Wix is the best all-purpose starting point for many small businesses, but the right builder depends on what the website needs to do. Choose Shopify when selling products is the core business, Squarespace for a design-led brand, WordPress.org for control and extensibility, Hostinger for a low-cost simple site, GoDaddy for quick setup, or Webflow for detailed visual control.
This is a comparison of platform capabilities and published pricing, not a firsthand test: no shared test sites or performance measurements are available here. Prices and features can vary by country and change, so check the linked provider page before buying.
Choose a builder by what your business needs to do
| If you mainly need… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A flexible general-purpose business site | Wix | Combines site editing with a broad set of business features, including bookings, marketing, and ecommerce. |
| A polished portfolio or brand-led service site | Squarespace | Its curated templates and visual consistency suit businesses where presentation matters. |
| An online store with room to grow | Shopify | Its platform is centered on products, checkout, inventory, shipping, and sales integrations. |
| Content, customization, and control | WordPress.org | Its open ecosystem supports extensive customization, but hosting and maintenance are your responsibility. |
| A simple site at a low initial price | Hostinger Website Builder | Hosting and site tools are bundled; the advertised entry price requires a long initial term and renews at a higher listed rate. |
| A quick setup tied to a domain account | GoDaddy Website Builder | It brings website and related business tools into one vendor account. |
| Detailed layout and CMS control | Webflow | It offers more granular visual control, with a steeper learning curve than beginner-oriented builders. |
For a local service business, prioritize clear service pages, click-to-call contact details, hours, location or service area, quote forms, and booking if needed. A product business should assess catalog size, variants, inventory, shipping, taxes, and sales channels before comparing design tools. A portfolio usually needs fewer operational features but benefits from strong presentation; a content-led business should weigh publishing tools, SEO controls, and export options.
What a website builder includes—and what to check
Hosted builders such as Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, Hostinger, GoDaddy, and Webflow generally combine an editor, hosting, templates, security features such as SSL, domain connection, and tools for functions such as forms, analytics, marketing, booking, or commerce. The exact bundle depends on provider and plan.

WordPress.org is different: it is software, not one all-in-one hosted subscription. You choose hosting and a domain, then manage or arrange themes, plugins, backups, security, updates, and maintenance. Do not confuse it with WordPress.com, a hosted service with its own plans and terms. See WordPress.org and WordPress.com.
Before committing, make sure the plan you are considering supports the essentials for your business:
- A custom domain, mobile-responsive pages, HTTPS, and contact forms.
- Click-to-call and email links, business hours, location or service-area information, and any booking or quote workflow you need.
- Search-result title and description controls, a sitemap, redirects, and a blog or resource section if you plan to publish content.
- Analytics, newsletter and social links, and integrations with the tools your business already uses.
- Accessibility-conscious design, privacy and legal pages, and a practical backup or recovery process.
- An export or migration path for the content and data that matter to you.
A booking button does not necessarily mean a complete scheduling system is included. Check whether staff calendars, reminders, payments, cancellation rules, and integrations require a separate product, paid plan, or third-party service.
1. Wix: best all-purpose choice for many small businesses
Best for: Service businesses and owners who want a flexible hosted site with a broad range of business tools.
Wix combines an AI-assisted site-creation option with a drag-and-drop editor and a large template library. Its business tools cover areas such as bookings, payments, ecommerce, blogging, lead management, events, and marketing. That breadth makes it a practical place to start if you need a site that may later add appointments or a small store. Review its business website features, plans, and website builder before choosing a plan.
Wix advertises a free domain for one year with select annual Premium plans; confirm eligibility and renewal terms on its plans page. Domain and ecommerce availability, as well as payment options, can vary by country. Its flexibility can also make it easier to produce inconsistent layouts without a clear design system. Moving a site away from Wix is not the same as exporting a portable, self-hosted website. Its SEO controls can help you configure a site, but they do not guarantee search rankings.

