United Airlines is positioned to benefit from 36 planned new gates across two of its U.S. hub airports: 14 in the first phase of Concourse E at Washington Dulles and 22 in Houston’s Terminal B North Concourse. The total is the arithmetic sum of the two project counts—not a separately announced United gate allocation—and the available reports do not establish that United will control every gate.

FOX 5 reported that Dulles’s first phase would add 14 gates and primarily serve United. The report quoted Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority vice president Richard Golinowski: “This is the first change, the first addition of new gates to Dulles in 20 years,” (FOX 5, June 10, 2026).
At Houston, the March 11, 2026 Houston Airports update described the 22-gate North Concourse as part of a United-led Terminal B overhaul. Houston Airports’ project announcement places the concourse within a wider transformation, rather than treating the 22 gates as the whole project.
What the Houston project includes
The Terminal B North Concourse is approximately 765,000 square feet across three levels, according to Houston Airports. Its 22 gates are one part of a larger overhaul intended to expand capacity and improve passenger processing. The broader work also includes upgrades to South Concourse gates, expanded check-in and baggage areas, and increased passenger-processing capacity.

That distinction matters: the 22-gate figure describes the new North Concourse, not every gate or improvement included in Terminal B’s transformation. The airport’s March 2026 update said the project was on track for completion by fall 2026; it did not establish in the cited material that the work had since been completed.
What “United wins big” means—and what it does not
The projects add planned capacity at two airports where United has a hub presence, which may support the airline’s hub operations as the facilities come online. The evidence supports saying United is positioned to benefit: the Houston transformation is United-led, and the first phase at Dulles was reported as primarily serving United.

It does not show that all 36 gates are exclusively controlled by United, or quantify a competitive benefit. The cited sources do not establish changes in fares, routes, connection times, or market share attributable to the projects. More gates indicate added airport capacity; they do not, by themselves, prove how airlines will use that capacity or what travelers will pay.
