Texas Dow Employees Credit Union (TDECU) said a third-party file-transfer vendor, MOVEit, was compromised in 2023, potentially exposing members’ personal information. Maine’s 2024 breach filing reports 500,474 people affected. If you received a TDECU notice, check its recipient-specific details and take steps to protect your identity and accounts; the 12-month Experian offer described in the filing is historical, and current enrollment availability is not established.
What happened in the TDECU data breach?
TDECU’s notice says a bad actor compromised MOVEit, a third-party vendor TDECU used to transfer data. Files containing members’ personal information may have been removed from MOVEit between May 29 and May 31, 2023. TDECU says it discovered the incident on July 30, 2024, and that its broader network was not compromised. Maine’s Attorney General filing reports 500,474 people affected, including 54 Maine residents, and says written notifications were dated August 23, 2024. California’s breach listing also records the 2023 incident dates and an August 23, 2024 report date.
Was my information exposed in the TDECU data breach?
The state-filed sample notice is redacted where it would identify the personal information involved for an individual recipient. A contemporaneous SecurityWeek report summarizing TDECU’s notice lists names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, credit-card numbers, driver’s-license numbers, other identification numbers, and taxpayer identification numbers as potentially affected categories.
That list does not mean every affected person had every type of information exposed. Read your own letter for the data categories associated with you, or contact TDECU through the contact details in the notice or its official channels if the letter is unclear.

TDECU’s sample notice stated: “We have no evidence that any of your information has been used for identity theft or to commit financial fraud.” That describes what TDECU said it knew when it issued the notice; it is not a guarantee against future misuse.
What should I do after a TDECU data breach letter?
1. Read the notice and identify the exposed data
Make a note of the specific information the letter says may have been involved. Your response should reflect those details: a possible Social Security number exposure calls for particular attention to credit reports and new accounts, while a potentially affected account number calls for close monitoring of that account.

- SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
2. Check your credit and consider a freeze or fraud alert
The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance for data breaches recommends checking free credit reports and looking for unfamiliar accounts if your Social Security number was exposed. It also advises consumers to use free services offered in a breach notice and consider a credit freeze or fraud alert.
A freeze restricts access to your credit file, which can make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name. It may also delay or interfere with your own applications, so plan to lift it temporarily when applying. A fraud alert is less restrictive: it asks creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity. Texas Department of Insurance guidance says both are free. It describes initial fraud alerts lasting one year and extended alerts lasting seven years for identity-theft victims. You can place a security freeze with each nationwide credit bureau; U.S. law does not allow a charge to place or remove one.

Is the TDECU Experian offer still available?
Maine’s filing says affected people were offered 12 months of complimentary Experian IdentityWorks, with access to an Experian Identity Restoration agent to investigate and resolve incidents of fraud from the incident date. The filings record notifications in August 2024, but they do not establish whether enrollment is still open. Check the deadline and instructions in your own notice, or verify eligibility with TDECU using its official contact information. Do not assume the historic offer can still be activated.
