Mules are backless shoes, but the category ranges from flat ballet styles and loafers to clogs, sandals, and heels. The best choice depends on where you plan to wear them and what matters most: coverage, support, adjustability, material, or price. This guide brings together picks and categories featured by Phia, ELLE, and Glamour; it is not a claim that 54 pairs were independently tested or selected by one expert panel.
What are the best mules for women?
Start with the use case, then compare the shoe’s construction. A loafer mule or flat can create a polished office look; a clog or mule with a supportive footbed may suit casual errands; and a heeled or embellished design can work for an occasion outfit. These are styling suggestions, not guarantees of comfort or all-day wearability.
The editorial roundups cover a wide range of silhouettes rather than a single uniform type of shoe:
- For work: Consider a loafer mule or clean-lined flat. ELLE includes Gucci’s Gigi loafer and Madewell’s Greta Ballet Flat Mule; Glamour also features work-oriented styles. Check dress codes and the shoe’s security on your foot.
- For casual wear: Clogs and flat mules are options to compare. Glamour’s examples include Birkenstock Boston Soft Footbed Clogs, Vionic Willa Mules, Dansko Talulah Mules, and Crocs Dylan Clogs.
- For warm weather: Woven, caged, fisherman, and sandal styles leave more of the foot exposed. ELLE includes Vince Barcelona Jelly Cage Mule and STAUD Brigitte Mule Sandals; Glamour includes fisherman and mesh designs.
- For events or dressier outfits: Compare kitten-heel or other heeled mules, along with embellished designs. ELLE’s examples include Dolce Vita Kairi Mid Heels and Tory Burch Pierced Mules; Glamour includes heeled and embellished options.
- For statement outfits: Animal prints, florals, bows, and other decorative uppers can make the shoe the focal point. These styles appear in ELLE’s and Glamour’s roundups.
Phia’s 2026 feature discusses choices such as vamp shape, underfoot support, leather versus suede, and flat-sole ease. Its excerpt listed the Kurt Geiger London Maddison Slides at $68 and Bottega Veneta Rosita Wedge Mules at $1,490 when the article was updated October 2, 2026; those are editorial price snapshots, not guaranteed current prices. Are mules good for walking all day?
Not necessarily. A mule’s open back means it does not provide ankle support, and fit, footbed, sole, heel, and how securely the shoe stays on your foot all matter. Glamour notes the ankle-support tradeoff and points to modest or block heels as options for people seeking more stability, but that does not establish that a particular pair is right for all-day walking.
For regular walking, compare the specific shoe rather than relying on its category name. Look for a footbed and sole that feel suitable to you, enough vamp coverage to keep the shoe on comfortably, and any adjustment features that help secure the fit. A product description can identify construction features; it cannot guarantee how the shoe will feel on your feet.

Glamour commerce editor Jake Henry Smith said of Birkenstock Boston clogs: “I’m always impressed by the level of arch support Birkenstock offers, and these are some of my go-to neighborhood shoes.” That is his personal assessment, not a performance test or a promise that the clogs will suit every wearer. See Glamour’s roundup.
What should you check before choosing a pair?
Two backless shoes can feel and function differently. Compare the details that affect coverage, fit, care, and the way the shoe works with an outfit:

- Upper and vamp: The vamp is the part covering the top of the foot. More coverage can create a different look and feel than a sandal-like or caged upper.
- Heel and sole: Distinguish a flat sole from a kitten, block, or wedge heel. Heel height and shape change the look and may affect how stable the shoe feels.
- Footbed: Check whether the product description specifies an anatomical or soft footbed, and assess whether it works for you rather than assuming a label guarantees comfort.
- Adjustability and security: Straps, buckles, or hook-and-loop closures can provide adjustment that a slip-on design lacks. Consider whether the shoe stays on comfortably as you walk.
- Material and care: Leather, suede, and synthetic or jelly-like materials have different appearances and care needs. Check the maker’s instructions for the specific pair.
- Occasion: A polished loafer silhouette may suit a different setting from a clog, woven mule, or embellished heel. Let the intended use narrow the choices.
Do mule shoes run true to size?
There is no sizing rule that applies to every mule. Use the size guidance for the exact model and retailer, and check the return policy before ordering if you are uncertain.
For one specific example, Louis Vuitton’s official Bom Dia Comfort Mule listing says the style runs small and recommends sizing one size up from your usual size. The listing also describes adjustable hook-and-loop and buckle straps, an anatomical footbed, and a lightweight rubber outsole. This is model-specific advice; it should not be generalized to other Louis Vuitton shoes or mules overall. Check the Bom Dia Comfort Mule listing.

Are clogs and mules the same thing?
They overlap, but the terms are not interchangeable in every context. Mules are backless shoes, while clogs describe a style that can also have an open back. The roundups use both labels: Glamour includes Birkenstock Boston Soft Footbed Clogs and Crocs Dylan Clogs among its mule-related picks. When shopping, inspect the actual shape, footbed, upper, and closure rather than relying on the category label alone.
