 1%. |
| Travel booked through Chase Travel | 5% | Applies to travel purchased through Chase Travel. |
| Dining | 3% | Includes takeout and eligible delivery services. |
| Drugstores | 3% | Applies to eligible drugstore purchases. |
| All other purchases | 1% | Standard rate outside the listed bonus categories. |
Chase lists grocery stores (excluding Walmart and Target), dining, and American Red Cross as the categories for October–December 2026. Activation for that quarter began September 15, 2026. The 5% rate is therefore not a universal return: category purchases require activation and share the quarterly cap. See Chase’s current category and rewards terms.
To judge the rewards in practice, compare the categories with your usual spending, estimate how much of that spending falls within the cap, and account for the 1% rate on other purchases. The card may suit someone who is willing to activate categories and can use them without changing spending habits. A flat-rate card may be simpler for someone who does not want to track quarterly categories; that is a convenience trade-off, not a claim that one card is universally more valuable.

After the introductory period, the offer page lists a variable APR of 18.49%–27.99%; your actual rate and other pricing depend on the terms presented with your application. Protections Chase describes
Chase’s benefits page describes several protections, each subject to eligibility rules and the controlling benefits terms:
- Purchase protection: Eligible new purchases are described as covered against damage or theft for 120 days, up to $500 per item.
- Extended warranty protection: Eligible U.S. manufacturer warranties of three years or less may receive an extra year of coverage, up to four years from purchase.
- Trip cancellation/interruption insurance: For eligible prepaid, nonrefundable passenger fares, the page describes reimbursement of up to $1,500 per covered traveler and $6,000 per trip.
These limits do not mean every damaged item, warranty claim, or canceled trip qualifies. Check the definitions, exclusions, documentation requirements, and claim rules in the applicable benefits guide. Chase Freedom Flex benefits.
Who should consider applying?
- Consider it if you meet the offer’s eligibility rules, can reach $500 in qualifying purchases without buying extra, value a no-annual-fee card, and expect to pay your statement balance in full.
- Look more carefully at the rewards if you are unlikely to activate categories or your normal purchases do not match them. Much of your non-bonus spending earns 1%.
- Be cautious if the spending threshold would stretch your budget or you expect to carry a balance after the introductory APR ends.
The strongest reason to apply is a good fit between the offer and spending you already planned—not the bonus by itself. Before submitting an application, verify the live offer, your eligibility, and your personal APR and fee disclosures.
