If you plan to claim Social Security retirement benefits in 2027, compare your estimated payments at different start dates, understand how work earnings may affect checks before full retirement age, and make a separate plan for Medicare at 65. The 2027 cost-of-living adjustment and earnings-test limits are not established by the figures cited here, so do not treat 2026 amounts as 2027 rules.
1. When you claim affects your monthly benefit for life
Social Security retirement benefits can generally begin anytime from age 62 through 70. Your age when payments start changes the monthly amount: claiming before full retirement age reduces it, while delaying beyond full retirement age increases it up to age 70. The adjustment is not limited to your first few checks; it affects your ongoing monthly benefit.

Compare age 62, full retirement age, and 70
For people born in 1960 or later, full retirement age is 67. The Social Security Administration (SSA) says claiming at 62 can mean a benefit as much as 30% lower than the full-retirement-age amount for this birth group. Waiting raises the monthly payment through age 70; there is no additional delayed-retirement increase for waiting beyond 70.

Use your own earnings record to make the comparison
Sign in to your my Social Security account to review your earnings history and personalized estimates. SSA’s retirement planner lets you compare different application dates. Applicants are generally at least 62 and have worked and paid Social Security taxes for at least 10 years; check your account and SSA’s eligibility information for your circumstances. When you are ready, apply through SSA’s online application.
2. Can you work and collect Social Security at the same time?
Yes. You can work while receiving retirement benefits, but if you are under full retirement age, SSA’s earnings test may temporarily withhold some benefits when your countable work earnings exceed the annual limit. Starting with the month you reach full retirement age, earnings no longer limit your benefits.

Do not use 2026 earnings limits as 2027 figures
SSA’s 2026 limits were $24,480 for someone under full retirement age for the entire year, and $65,160 for someone reaching full retirement age during 2026. For the latter, the limit applies to earnings before the month full retirement age is reached. These are annual limits for 2026, not 2027. Check SSA’s working while receiving retirement benefits information for the applicable limit before making a 2027 plan.

The SSA’s current cost-of-living adjustment page reports the 2.8% adjustment that applied to benefits payable in 2026; it is not a forecast of the 2027 adjustment. SSA says the next COLA will be announced in October 2026. Check the COLA information and the earnings-test page for updated figures before relying on them.

3. Medicare at 65 is a separate decision
Medicare eligibility generally begins at age 65. Delaying your Social Security retirement claim does not, by itself, settle whether or when you should enroll in Medicare. If you will turn 65 while still working, review your enrollment timing and coverage rather than assuming that postponing Social Security also postpones Medicare.
Check your coverage before delaying Part B
Some people with employer group health coverage may be able to delay Medicare Part B without the usual late-enrollment penalty, but whether that applies depends on their situation and coverage. Confirm with the employer benefits administrator and Medicare before delaying enrollment; a mistaken delay can lead to a penalty or a gap in coverage. See Medicare’s enrollment timing guidance.

Medicare Part B premiums may be deducted from Social Security payments. Include health-insurance costs and any expected deductions when comparing what different Social Security start dates would mean for your monthly budget.
Account for taxes when estimating what you can spend
Some Social Security benefits may be subject to federal income tax. SSA’s 2026 retirement publication says about 40% of people receiving Social Security pay income taxes on benefits. For a federal return filed as an individual, combined income of $25,000 to $34,000 may make up to 50% of benefits taxable; above $34,000, up to 85% may be taxable. For joint filers, the corresponding ranges are $32,000 to $44,000 and above $44,000.

These percentages describe the share of benefits that may be subject to income tax, not a tax rate applied to the whole benefit. The thresholds are from SSA’s 2026 publication; check current IRS rules for the tax year you are planning. Consider taxes alongside Medicare premiums and other healthcare costs when estimating take-home income.
