What happened in September 2024?
YouTube Premium subscribers in several countries reported price increases in September 2024, affecting individual and family plans. The reports described a regional pricing wave, not one worldwide change with a single new rate. Neowin covered increases reaching about 55%, but the available reporting does not establish a complete, authoritative country-by-country price list. Neowin’s September 2024 report is useful context, but individual prices should be treated as reported examples rather than a global Google price table.

Local prices are the most useful basis for judging the impact. Converting each country’s price into U.S. dollars can obscure what subscribers there actually pay, because exchange rates and taxes differ.
How does a price increase reach 55%?
One reported family-plan example rose from €17.99 to €27.99. That is a €10 increase: €10 ÷ €17.99 × 100 = approximately 55.6%. The calculation applies to that example; it does not mean every plan or subscriber’s bill went up by that amount.

A family plan can have a higher percentage increase than an individual plan, and the starting price matters. To assess any reported hike, compare the old and new price for the same plan, in the same currency and market.
What is known about the affected countries and plans?
Reports described increases in multiple countries, particularly in Europe and other markets outside the United States, and included both individual and family plans. The strongest widely cited percentage example is a family-plan rise from €17.99 to €27.99, but the evidence available does not support assigning that example to a country or presenting a verified exhaustive country list. Do not infer that a price reported by one subscriber applies to every customer in that market.

How does the 2024 wave differ from the U.S. increase in 2026?
The United States had a separate increase announced in April 2026. The figures below are U.S.-specific prices reported for that change, not evidence of the 2024 international increases or current prices elsewhere. New subscribers were charged the new rates immediately; existing subscribers began seeing them in billing cycles in June 2026, according to 9to5Google’s report.

YouTube said the U.S. increase would help maintain the service and support creators and artists. That is the company’s explanation for the U.S. change, not a verified cause for every 2024 regional adjustment. For prices and plan availability where you live, check YouTube’s local Premium offer.

Why does YouTube change subscription prices?
Google’s guidance says subscription prices can change for reasons including market conditions, inflation, local taxes, licensing costs, promotions, product changes or broader business needs. It does not identify one market-specific cause for the September 2024 increases. Google says it normally gives existing members at least 30 days’ notice of a recurring-price increase and explains how changes are billed in its price-change guidance.
How to check your actual price and decide what to do
- Open YouTube and select your profile picture.
- Choose Purchases and memberships.
- Check the plan name, billing interval, payment method and displayed renewal price.
- Compare the displayed amount with your previous charge or the price-change email. If you subscribe through Apple or Google Play, check that billing channel’s account and support details as well; third-party billing can affect the price and where billing issues are handled.
- Decide whether to keep, change, pause or cancel the plan based on the features you use and the renewal date shown in your account.
Existing members are generally charged the new rate starting with a later billing cycle, normally at least 30 days after notice. In some countries, members may need to acknowledge and accept the increase to continue service. Taxes, bank fees and currency movements can also affect the final amount. Check Google’s billing guidance for the terms that apply to your account.

Cancellation generally ends access at the close of the current billing period, rather than immediately. If you rejoin later, you may be charged the then-current rate instead of retaining an older price. Check the renewal date and your account’s terms before canceling; the Paid Service Terms cover cancellations and third-party billing.

- Premium Lite: If offered in your country, it may suit someone who mainly wants fewer ads and does not need the full plan’s feature set. Availability and features vary; check the local offer rather than assuming Lite is universally available or ad-free in every context.
- Family plan: It can make sense when multiple people in the same household use YouTube or YouTube Music. Google requires family members to live at the same residential address as the family manager and conducts periodic electronic check-ins. It is not a plan for unrelated friends living at different addresses. See YouTube’s Premium rules and its family-plan information.
- Student plan: Eligible students may qualify for a discounted plan where it is offered. Eligibility and verification depend on country; check the student eligibility information before assuming you qualify.
- Cancel or switch: If you rarely watch YouTube or do not use background playback, downloads or YouTube Music, compare the renewal price with the value those features provide to you. A music-only service may fit music-first listeners better, but it does not replace YouTube’s ad-free video experience.
Why a foreign-price workaround can backfire
YouTube requires subscribers to represent their country of residence accurately. It may cancel a subscription if someone misrepresents their location or uses a VPN to get around regional availability or pricing rules. The service is also intended to be used predominantly in the country where it was purchased; extended travel or relocation can prompt action on the subscription. Review YouTube’s country, travel and Premium rules rather than relying on a location workaround.
