He describes human-rights groups experimenting with private and local AI alongside Bitcoin’s potential for moving money outside a single institution’s control. These are possibilities and reported initiatives—not proof that either technology guarantees freedom or improves human-rights outcomes.
What Gladstein means by Bitcoin-AI convergence
Gladstein, the Human Rights Foundation’s chief strategy officer, writes and speaks about how open monetary and communication networks may help people resist censorship and financial repression. His convergence thesis extends that concern to computing: control over money, information tools and the infrastructure that processes information can affect whether activists can work without relying entirely on institutions or providers that might restrict access.

In his September 2026 reflections on AI, Gladstein argues that open-source software used to operate AI systems—what he calls the harness—and increasingly capable open-weight models could give users more choice over how their AI works. He calls the desired direction “freedom AI”: personal agents, private inference and local operation that reduce reliance on a single service provider. The point is not simply to make activists more productive; it is to give them more control over sensitive information and the tools they depend on.
That framing is consistent with his monetary argument. On his official homepage, Gladstein writes, “The biggest privilege in the world is stable money.” In a 2021 CoinDesk interview, he connects Bitcoin with free speech and property rights, and says HRF’s work includes educating newcomers about scams and confusion between Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Those are Gladstein’s advocacy positions, not neutral findings about every user’s experience.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
How Bitcoin could help—and what it does not solve
Bitcoin is a permissionless monetary network: a person may be able to receive or send funds without an account at a bank deciding whether to approve the transaction. Gladstein argues that this can matter when a government or institution freezes accounts, restricts transfers or excludes people from conventional banking. In his 2021 CoinDesk interview, he cited Nigeria’s Feminist Coalition turning to Bitcoin after its bank accounts were frozen, and said Belarusian opposition groups and Russian journalists were using it to receive support. These were examples he gave in that interview, not evidence of current practice across those groups.
In a 2019 TIME essay, Gladstein described Venezuelans receiving Bitcoin from relatives and using phone wallets, flash drives or memorized recovery phrases to maintain control of funds. He also discussed people in refugee camps receiving Bitcoin with internet access. Those examples illustrate possible access routes, not a guarantee that funds are safe or usable in every circumstance. A recovery phrase can preserve access if a device is lost, but losing or exposing it can also put funds at risk.

Bitcoin’s censorship resistance should not be mistaken for anonymity. Transactions are recorded on a public ledger; a wallet does not inherently conceal a person’s identity or transaction history. Gladstein’s TIME essay acknowledged that, at the time, Bitcoin lacked cutting-edge usability, speed and privacy. Practical access also depends on internet connectivity, software, custody choices and local conditions. It may be unsuitable or too risky for some people.
The essay quoted cryptocurrency researcher Alejandro Machado saying a US-to-bolivar wire transfer could face a fee as high as 56% and take several weeks. That is a historical figure reported in the 2019 essay; the passage provides no study date or method, and it should not be read as a current transfer fee or typical result.

What AI projects Gladstein describes
Gladstein’s September 2026 account describes HRF supporting several ways for human-rights defenders to explore AI. The projects range from education and collaborative development to experiments in where AI processing happens and who can see the data.
Agent Camps and hackathons
He describes HRF Agent Camps as three-day, in-person programs where activists work with instructors on education, AI software and hardware design, and software engineering. At AI Hack for Freedom events, activists collaborate with developers. Gladstein reports that participants moved within a few months from specifying what they needed developers to build toward leading work themselves. That is his observation; the account does not provide independent evaluation or impact statistics.

Private and local AI
Gladstein says HRF has worked with Finite on a private mode in which the inference provider cannot read user data. He also says a local mode running on an HRF-controlled cluster is being tested. He describes an uncensored local model running on roughly $4,500 of equipment and serving a dozen people. That is his example, not an independent benchmark, a current hardware price estimate or a guarantee of comparable capacity elsewhere.
The AI Lounge and planned work
At the Oslo Freedom Forum, Gladstein says attendees could try personal agents in an AI Lounge using a customized version of Hermes, with frontier, private and local options. He describes putting the harness server in a trusted execution environment and finalizing a fully encrypted mobile app without third parties or KYC as next steps. Those are goals in his account, not confirmation that the features are complete or generally available.

How the approaches differ
The options Gladstein describes involve different trade-offs in who controls the software and compute, where information is processed, and how mature the setup is. His account does not provide a controlled comparison, so the table distinguishes what he reports rather than ranking the options.
| Approach | What Gladstein reports | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Frontier AI | Available as an option for attendees to try at the AI Lounge. | The account does not specify the provider, data-handling terms or access requirements. |
| Private mode | HRF worked with Finite on a mode where the inference provider cannot read user data. | The account does not establish a full technical evaluation, deployment scope or independent verification. |
| Local mode | A mode on an HRF-controlled cluster is being tested; Gladstein also reports a local model serving a dozen people on roughly $4,500 of equipment. | The account does not give independent performance results or establish that the example generalizes to other workloads. |
| Planned trusted setup | Gladstein names a harness server in a trusted execution environment and a fully encrypted mobile app without third parties or KYC as next steps. | These are planned goals, not completed features confirmed in the account. |
Private inference and local operation are not interchangeable claims. A service can assert that its provider cannot read user data without running the model on the user’s own device; local operation changes where computation occurs but still depends on the software, hardware and people controlling that environment. For anyone handling sensitive material, the relevant questions include who can access prompts, where processing takes place, and what identity or permission requirements apply. Gladstein’s description does not answer every implementation question.
What the convergence could mean for defenders
Together, the two technologies point to different forms of access. Bitcoin may offer a way to receive or hold value without depending exclusively on a conventional financial account. AI tools that are private or locally operated may offer ways to work with information without sending it to a provider that can read it. In Gladstein’s view, combining more user-controlled money and computing could reduce some institutional chokepoints for activists.

Bitcoin use still requires workable access to devices, software and the network, while self-custody creates responsibility for protecting keys and recovery phrases. AI still depends on hardware, software and a trustworthy setup; local operation does not by itself establish that a system is secure or appropriate for sensitive work. These constraints make the practical question less “Does the technology create freedom?” and more “Which specific dependency does this setup reduce, and what new risks does it introduce?”
What is established—and what is not
Gladstein’s accounts describe an argument, historical examples and ongoing experiments. The reviewed sources do not establish an independent comparative study showing that these Bitcoin and AI initiatives improve human-rights outcomes. They also do not supply a success rate, beneficiary count or controlled performance comparison. The strongest supported conclusion is narrower: Gladstein and HRF are pursuing open, private and local tools as ways to give defenders more agency, while important questions about privacy, usability, security and impact remain dependent on the specific implementation and circumstances.
