That is a developer target, not an announced mainnet activation date, and the report says there is not yet an integrated wallet flow for the approach. It also does not mean Zcash as a whole is quantum-resistant: broader work on shielded payments and recovery remains proposed or in development.
What the January target covers—and what it doesn’t
Unchained reported on October 9, 2026, that Roman Akhtariev said the Zakura team plans for post-quantum signature opcodes to land in Zcash in January. The report gives no mainnet activation date. The target concerns protocol support for post-quantum signatures, not a confirmed network-wide switch or a feature holders can already use through an integrated wallet.

The initial focus is transparent addresses
According to Unchained’s account of Zakura’s explanation, a transparent address holds a hash of a public key. Spending from the address reveals that public key on-chain. If a spend leaves funds behind, they may be sent to a new address whose public key has not yet been disclosed. The rationale is that keeping the key undisclosed could help protect those funds if public keys become vulnerable while the hash remains secure.
The reported interim design pairs a hash-based one-time signature scheme, WOTS, with the usual elliptic-curve key to rotate addresses. Unchained says wallets do not yet have an integrated flow for this method. The January target therefore should not be read as a ready-to-use wallet upgrade or as a guarantee that funds will automatically move to fresh addresses.

Private wallet lookups are not private transactions
Repeatedly asking a server about many rotating addresses can reveal that the addresses likely belong to one wallet, Unchained reports. Zakura’s proposed answer is private information retrieval (PIR): a wallet retrieves a record without telling the server which specific record it requested.
The described process divides confirmed transparent activity into block ranges. A wallet checks compact filters locally, then makes a private lookup when a filter suggests a possible match. Zakura’s reported engineering estimate is roughly 15 KB of filter data for a range containing 10,000 distinct payment scripts. The report also says this approach could rebuild wallet history from a mnemonic, including addresses that currently have no funds.

Unchained reports that PIR is coming to the Vizor wallet and that an experimental version can be tested by enabling “Private queries” in settings. This is a wallet-lookup privacy feature, not the January protocol target. It does not conceal transparent transactions: those remain public on-chain, as Unchained notes.
Why the “bunker mode” warning is context, not proof of an immediate threat
Unchained connected the Zcash announcement to an October 7, 2026 call by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake to plan for “bunker mode”: moving funds to fresh addresses that have never signed a transaction. The report says Drake considered it reasonable to brace for ECDSA breaking before quantum computers arrive, with a worst-case timeline of “in months not years.” It also reports that he urged holders not to rush or panic.

That timeline is Drake’s reported worst-case warning, not an established forecast or industry consensus. The announcement is not evidence that a quantum computer can break today’s signatures. For Zcash holders, the relevant distinction is between planning and an available, activated migration path: the January target is not itself an instruction to move funds now.

The projects address different parts of the problem and are at different stages. A signature change for transparent addresses does not, on its own, deliver private shielded payments, recover attacked funds, or complete a network-wide transition.

Ironwood is a bridge, not quantum-proofing
Shielded Labs described Ironwood notes as quantum-recoverable since NU6.3, while explicitly cautioning that this does not make Zcash post-quantum today. Hopwood’s January 28, 2026 community-forum explanation makes the boundary clear: “This proposal does not itself allow recovering the funds in case of quantum (or other) attacks on the elliptic-curve discrete log problem.” In other words, the proposal may support a later recovery protocol; it is not recovery itself, complete resistance to quantum attacks, or protection of privacy against discrete-log-breaking attacks.

Tachyon and Epoch address longer-term shielded-system work
Tachyon’s roadmap considers more than one design path. One combines PIR with post-quantum key exchange to aim for scalable post-quantum privacy with minimal user-experience change. A parallel line explores other scalable payment protocols, which may involve trade-offs in user experience or backup and recoverability. These are roadmap directions, not a promise that a particular construction will be activated.

Epoch is a separate research and engineering effort. Shielded Labs’ October 1 announcement set an end-of-2027 target for a production-ready cryptographic implementation that could serve as a basis for a future upgrade; it did not announce an activation date. The announcement put the maturity plainly: “This does not make Zcash post-quantum today, but it creates a bridge to that future transition.”

What Zcash users should take from the announcement
- Treat January as the Zakura team’s target for signature opcodes, not a scheduled mainnet activation or a current wallet capability.
- Keep the scope in view: the reported initial target is transparent-address signature support. PIR can conceal which wallet records a server is asked to retrieve, but it does not make transparent payments private.
- Do not conflate a recoverability proposal, shielded-protocol research, and a post-quantum signature target. They concern different protections and have different maturity levels.
- Nothing in the report establishes that holders need to make an urgent move because a quantum attack is imminent. Drake’s warning was framed as planning for a worst case and paired with a call not to panic.
