A price may be too low when it fails to cover your full costs and intended profit, sits below comparable offers without a clear reason, overlooks customer-valued benefits, has not kept pace with changed costs or demand, or relies on discounts that do not meet their goal. These are prompts to investigate, not proof that raising your price is the right move. A deliberately low introductory offer or loss leader can make sense if it is intentional, sustainable, and producing the result you want.
1. Your price does not cover full costs and intended profit
Start with the economics of delivering the product or service, not just the most visible expense. Include materials, labor, overhead, and applicable taxes. For service work, calculate costs against the realistic time available for paid work—not every hour in the week.
Then compare the resulting cost with your price and the profit you intend to earn. If sales leave too little to meet that target, investigate before assuming volume will make up the difference. A low price can be a deliberate, time-limited choice, but its goal and economics should be explicit. Australian Government pricing guidance and Business Queensland guidance both emphasize accounting for costs when setting prices.
2. Comparable offers cost more, with no clear reason for the gap
Look at businesses serving the same customer segment and compare the complete offer: total price, features or deliverables, quality, service, customer benefit, and—where relevant—timing, supply, and discount terms. A competitor’s price is a reference point, not a target to copy. As the Australian Government puts it, “Use your competitor’s prices as a guide, but don’t copy them exactly.”

A lower price may be justified by a simpler offer, lower costs, or a deliberate strategy. If those differences do not explain the gap, treat it as a reason to review your positioning and customer value. The U.S. Small Business Administration’s market research guidance also recommends examining competitors and their offerings.
3. The price may not reflect benefits customers value
Customers may value benefits beyond the item itself: a distinctive feature, dependable service, convenience, or time saved. Find out which benefits matter to your target customers, what alternatives they consider, and what they spend on similar products or services. Compliments alone do not establish willingness to pay.

Ask customers direct questions, then test price options with a sample of customers or through a controlled offer. Observe buying behavior rather than treating stated enthusiasm as a guarantee. The official guidance does not prescribe a universal sample size or promise that a particular test will succeed.
4. Costs, demand, or market conditions have changed
A price that once worked may no longer fit if input costs rise, customer demand shifts, substitutes become more attractive, or seasonal and supply conditions change. Review prices at least annually and when costs or market conditions change. Include relevant fees and taxes in your assessment, and consider how sensitive demand is to a price change.

Use current conditions rather than assuming last year’s calculations still apply. The appropriate response depends on your customers, alternatives, and operating costs—not simply on whether one expense has increased.
5. Low prices or discounts are not meeting their stated goal
Before judging a low price, name what it is supposed to accomplish. Penetration pricing can be a short-term way to attract customers or gain market share. A loss leader relies on stronger sales elsewhere to support the offer. Discounts can also reduce profit without delivering the intended sales, customer acquisition, or market-share result.

Compare the offer’s actual results with its goal and with your financial requirements. If it is not attracting the intended customers or supporting other sales as planned, reconsider its price, duration, or structure. If it is working and remains sustainable, a low price may be strategic rather than a mistake.
How to correct a price that is too low
- Choose the goal. Decide whether this price is meant to prioritize profit, market share, demand, or brand position. This makes it easier to distinguish an intentional offer from a price that has drifted below a sustainable level.
- Calculate a cost floor. Add direct and overhead costs, then account for the profit target. For hourly services, use realistic paid-work availability when working out the rate. A cost floor helps check whether the price covers the business; it does not prove customers will accept it.
- Benchmark the complete offer. Compare direct and indirect competitors serving the same segment on price, features, quality, service, and customer benefit. Do not adopt a competitor’s price without understanding what is included and how the offer differs.
- Research value and test options. Ask customers what matters to them, which alternatives they buy, and what they spend on similar offers. Test different price options and observe purchases. There is no universal test size or guaranteed result.
- Select an approach that fits. Options described in government guidance include cost-plus, hourly, going-rate or competitive, value, premium, penetration, skimming, loss-leader, and dynamic pricing. Their suitability depends on your goals, costs, customers, demand, and ability to deliver.
- Review and measure. Check prices at least annually and when costs or market conditions change. Track the outcome the price was intended to serve—such as profit, sales, demand, or market share—and adjust if results do not support the goal.
What this diagnosis can—and cannot—tell you
These five checks are practical prompts based on government pricing guidance, not a validated universal checklist or a published study. High acceptance rates or customers saying yes quickly may prompt a closer look, but they are not reliable standalone proof that a price is too low. No general statistic establishes how often businesses are underpriced, and there is no responsible way to predict the profit or conversion impact of a change without your costs, market, and customer data.
