Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor Paris 2024, Forbes reported that Norway, Iceland, Sweden and the United Kingdom did not offer explicit national cash prizes for Olympic medals. That is not the same as saying their athletes received no funding—or that no athlete could receive a medal-related bonus. The distinction matters because medal payments can come from sports bodies and federations as well as governments.
Which four countries were reported not to offer Olympic medal prize money?
Forbes’s 2024 reporting named Norway, Iceland, Sweden and the United Kingdom among countries without explicit financial compensation for Olympic medals. Forbes said it contacted participating national Olympic committees or government sports ministries. Treat the list as a Paris 2024-era report, not a guarantee that policies remained unchanged for later Games.
The reporting concerns explicit medal prizes, not every form of athlete support. A grant, training investment or other assistance may be provided before the Games rather than as a cash reward for winning a medal.
Norway
Forbes included Norway in the no-explicit-prize group. Its reporting does not establish a specific Norwegian grant amount or eligibility rules, so the claim should not be expanded into a statement about all Norwegian athlete funding.

- REAL GLASS FRONT – Premium Clarity That Lasts Unlike most medal display frames on Amazon that use cheap acrylic or plastic, which scratch easily and become cloudy over time, this shadow box features a genuine glass front. Glass delivers superior optical clarity, letting every detail of your medals—engravings, ribbon textures, and metal finishes—shine through with zero distortion. It won’t yellow or haze after months of sunlight exposure, and the hard surface resists everyday scratches from dusting. While acrylic competitors look good out of the box but degrade quickly, real glass maintains a museum-grade appearance year after year. Easy to clean with a soft cloth.
- 4.5CM DEEP FRAME WITH WHITE MAT – Fits More Than You Think Standard photo frames are too shallow for medals, but this 5*7 inches shadow box offers 4.5cm interior depth—enough to hold medals naturally, including Olympic-style medals with thick ribbons. The extra included white mat adds a professional, gallery-quality touch while serving as a clean backing for DIY projects.
- 3-WAY VERSATILE DISPLAY – Wall, Table, or Freestanding Most medal frames force you to choose between hanging or sitting—this medal display case gives you all three. Use the pre-installed hanging hook for secure wall mounting in an entryway or home gym. Prefer a desk display? The built-in collapsible easel stand props the frame upright on any flat surface. You can also lay it flat or orient it horizontally or vertically to match your space. Whether you are an athlete showcasing race medals, a veteran displaying service awards, or a crafter making a gift, this 3-way versatility means one frame serves every need.
- DIY CRAFT READY – Create Personalized Memorabilia Displays This is not just a medal display holder—it is a blank canvas for creativity. The removable white mat can be used as a pinning surface for mounting medals, and small memorabilia. For advanced crafters, remove the mat to access the full 4.5cm depth for layering photos, ticket stubs, pressed flowers, handwritten notes, and other flat keepsakes alongside medals. Create themed shadow boxes for marathon seasons, military service, graduations, or team gifts. The possibilities are endless—from scrapbooking to collage art. Whether you are experienced or a first-timer, this frame gives you the space and structure to turn memories into art.
- The rear panel is secured with durable hardware, and the easel stand is reinforced to support a fully loaded display without sagging. The glass front is held by strong retained, not only cheap adhesive strips. Every component—glass, mat, backing board—is selected for longevity. This is a frame you will use for years, not a disposable product that ends up in a landfill after one season.
Iceland
Iceland was also included in Forbes’s group. That classification does not establish that Icelandic athletes receive no public, Olympic committee or other support.
Sweden
Swedish Olympic Committee secretary-general Åsa Edlund Jönsson described the committee’s emphasis on preparation: “We want our athletes to get all support before the Games to maximize the possibility of Olympic success.” Her comment explains a pre-Games support rationale; it is not a claim that Sweden provides no athlete funding.
United Kingdom
Forbes included the UK in the general no-prize characterization, but with an important sport-specific exception: British Athletics pays bonuses to track-and-field medalists independently of the UK government. The UK therefore cannot be described as a country where no medalist could receive a medal-related payment.

