“You Used to Be the Best”: Southwest’s Assigned Seats Draw Complaints, but Their Reach Is Unclear

Southwest’s assigned-seat system has prompted complaints, but their prevalence is unknown. Here’s what changed and what travelers should check before booking.

Southwest’s assigned-seat system has drawn complaints from some travelers, but the available accounts do not show how widespread opposition is. The airline ended open seating on January 27, 2026, replacing it with seat assignments and boarding groups shaped by fare, seat location, loyalty status, and eligible card benefits. Southwest has cited customer-preference research in support of the change; that pre-launch research and post-launch complaints measure different things.

What changed at Southwest

Assigned seats became available for travel beginning January 27, 2026, ending Southwest’s open-seat boarding model. Passengers now receive a seat assignment, and boarding groups reflect factors including fare, seat category, loyalty status, and eligible cardmember benefits. The Associated Press described the transition ahead of launch, and Southwest’s current assigned-seating information explains the airline’s seat categories and fare-related benefits.

Why some travelers are unhappy

Public criticism includes individual accounts of disliking the new system and reports of seat mix-ups. In an April 2026 personal account, one traveler said they preferred the old model and had to correct a seat mix-up on two of four flights. A July 2026 Reddit discussion titled “I Hate the New Southwest” also contains critical comments. These examples show that complaints exist, but an individual account and a self-selected online thread cannot establish how common the experience is.

The available sources do not quantify the scale of post-launch opposition or establish a representative trend. So “uproar” captures a visible reaction, not a measured verdict from Southwest passengers as a whole.

What Southwest says customers wanted

Southwest has pointed to company research indicating that 80% of current customers and 86% of prospective customers preferred assigned seats over the open-seating model. The Washington Post reported those figures as an account from Southwest executive Jordan. The article does not provide the survey’s sample, field dates, question wording, or methodology, so the percentages should be treated as company-research findings reported by a newspaper—not independently validated estimates of public opinion.

Those figures describe reported preferences before the change, not how customers feel after flying under the new system. They do not cancel out individual complaints, and the complaints do not establish that most customers oppose assigned seating.

What the new system means for travelers

Seat types and selection timing

Southwest describes three seat categories: Extra Legroom, Preferred, and Standard. When passengers can choose a seat, when they receive an assignment, and what boarding benefits apply depend on the fare, seat category, loyalty status, eligible card benefits, and availability. The airline’s fare comparison places Basic in Standard seating with assignment at check-in, subject to exceptions for certain Rapid Rewards cardmembers and tier-status members. Higher fare bundles and qualifying benefits can provide earlier seat selection, access to seat categories, or earlier boarding.

Extra Legroom availability and the precise legroom difference vary by aircraft. Seat inventory and dimensions should not be assumed to be identical across routes or planes. Check the options shown for your specific itinerary before paying for a seat or choosing a fare.

Family seating, especially on Basic

Southwest says it attempts to seat families together, but adjacent seats are not guaranteed on Basic. The airline encourages Basic-fare families to check in 24 hours before departure to review seats and obtain a boarding pass. It also advises families who want a better chance of sitting together to choose a fare that permits seat selection at booking or buy seats at booking. If a child age 12 or younger is not seated beside an accompanying passenger age 13 or older on the reservation, Southwest says to ask a gate agent or flight attendant for help. See the airline’s Family Seating Policy.

Changes to a paid seat

Southwest publishes specific exchange or refund treatment for certain seat changes and downgrades, including situations in which the value of a paid seat is applied to a replacement seat. The remedy depends on the circumstances; it is not a universal refund rule for every schedule change or customer-initiated change. Review the terms that apply to your purchase in the airline’s Assigned Seats Refund and Exchange Policy.