2. Squarespace: best for design-led businesses
Best for: Consultants, creatives, restaurants, portfolios, and small brands that want a polished presentation without highly granular design work.
Squarespace’s curated templates and visual consistency are a good fit when brand appearance is central. The platform supports blogging, ecommerce, scheduling, marketing, and SEO features. Its more guided approach can be easier to keep coherent than a highly free-form editor, but it offers less flexibility for unusual functionality than Wix or WordPress.

The available official product information does not establish current U.S. plan prices or all associated fees, so check Squarespace’s current offer for plan names, billing terms, scheduling availability, and commerce costs before subscribing.
3. Shopify: best for ecommerce-first businesses
Best for: Retailers and product businesses whose website must run a store, especially as catalogs and sales operations become more involved.
Shopify is built around store operations: product management, checkout, payments, shipping, inventory, analytics, and sales integrations. Its official builder page also describes hosting, SSL, responsive storefronts, SEO controls, blogging, and an app ecosystem. See Shopify’s website builder information.
For a business selling a few products alongside services, a general-purpose builder may be sufficient. Shopify can be excessive for a simple brochure site, and the subscription is only part of the potential cost: apps, themes, payment processing, shipping tools, and other services may add to it. Payment and transaction fees depend on payment setup and country. Compare Shopify with the commerce features of Wix, Squarespace, or WooCommerce rather than assuming a store-first platform is automatically the least expensive.
Rank #3
4. WordPress.org: best for control and extensibility
Best for: Businesses investing in publishing, resource libraries, memberships, directories, custom integrations, or a highly tailored site.
WordPress.org’s open-source software and broad theme and plugin ecosystem allow extensive customization, including ecommerce through WooCommerce and other plugins. You have more control over hosting, code, data, backups, and migration than with a closed hosted builder—but that control comes with work. Hosting, domain registration, themes, plugins, updates, security, backups, and troubleshooting must be managed by you or a provider.
Plugin conflicts, outdated software, weak hosting, and insecure configuration are practical risks. Costs depend on the hosting and tools you select, so there is no single meaningful WordPress.org subscription price to compare with an all-in-one builder. It can suit a business that values ownership and has technical help available; it is rarely the simplest set-and-forget option for a nontechnical owner.
5. Hostinger Website Builder: best for a budget-conscious simple site
Best for: New or budget-constrained businesses that want a straightforward site with hosting bundled.
Hostinger packages templates, hosting, AI creation tools, and other site features together. Its booking product describes appointment management, Google Calendar integration, SEO tools, and zero transaction fees for the booking and ecommerce setup it describes; confirm which capabilities are included in your chosen plan at Hostinger’s booking builder page.
On the listed offer, Hostinger advertises its Premium Website Builder for $2.99 per month for a 48-month term and lists $10.99 per month at renewal. This is a promotional term price, not a month-to-month rate; verify the current offer and terms on Hostinger’s pricing page. The builder may be less suited to sophisticated ecommerce, advanced content structures, or custom workflows, so verify plan limits before committing.
Rank #4
6. GoDaddy Website Builder: best for quick setup
Best for: Beginners, especially those already managing a domain through GoDaddy, who need a basic service-business site and a consolidated account.
GoDaddy describes a free-start option that does not require a credit card, along with templates, mobile editing, analytics, marketing tools, reviews, appointment booking, and ecommerce features. Its Online Store can support sales through marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, and Walmart, subject to plan and market availability. Consult the GoDaddy Website Builder features page for what is currently offered.
GoDaddy’s integrated dashboard may speed setup, but design and customization depth may be less appealing than Wix, Squarespace, or Webflow. Check local plan availability, introductory and renewal prices, domain renewal, email costs, and whether the booking or marketplace features you need are included. Convenience within one vendor account can also make a later move to specialist tools more involved.
7. Webflow: best for granular visual control
Best for: Designers, agencies, startups, and businesses that need precise layouts or structured CMS content.
Webflow gives users more visual control than beginner-first builders and supports CMS capabilities on higher site plans. That flexibility is useful for a custom marketing site or a carefully structured content collection, but the learning curve is steeper, and owners take on more responsibility for design systems and content modeling. It is not the natural first choice for an appointment-heavy local business or a store-first operation.
Webflow’s pricing page lists a free Starter plan, Basic at $15 per month billed yearly, and Premium at $25 per month billed yearly. The listed prices are per site, with applicable taxes added at checkout; workspace and collaboration plans can change total cost. Confirm current plan limits at Webflow pricing.

