There is no single best moisturizer for everyone with eczema. These 12 fragrance-free products are practical options identified in a 2026 NBC Select shopping guide that draws on product testing and regular use, dermatologist recommendations, and expert-guided research; this is a curated selection, not a clinical ranking or proof that any product treats or cures eczema. Use moisturizers as part of skin care, not as a substitute for prescribed treatment or medical advice.

How to choose an eczema moisturizer

Start with a fragrance-free cream or ointment if you can tolerate its texture. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises choosing cream or ointment over lotion to reduce irritation risk. “Unscented” does not necessarily mean fragrance-free, so check the current ingredient label rather than relying on front-of-package wording.

  • Match the format to how you will use it. Lotions spread easily; creams and balms are richer; ointments form a more occlusive layer but can feel greasy.
  • Check ingredients against your own sensitivities. An ingredient such as colloidal oatmeal, ceramides, glycerin, or petrolatum may suit some people, but no ingredient works for everyone.
  • Consider the area and the label. Verify whether the product is labeled for face or body and read age guidance, especially before using it on a baby or young child.
  • Think about everyday practicality. A pump can be easier for frequent use or caregiving; texture, package format, and price can affect whether a product fits your routine.

The National Eczema Association (NEA) Seal can help identify products reviewed under its program, but a seal is not a guarantee that a product will suit every person or need. Check the current formula and full ingredient list. The NBC Select guide identifies Eucerin Eczema Relief Flare-up Treatment as the exception among its listed products without the NEA Seal; seal status is not a universal measure of effectiveness.

1. Vanicream Moisturizing Cream

A thick, fragrance-free cream described as containing petrolatum and sorbitol. It may appeal to people seeking a simple-feeling moisturizer. Dermatologist Elaine Kung, MD, FAAD, told NBC Select that she sometimes advises patients to temporarily switch to Vanicream products while they and their clinician work out what may be irritating their skin. That is an approach to narrowing possible irritants, not a way to diagnose an allergy or a reason to stop prescribed treatment.

2. CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion

A fragrance-free lotion with ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Its lighter lotion format may be easier to spread than a thick cream or ointment, though the AAD generally favors creams or ointments for eczema-prone skin when tolerated.

3. La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm B5

A fragrance-free balm with panthenol, shea butter, and madecassoside. The guide lists it for face and body and describes spot use; follow the directions on the current package.

5. Eucerin Eczema Relief Flare-up Treatment

A fragrance-free product described as containing colloidal oatmeal, ceramides, and licorice root extract. 6. Aveeno Eczema Therapy Daily Moisturizing Cream

A fragrance-free, steroid-free cream described as containing colloidal oatmeal and ceramides. It is a moisturizer option for everyday skin care, not a medication or a replacement for treatment recommended by a clinician.

12. Theraplex Eczema Therapy

How to introduce a new product

  1. Read the label. Check the full ingredient list, fragrance status, intended body area, age directions, and application instructions. Avoid ingredients you already know irritate your skin.
  2. Test it first. The AAD advises applying a quarter-sized amount to the inside of your arm daily for 7–10 days. If the skin remains clear, proceed with use. Stop if you develop a reaction and seek medical advice if you are concerned.
  3. Use it consistently and comfortably. A product’s texture and packaging matter because a moisturizer only helps your routine if you can apply it as directed. If a product stings or worsens irritation, stop using it and contact a clinician for guidance.

Where moisturizer fits in eczema care

Atopic dermatitis care is individualized. The AAD says skin care often includes bathing, moisturizer, and gentle handling, while prescription treatments may also be part of a plan. Moisturizers support the skin-care routine; they do not cure eczema or replace medical assessment when symptoms need treatment.

For bathing, the AAD recommends keeping baths or showers short—5–10 minutes—and using warm rather than hot water. Apply moisturizer while skin is still damp. The NEA advises applying a thick layer within three minutes after bathing. For cleansing, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology recommends gentle, non-soap, fragrance-free cleansers; it gives Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser Bar as examples. These are cleansers, not substitutes for moisturizer.

A clinician may recommend treatments such as prescription medication or wet wraps in some cases. Ask for guidance on how these fit with bathing and moisturizing instead of trying to replace them with an over-the-counter cosmetic product.
