Watch-related incidents can involve a forceful street robbery, a quick snatch, or a theft by distraction that you notice only later. The safest approach is to reduce opportunities where practical, stay alert, and let the watch go if someone threatens you. These five scenarios are examples documented by police—not a universal ranking or proof that any one method is most common.
First, what counts as watch robbery?
Robbery involves taking property through force or threat; theft can happen without either. Police records may classify stolen-watch incidents under different offences, and local counts have recording limitations. Northamptonshire Police, for example, separates robbery from other theft categories in its local data and cautions that the figures reflect an unaudited live-system snapshot and interpretation limits. That disclosure is not a national estimate.
The distinction matters for understanding the examples below: not every missing watch was taken in a confrontation.
Five ways a watch theft or robbery may unfold

1. Direct confrontation or coordinated targeting
In a July 2022 warning, the San Francisco Police Department said investigators believed suspects were targeting people thought to own watches worth tens of thousands of dollars and believed some cases involved coordinated groups. SFPD reported investigating over two dozen high-value watch robberies since the beginning of 2022. That is a dated investigation count for San Francisco—not a current total, national trend, or measure of how likely an individual is to be targeted.

2. A fast approach near a road
The Metropolitan Police warns that thieves may use mopeds, bikes, or e-scooters to snatch valuables, approaching on pavements or near crossings. Its guidance addresses phones and valuables generally; it does not establish a watch-specific incident count. Facing oncoming traffic while walking can help you see an approach from the road, but keep awareness of people coming from ahead as well.
3. A staged request that takes your attention
In its December 2021 appeal, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary described people being approached with petitions, surveys, clipboards, or requests for information. Conversation and distraction preceded reports of missing watches. The force said more than 30 incidents had been reported in the preceding 12 months; that was a local figure relative to the appeal’s publication date, not a current rate.

An unsolicited request is not proof of wrongdoing, and not every fundraiser is suspicious. If someone says they represent a charity, Hampshire police advises checking visible identification and charity details. Keep enough distance to remain comfortable and attentive.
4. Distraction through unwanted closeness
Some reported encounters involved hugging, attempted kissing, wrist-grabbing, or sleight of hand. City of London Police described an attempted theft in which a man wrapped a leg around a victim’s foot to distract him; police photographs showed the watch clasp had been unhooked. These examples show why an encounter can feel confusing or overly familiar before a theft is noticed. They are not a reason to fight someone over a watch.

5. Realizing the watch is gone afterwards
In the Hampshire cases, some people noticed the loss only later. Reported settings included supermarket and golf-club car parks and areas outside homes. Delayed discovery is a pattern in those local reports, not a separate universal method or proof that every such incident involved robbery.
How to lower your exposure without escalating risk
- Cover a valuable watch where practical. Metropolitan Police advice specifically recommends hiding a valuable wristwatch under a sleeve.
- Keep your attention on your surroundings. Avoid letting phone use, headphones, or a distracting conversation absorb your attention when walking.
- Plan routes and journeys. Police.uk recommends planning unfamiliar journeys and choosing busy, well-lit routes. Its guidance also recommends licensed taxis or minicabs booked through a phone or app.
- Pay particular attention near roads and crossings. Be alert to people approaching on bikes or mopeds; facing oncoming traffic on the pavement can help you notice someone coming from the road.
- Change the situation if it feels wrong. Move toward a populated, well-lit place or join other people. SFPD recommends travelling with others; Toronto Police Service advises going to a well-lit populated area if you are being followed.
- Respond to a threat by protecting yourself. If someone threatens you, give up the watch. SFPD warns that suspects may be armed; Toronto Police Service advises not arguing, fighting, or chasing the suspect. A watch can be replaced; your safety comes first.
These precautions can reduce exposure, but they cannot guarantee that a theft will not happen. No watch, clasp, cover, or alarm is established by these police sources as a guarantee against robbery.

What to do after an incident
- Get somewhere safe. Do not pursue the person who took the watch.
- Contact local emergency services when safe. Use the emergency number and reporting process for your location.
- Report promptly. Toronto Police Service advises providing a description of the suspect and direction of travel if it is safe to do so; Hampshire police also urged prompt reporting.
- Write down what you remember. Record the time, location, approach, description, and direction of travel while details are fresh, provided doing so does not put you at risk.
Prepare records for identification and recovery
Before an incident, photograph valuable jewellery and keep a written description, including identifying details you can provide to police. Hampshire police recommends documenting valuable items and registering them with Immobilise. These steps can support identification and recovery; they do not prevent theft. You may also want to check whether your existing insurance covers the watch and what documentation your policy requires.
