Microsoft account money can pay for eligible purchases in Microsoft Store and Xbox marketplaces, including games, apps, downloadable content, some in-app purchases, eligible movies and TV content, selected hardware and accessories, and Xbox-related subscriptions.
It is not a general-purpose bank balance. Microsoft says it generally cannot pay for Microsoft 365 subscriptions, past-due subscription charges, cash, gift cards, or purchases billed outside Microsoft. Eligibility also depends on the product, store, country, currency, and account.

First, distinguish your account from its balance
A Microsoft account is your sign-in for services such as Microsoft Store, Windows, Xbox, and subscriptions. The account itself is not a payment method.

Your account may also contain a Microsoft account balance created by redeeming a gift card, receiving a refund or promotion, or adding money. Separately, you can save payment methods such as a card, PayPal, bank account, or mobile billing where supported. Available methods vary by country or region; see Microsoft’s payment-method guidance.

What Microsoft account balance can usually buy
| Purchase | Can the balance pay? | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox games | Usually | Confirm the payment option at checkout. |
| Game add-ons and downloadable content | Usually | Availability depends on the store and region. |
| Windows apps and PC games | Usually | The item must use Microsoft Store billing. |
| In-app purchases | Sometimes | Only when Microsoft Store handles the transaction. |
| Movies and TV | Eligible content | Catalogs and purchase options vary by region. |
| Surface, Xbox, PCs, phones, and accessories | Eligible products | Not every product or region accepts account funds. |
| Xbox-related subscriptions | Supported in Microsoft’s guidance | Subscription and recurring-billing conditions still apply. |
Microsoft’s spending guidance lists Xbox products, apps, games, movies, TV, devices, accessories, software, services, and other eligible content. Its account-funding guidance also specifically mentions games, in-app purchases, physical goods, and Xbox-related subscriptions.
Xbox games and content
Account funds can generally be used for Xbox games, add-ons, downloadable content, and eligible in-game purchases. Xbox hardware and accessories may also qualify when purchased through a Microsoft Store checkout that offers the balance.
Apps, games, and in-app purchases
Paid Microsoft Store apps, PC games, add-ons, and some in-app purchases can use the account’s payment methods. However, an app may send the transaction to its developer, Apple, Google, or another billing platform. In that case, Microsoft balance may not appear and another payment method may be required. Microsoft’s in-app purchase guidance explains this distinction.

Movies and TV
Eligible movies, shows, episodes, rentals, or purchases may be charged to the balance where the localized Microsoft store supports them. Do not assume that every title or purchase format is available in every country.
Hardware and accessories
Microsoft identifies Surface devices, PCs, phones, Xbox products, and accessories among the products that may be bought with account money. Product and regional exceptions apply; for example, Microsoft’s account-funding guidance says gift cards cannot be used to buy hardware in Taiwan.
What Microsoft account money generally cannot buy
- Microsoft 365 subscriptions: Microsoft’s current account-funding guidance says money added to a Microsoft account cannot be used to purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Past-due Microsoft subscriptions: Microsoft says account balance, gift cards, and subscription cards cannot settle a past-due subscription. Use an accepted payment method and select Pay now.
- Cash or cash equivalents: The balance cannot normally be exchanged for cash, gift certificates, gift cards, or similar payment products.
- Externally billed purchases: A third-party website or billing platform may not accept Microsoft balance.
- Every Microsoft subscription: “Microsoft subscription” is too broad a category. Xbox-related subscriptions may qualify, while Microsoft 365 does not under the cited guidance.
See Microsoft’s past-due subscription instructions if a subscription is showing an overdue amount.

How to use the balance at checkout
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that contains the funds.
- Open the relevant Microsoft Store, Xbox, or Microsoft product page and add the item to your cart.
- Proceed to checkout and review the payment section.
- Look for Microsoft account balance, Microsoft balance, or the available account funds.
- Check whether the balance covers the total price and whether Microsoft permits another payment method for any remainder.
- Review the final total and payment source before selecting Buy or Place order.
Split payment is not guaranteed. A product, subscription, region, or recurring-billing arrangement may require a card or another supported method even when your account has money.
To review your funds and saved methods, sign in to your Microsoft account’s billing or payment area. For subscriptions, open Services & subscriptions and select the specific subscription. Microsoft’s labels can vary by device and region; its buying guide describes the general checkout process.
If the balance does not appear
- Check the account: Sign out and confirm that you are using the account where the code or funds were redeemed.
- Check the product: Microsoft 365, a past-due subscription, or an externally billed purchase may not qualify.
- Check the region: Confirm that the account, store, currency, and gift card are intended for the same country or region.
- Check the amount: The balance may be insufficient, and split payment may not be supported.
- Check subscriptions: Open Services & subscriptions for overdue charges, recurring-billing requirements, or account restrictions.
- Check family settings: Family or child-account purchase controls may require approval.
- Contact support: Use Microsoft’s Microsoft Store and billing support if a redeemed code or balance is missing.
If an in-app purchase uses another billing system, Microsoft balance will not necessarily be available. For an unexpected purchase, review your order history and family-account activity, then change security or purchase-approval settings and contact Microsoft promptly.

Region, currency, and balance limits
Microsoft says account funds do not transfer when you change the account’s country or region. Spend the balance before moving the account. A region change can also affect apps, games, movies, subscriptions, and availability. See Microsoft’s country and region guidance.
Gift cards are region-sensitive. Redeem a card intended for the account’s country or region, and confirm the correct account before redeeming: the entire value is added to the account currently signed in. Do not use a VPN or false billing address to bypass regional rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft publishes general limits of up to USD 1,000 added or redeemed per day, USD 1,000 spent per day, and USD 1,000 stored in one account, with a possible combined limit of USD 5,000 across additional accounts registered to the same person. Local limits may be lower or expressed in local currency; examples include EUR 150 in France, AUD 1,520 in Australia, and INR 50,000 in India. Check Microsoft’s current limits page for your market.

Microsoft balance versus a card or PayPal
Stored balance is useful for a fixed-budget Xbox purchase, a one-time app or game, eligible digital content, or a gift. It limits spending and avoids entering a card for every purchase.
A card or PayPal is usually more suitable for Microsoft 365, recurring billing, past-due charges, purchases that exceed the balance, third-party billing, or transactions requiring a conventional payment method. A Microsoft account balance is restricted store credit—not a bank account, debit card, or transferable wallet.
Quick Recap
Before redeeming or spending
- Confirm the gift card or code matches your country or region.
- Sign in to the intended Microsoft account before redeeming.
- Check the item’s payment options rather than relying only on its store category.
- Do not assume Microsoft 365, every subscription, or every in-app purchase qualifies.
- Keep another accepted payment method available for recurring, overdue, or externally billed purchases.
