Amazon has used employee badge-swipe data as an office-attendance signal, and reporting indicates that the system became more detailed as the company moved from a three-day expectation to a five-day corporate-office mandate. The evidence does not show that every Amazon worker is monitored in the same way, that a swipe proves productive work, or that a fixed badge count automatically triggers termination.
The short answer
A badge scan records use of an employee credential at an Amazon-controlled workplace or secured area. Amazon has used those records for facilities and occupancy purposes and, since 2023, to identify apparent noncompliance with corporate return-to-office expectations. GeekWire reported that Amazon acknowledged sending some employees messages based on individual badge activity: GeekWire, August 2023.
Amazon said in 2023 that some reporting shared with managers was aggregated and anonymized for purposes such as building planning and emergency accounting: Yahoo/Business Insider report. Later reports based on internal materials describe raw attendance information and a manager-facing dashboard. Those reports suggest that visibility, metrics and enforcement practices changed over time; Amazon has not published a complete technical specification.
How the office policy changed
| Date | Policy or reported development | Source |
|---|---|---|
| June 10, 2021 | Amazon issued hybrid-work guidance built around a three-day office baseline for eligible corporate roles, with exceptions and team flexibility. | Amazon |
| February 2023 | CEO Andy Jassy announced that many corporate employees were expected to work from an office at least three days per week, beginning May 1, 2023. | Amazon |
| August 2023 | Reports said some employees received notices that their badge activity did not meet the three-day expectation. | GeekWire |
| September 16, 2024 | Amazon announced a return to its pre-pandemic corporate-office model: five days per week, subject to exceptions. | Amazon |
| January 2, 2025 | The five-day expectation took effect for covered corporate employees. | Amazon |
| December 2025 | Business Insider-related reporting said a revised dashboard began rolling out, with additional attendance and location fields. | People Matters |
These rules apply primarily to eligible corporate employees. Fulfillment-center, transportation, retail, data-center, laboratory, customer-support, sales, field, remote and other roles may have different arrangements.

What a badge swipe actually proves
A swipe or scan generally shows that a credential was used at a particular access point. By itself, it does not prove that the employee:
- worked productively or remained in the building all day;
- attended meetings or collaborated with colleagues;
- worked at the correct assigned location; or
- performed work rather than making a brief visit.
Records can also be incomplete. A scan may be missing because of a malfunction, an unsecured entrance, a different facility, customer or partner travel, an approved remote exception, or a forgotten badge. Amazon has not publicly documented whether every location requires exit scans or exactly how entry and exit events are converted into a qualifying “day.” Its public Seattle coverage shows employees badging into offices but does not explain the calculation method: Amazon Seattle coverage.
From aggregated occupancy data to individual attendance signals
The apparently conflicting descriptions can reflect different systems, purposes and dates rather than one simple contradiction.

Occupancy and facilities reporting
In 2023, Amazon said some information supplied to managers was aggregated and anonymized. That description fits building-use analysis, facilities planning and knowing how many people are on-site during an emergency.
Individual notices
GeekWire separately reported that employees received direct messages based on individual badge swipes, including cases employees said were inaccurate. Amazon acknowledged the messages were tied to individual activity.
Different access layers
Team-level dashboards, HR or compliance reviews, security logs and facilities reports may expose different fields to different people. Public materials do not establish Amazon’s internal access-control architecture, so “anonymous” should not be treated as a description of every later attendance process.

What reportedly changed under the five-day expectation
Business Insider-related reporting said Amazon removed labels such as “inconsistent badger” and “zero badger” and instead gave managers raw or less-processed attendance information. The reports said managers had more discretion to interpret the data and decide whether to raise it with an employee: Business Insider report and related report.
A later Business Insider report, summarized by People Matters, described a dashboard that reportedly began rolling out in December 2025. Citing an internal document, it said managers and HR could see some combination of:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- how often an employee entered an office;
- the time reportedly spent in offices;
- the buildings where badge events occurred;
- an eight-week rolling view; and
- data refreshed daily at about 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
Those details are attributed to internal-document reporting, not an Amazon-published product specification. They may not apply to every manager, employee, organization or location.

Is Amazon measuring hours or just attendance days?
Public reporting points to an evolving or possibly multi-tool system. Earlier 2025 coverage described a process focused mainly on raw badge events and days attended, without recording hours in the office. Later coverage described a dashboard capable of showing time spent. The safest conclusion is that Amazon’s tools may have moved beyond a simple entry count, but the calculation rules, minimum time for a day to count and manager permissions remain publicly undocumented.
“Coffee badging”
Coffee badging means entering briefly—perhaps for one meeting—to create an attendance record before working elsewhere. Business Insider-related reporting said Amazon monitored attendance by the hour in an effort to address this behavior under the earlier three-day policy. “Coffee badging” is a descriptive term, not a published Amazon violation category.
Can badge data affect performance or employment?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than “a missed swipe gets you fired.” Badge information can identify apparent noncompliance and prompt a manager conversation. Later reporting says managers have discretion over interpretation and next steps.

No available source establishes a universal automatic threshold for termination, a performance-improvement plan, compensation or a rating. The 2023 messages were described as a way to identify apparent gaps and guide employee-manager discussions: GeekWire.

Amazon’s September 2024 announcement recognized approved remote arrangements and circumstances such as illness, a sick child, a home emergency, customer or partner travel, other extenuating circumstances and work requiring a more isolated environment: Amazon’s announcement.
Employees should also account for:
- a forgotten, damaged or malfunctioning badge;
- an entrance that failed to register a scan;
- work at a different assigned building;
- field, customer or partner work;
- an approved exception not yet reflected in the reporting system; and
- a brief visit that does not represent a full workday.
Employees should not badge in for another person or use informal workarounds. Shared or improperly used credentials create separate access-control and security issues.
Badge monitoring is not the same as full location surveillance
An access event is not automatically continuous GPS tracking, laptop-location monitoring, Wi-Fi triangulation, camera identification, keystroke logging or productivity measurement. Some discussions speculate that Amazon could combine those sources, but the available evidence does not establish one comprehensive system used for all corporate employees. Keep badge records, network data, cameras and device telemetry as distinct categories unless Amazon documents a particular integration.
Amazon’s stated rationale—and the measurement problem
Amazon says office work supports collaboration, invention, learning, cultural connection, faster decisions and employee development. Jassy’s September 2024 message said the company believed the advantages of working together in person were significant: Amazon.
Badge data measures physical access more readily than it measures collaboration, contribution or effectiveness. That creates a practical trade-off: access records can help plan space and identify apparent attendance gaps, but they can also produce false positives, inconsistent management decisions and incentives for short visits rather than meaningful teamwork.
Quick Recap
What remains unknown
- The exact minimum time required for an office day to count.
- Whether entry and exit events are always used together.
- How long attendance records are retained.
- Which managers can see individual records.
- Whether badge data is routinely combined with laptop, Wi-Fi, VPN or camera data.
- Whether attendance information directly affects ratings, pay or promotion.
- Whether the reported dashboard is global or limited to particular organizations and locations.
What employees can do when the record looks wrong
- Confirm the work-location rule that applies to your role and office.
- Keep documentation for approved remote work, illness, travel, customer visits and other exceptions.
- Record dates and locations when a badge failed or work occurred away from the assigned building.
- Ask your manager or official Amazon HR/employee-support channel how the attendance record was calculated.
- Request correction through official channels rather than attempting to manipulate access records.