What counts as Olympic medal prize money?
The International Olympic Committee awards the Olympic medals, but it does not pay a universal cash prize to every medalist. Cash awards may instead come from a national government, a national Olympic committee, a sports body, a federation or a sponsor. Whether something is called a prize, bonus or incentive funding can also depend on who pays it and what conditions apply.
For example, the Australian Olympic Committee’s Paris 2024 Medal Incentive Funding guidelines cover medalists, including teams. The AOC says recipients have no service obligation and that it does not regard the funding as payment for services. That is a distinct framework, not proof that every form of athlete support is a medal prize.
Japan offers another illustration. The Japan Sports Agency lists Japanese Olympic Committee rewards of ¥5 million for gold, ¥2 million for silver and ¥1 million for bronze, and notes that sports federations may add awards. These are JOC rewards reported by the government agency, not payments made universally by the IOC.

How can a medalist be paid if a country has no national prize?
A country-level prize policy does not necessarily settle whether an athlete can receive a payment through their sport. At Paris 2024, World Athletics planned to pay $50,000 for each gold medal across 48 track-and-field events, for a stated total prize pool of $2.4 million. Relay teams were to split the award. The plan for silver and bronze awards was set to begin at LA 2028, rather than Paris. The Associated Press reported that World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said the payment was intended “to recognize that the revenue share that we receive is in large part because our athletes are the stars of the show.”
That was a federation-level track-and-field scheme, not an IOC payout or a universal cash award for Olympic medalists. It helps explain the UK caveat: a sports body can pay a bonus even when a country is described as lacking an explicit national medal prize.
How common were cash prizes for Paris 2024 medals?
Forbes reported that at least 33 of the 206 participating countries and territories had confirmed they would award cash prizes for Paris 2024 medals. Forbes described this as a count of confirmed prize-awarding delegations, not a count of those without prizes. It does not establish that the four countries above lacked other forms of athlete support.

- Coloch medal display case’s external dimension is 7.1x 9.2x 1.4 inches, and the visual area is 7.5x 5.5 in. It is designed for single medal or for a 7 inch picture. The internal depth is 0.7 inches, enough for most medals. Package includes 2 medal display cases, 8 double-sided sticky pad, and 6 hooks for hanging.( No medal included)
- Wood Frame& Glass: The medal display frame is made of wood, odorless, lightweight and solid. The glass window in a medal display frame provides a clear view of your medals. It allows the viewer to admire the intricate designs, symbols, and inscriptions on the medals.
- Two Ways of Displaying: The badge stand box is designed with a built-in bracelet, safe to put on your table. There are two hooks on the back, with which you can hang the frame on the wall.
- Show Your Glory: Black and white are very simple, and can be matched with any color of the medal, making the medal more dazzling. You can display your glory in your desk, bedroom, living room, or anywhere else.
- Wide Application: This medal display case can be used for medals for all kinds of sports, including Swimming, Marathon, Tennis, Basket, Running and so on. The stand can also be applied to medals for other competitions. Remove the cardboard and background paper, you will get a picture frame!
The issue is also one of policy choice. BBC Sport reported the IOC executive board’s objection to making national prize money a universal expectation: “It would downgrade the Olympic Games to an elitist event with competition amongst only ten per cent of all 206 NOCs.” The board also said: “It is a question of principle, efficiency and fair distribution, who pays such prize money.” These are the board’s statements, not a named individual’s remarks.
The practical answer to “Do Olympic athletes get prize money?” is: some do, depending on the country, sport and payer. An Olympic medal itself does not guarantee a cash payment from the IOC, and the Paris 2024 four-country list describes reported national prize policy—not the full range of funding or bonuses an athlete might receive.
