YouTube Premium Individual is designed for one person and one Google account. YouTube Premium Family covers the family manager plus up to five additional people—six eligible household members total—using separate Google accounts.
For U.S. subscribers, reported 2026 prices are about $15.99 per month for Individual and $26.99 per month for Family. That makes Family cheaper than buying two Individual plans, but only when both users genuinely live in the same household.

What both YouTube Premium plans include
Individual and Family generally provide the same Premium experience for each covered account:

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]

- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Ad-free YouTube videos.
- YouTube Music Premium at no separate subscription charge.
- Offline downloads in the YouTube and YouTube Music mobile apps.
- Background playback and screen-off listening on supported mobile apps.
- Access on supported phones, computers, smart TVs, game consoles, and other devices when signed in to the relevant Google account.
- Selected member features such as Smart Downloads, Picture-in-Picture where applicable, and Continue Watching.
Premium does not remove every promotional message. Creator-read sponsorships, promotions embedded in videos or podcasts, some live-event promotions, and certain Primetime Channel advertisements may remain. YouTube Premium also does not include YouTube TV, NFL Sunday Ticket, channel memberships, or Primetime Channel purchases. See YouTube’s explanation of Premium benefits and exclusions.
Offline downloads and background playback are primarily mobile-app features, while ad-free viewing is available across supported YouTube devices. Availability can differ by device and app; YouTube lists supported devices and limitations in its device support guidance.
How the Individual plan works
The Individual plan is intended for one person using one Google account. It is the simplest option when only one person needs Premium, and it avoids managing a Google family group.
YouTube’s stated limit is one YouTube video or audio stream at a time. Sharing the login with another person does not create separate profiles, does not increase the stream allowance, and mixes watch history, subscriptions, playlists, and recommendations. YouTube describes the Individual plan as designed for one user rather than a multi-person arrangement; see its membership information.

Individual may also be the better choice if you qualify for a student plan or an annual plan. Annual plans are prepaid, generally non-recurring, and available only in selected countries, including the United States. They are for individual users, not six-person household access. YouTube says annual plans generally cannot be paused and are not refundable under ordinary terms; check the current annual-plan terms before paying.
How the Family plan works
The Family plan has one family manager and up to five additional members. Each person accepts an invitation and uses their own Google account, so recommendations, subscriptions, playlists, libraries, and watch histories remain separate. It is not a Netflix-style set of profiles inside one shared YouTube login.
The family manager purchases the plan, creates or uses a Google family group, invites members, and can remove members or manage family-group decisions. A regular personal Google account is required; Google Workspace accounts cannot start or join a YouTube family plan. Google’s Family plan guidance explains the setup and eligibility requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
Children can be included in a family group, but age restrictions and supervised-account limitations may affect what they can watch and which features they can use. Do not assume that every child or supervised account receives an identical interface or identical access to every Premium feature.

The most important rule: everyone must live together
Family is for one household, not simply for people who are related. YouTube requires family members to live at the same residential address as the family manager. Friends, relatives, or adult children living elsewhere are not made eligible merely because they belong to the same family group.
YouTube may check household eligibility. If it cannot confirm that a member belongs to the same household, it may pause that person’s Premium benefits. The exact verification process and timing can vary. YouTube’s family-plan help page and paid-service restrictions provide the applicable terms.
This means a family plan is not a compliant way to split one subscription between two addresses. Avoid VPN-based country switching, unofficial account sellers, or family-plan resellers; regional and household restrictions still apply.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow many people can stream at once?
Family’s practical advantage is not just account separation. It also supports more simultaneous use. YouTube states that an Individual plan permits one YouTube video or audio stream at a time, while a Family plan permits up to six simultaneous YouTube video or audio streams across the household.

- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
That limit is not universal for every category of content. For free movies, YouTube states a limit of one device for Individual and up to four devices for Family. Multiple browsers on one device may count as separate streams. See YouTube’s streaming limits for the detailed rules.
What does Family cost compared with separate Individual plans?
Using reported U.S. monthly prices of $15.99 for Individual and $26.99 for Family, Family becomes cheaper as soon as two eligible household members use it.
| Regular users | Separate Individual plans | Family plan | Approximate Family saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $15.99 | $26.99 | Individual saves $11.00 |
| 2 | $31.98 | $26.99 | $4.99 |
| 3 | $47.97 | $26.99 | $20.98 |
| 4 | $63.96 | $26.99 | $36.97 |
| 5 | $79.95 | $26.99 | $52.96 |
| 6 | $95.94 | $26.99 | $68.95 |
At those prices, the approximate Family cost per active user is $13.50 for two users, $9.00 for three, $6.75 for four, $5.40 for five, and $4.50 for six.
Price note: These are reported U.S. monthly prices checked in August 2026, not worldwide or permanently fixed prices. YouTube prices may differ because of taxes, location, promotions, legacy billing, account eligibility, and whether you subscribe through an app store or another billing channel. Which plan fits your situation?
Choose Individual if:
- Only one person will use Premium.
- The other intended users live at different addresses.
- You want the simplest possible billing arrangement.
- You qualify for a student or annual Individual plan.
- You do not want to manage a Google family group.
Choose Family if:
- At least two people will use Premium regularly.
- All members genuinely live in the same household.
- Members want separate accounts and personalized recommendations.
- Several people may watch or listen at the same time.
- The household also wants YouTube Music Premium on separate accounts.
Common scenarios
- One adult: Individual is usually the better value.
- A couple living together: Compare Family with YouTube’s two-person plan if that option appears for your account and location.
- Parents and children at one address: Family can cover up to six eligible accounts, subject to child and supervised-account limitations.
- Roommates at the same address: The household rule may fit, but the family manager controls billing and membership, so agree on payment and access responsibilities.
- Adult children living elsewhere: Do not use Family as a workaround. Each person should choose an eligible individual option.
- Eligible student: Check the student plan before paying the standard Individual price. Eligibility must be verified and may need periodic renewal; see YouTube’s student-plan information.
- One user wanting prepaid access: Check whether the annual Individual plan is available and whether its live price beats monthly billing.
- A viewer mainly seeking fewer ads: Review Premium Lite carefully. It is a reduced offering, not a substitute for full Premium’s complete ad-free coverage, YouTube Music Premium, downloads, and background play. Check the current Premium Lite terms for U.S. availability and exclusions.
Other details worth knowing
YouTube Music is included
YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium benefits. Family members receive those benefits through their own accounts, including ad-free music, background play, and offline listening where supported. Podcast advertising or creator promotions may still appear. YouTube explains the relationship between the services in its YouTube Music help information and download guidance.
YouTube Music downloads generally require periodic reconnection. YouTube Music says downloaded music can remain available for up to 30 days without an internet connection. Do not assume that every offline limit is identical across apps, devices, and content.
Leaving a family group does not delete a YouTube account
If a member leaves the family group, that person loses the shared Premium benefits but keeps their Google account, subscriptions, playlists, watch history, and personal YouTube data. Losing membership access is different from deleting the account.
Switching plans
You can review available membership options through YouTube’s membership-management page, but the exact conversion path can depend on your current subscription, billing platform, and account. Do not assume that switching automatically produces a particular refund, credit, or immediate billing adjustment. Start with YouTube’s membership-management guidance.
Bottom line
Choose Individual when one person needs YouTube Premium. Choose Family when at least two eligible people live at the same address and want separate accounts, simultaneous access, and YouTube Music Premium. At reported 2026 U.S. prices, Family saves money over two or more Individual plans—but the household requirement matters more than the relationship between the users.