How to compare the real cost
Do not compare a promotional price for a long billing term with a recurring monthly subscription, or a basic brochure plan with an ecommerce plan. Work out both the first-term payment and the ongoing cost using the plan that actually supports your needs.
- Billing term and renewal: Record the upfront commitment, promotional period, renewal price, and whether monthly billing is available.
- Domain and email: Check how long a domain offer lasts, its renewal cost, and whether professional email is included or separate.
- Required features: Identify the least expensive plan that supports your custom domain, ecommerce, bookings, analytics, or integrations—not just the lowest advertised tier.
- Added tools: Include paid apps, plugins, themes, booking services, shipping tools, backups, security, and maintenance where relevant.
- Payments: Separate the platform’s transaction fee, if any, from payment-processor charges. Both can depend on plan, payment method, and country.
- Exit costs: Consider whether you can export pages, posts, products, images, customer or order data, and preserve URLs and redirects if you migrate.
For a self-hosted WordPress.org site, include hosting, domain, any paid theme or plugins, security and backup services, and the cost of technical help. A hosted builder may be easier to budget, but its subscription does not automatically cover every business tool. Taxes, plan names, features, and fees can change and vary by location.
What to weigh when choosing
A useful comparison starts with the work the site must perform, rather than an unexplained universal score. Ease of editing, core business features, commerce, design, SEO and publishing controls, total cost, support, and portability are all relevant; their importance depends on the business. For a store, give inventory and checkout more weight. For a local service business, prioritize contact and booking workflows. For a content publisher, focus on CMS capabilities and migration options.
SEO tools are configuration tools, not ranking guarantees. Metadata, mobile layouts, sitemaps, and redirects are useful, but visibility also depends on content quality, search intent, local relevance, links and mentions, technical performance, competition, reputation, and the quality of your Google Business Profile. Likewise, a provider-managed SSL certificate does not remove your responsibility for account passwords, privacy, payment settings, or plugin security where applicable.

When a builder may not be the right answer
A hosted builder is often a sensible choice when you want to publish and maintain a conventional business website without managing hosting. Consider an alternative when the site is central to a more specialized operation:
- Self-hosted WordPress or WooCommerce: Consider these when you need extensive content control, custom integrations, or a flexible store and have maintenance support.
- A specialist booking or directory product: Consider it when scheduling, staff, listings, or marketplace workflows are more important than the marketing site itself.
- A professional designer or agency: Consider hiring help when the site needs a distinctive design, complex integrations, migration, or ongoing technical ownership that you do not want to handle.
- A one-page tool: For a temporary launch or simple landing page, a full business platform may offer more than you need; check that the lighter tool supports the domain, forms, and future growth you expect.
- An ecommerce-first platform: If inventory, multiple sales channels, subscriptions, wholesale, or shipping rules are core operations, compare platforms on those workflows rather than on brochure-site editing alone.
Before signing up, ask what happens if you leave: whether the domain can be moved independently, which content and customer data can be exported, whether URLs and redirects can be preserved, and whether the design itself is portable. A quick launch can still lead to a costly rebuild if the platform cannot support the business’s next stage.
Final verdict
Start with Wix for a broad set of small-business website needs, Shopify for a business centered on selling products, Squarespace for visual presentation, WordPress.org for control, Hostinger for a simple budget site, GoDaddy for a quick integrated setup, or Webflow for advanced visual control. Choose the plan by the work the site must do and its full ongoing cost—not by the lowest promotional number alone.
