Zonar was not shut down: on Dec. 3, 2024, Continental announced the sale of Zonar to GPS Trackit for undisclosed terms. The combined company continues under the Zonar name.
What happened at Zonar Systems?
Zonar confirmed the elimination of 57 positions to GeekWire in an Aug. 16, 2024 report. The company had more than 300 employees across North America at the time, so the announcement identified a number of positions rather than an exact percentage of the workforce.
Founded in 2001 and based in Seattle, Zonar provides fleet-technology products including GPS tracking, electronic inspections, vehicle diagnostics, telematics hardware, maintenance tools and driver-safety systems. Its customers and markets included construction, transportation and utility fleets, as well as government and education transportation.
Michael Gould was Zonar’s CEO when the layoffs were announced. He had become CEO the previous year.

Why were the positions eliminated?
Gould said Zonar and Continental Automotive were adapting to changes in the global automotive industry. Continental Automotive leadership had already announced a restructuring effort, and that effort changed the division’s focus on several projects supported by Zonar.
Zonar said the markets it served remained unchanged. That explanation links the workforce reduction to Continental’s strategic reprioritization, but the available reporting does not establish that Zonar’s performance caused the layoffs, identify the departments affected or provide a detailed financial rationale.
What was Continental considering?
The August 2024 context included a broader review of Continental’s automotive structure and consideration of spinning off its automotive business. These were related but distinct developments:

- Restructuring effort: An initiative Continental Automotive had announced and was implementing.
- Possible spin-off: A strategic option under consideration, not a completed transaction at the time.
- Zonar’s layoffs: A specific workforce action at a Continental portfolio company.
The available evidence does not show that a completed spin-off directly caused the 57-position reduction.
Continental’s relationship with Zonar changed later
Continental acquired a majority stake in Zonar in 2016. Zonar continued operating under its own name during the August layoffs. Four months later, the ownership structure changed:

Continental’s sale means the August event should be understood as part of a period of strategic change, not as evidence that Continental abandoned or closed Zonar.

What does Zonar do today?
Zonar’s product categories include:
- GPS and vehicle tracking
- Electronic inspection reporting
- Fleet maintenance and vehicle diagnostics
- Telematics devices and vehicle data
- Driver-performance and safety tools
- School-bus and student-transportation technology
- Electronic logging device (ELD) compliance and video telematics
After the GPS Trackit transaction, Zonar says the former GPS Trackit capabilities—including tracking, video, ELD and fleet-management tools—operate within the Zonar family. Its acquisition page describes Zonar Ignition as the platform for that combined offering. The company’s current materials identify Charlie Kriete as CEO of the combined business, a later leadership position than Gould’s in August 2024.
Did the layoffs affect Zonar customers?
No public report in the available record documents customer cancellations, product shutdowns, service interruptions or a particular department’s cuts. Zonar said its markets remained unchanged in August 2024, and its post-sale announcements describe continued fleet-health and safety operations.

It means the 57-position announcement alone is not a basis for assuming that Zonar hardware or software was discontinued, that support staffing fell, or that a specific school district, trucking company or government customer was affected.

What existing customers should verify
- Whether current devices and software remain supported under the applicable contract
- Any changes to support contacts, renewal terms or service-level commitments
- Hardware compatibility and data migration requirements
- Data-retention, export and regulatory-compliance terms
- For public agencies, procurement and contract-approval requirements
GPS Trackit customers should likewise confirm how their account, devices and support arrangements map to the current Zonar platform. Zonar’s statements describe continuity, but contract-specific answers must come from the company or the customer’s agreement.

The public accounts do not identify:
- Which teams, offices or functions lost positions
- Severance, relocation or immigration details
- Whether a Washington WARN filing was made
- Any customer contract or product discontinued because of the cuts
- The detailed financial rationale for the reduction
- Whether additional layoffs followed
- Whether Continental’s restructuring legally or operationally caused the later sale
Filling those gaps with assumptions would overstate what is known. The documented facts are the 57-position reduction, Continental’s restructuring context and the subsequent sale to GPS Trackit.
What the event means for fleet-technology buyers
The layoffs alone do not establish that Zonar is unsafe to buy from or that customers should switch providers. Buyers evaluating Zonar or alternatives should compare the practical terms of each deployment:

Zonar does not publish standard dollar pricing in the cited materials, so prospective buyers should request a current quote rather than rely on an assumed price. Fleets considering alternatives can review Samsara, Motive, Geotab and Verizon Connect, but product fit depends on the fleet’s sector, compliance needs and existing hardware.
The most accurate bottom line is straightforward: Zonar cut 57 positions in August 2024 during a Continental restructuring review. Continental then sold the business to GPS Trackit in December 2024, and the company continued under the Zonar brand rather than shutting down.
