“Not Selected by Employer” on Indeed: What It Means for Your Application

On Indeed, "Not selected by employer" means the employer rejected your application for that job. It does not explain why, and it differs from the Indeed-set "Response seems unlikely" status.

On Indeed, “Not selected by employer” means the employer rejected your application for that specific job. Indeed’s own definition stops there. It does not say why the employer made the decision, and it does not say whether a person or an automated filter reviewed your application.

What the status means

Indeed’s Help Center article “My Jobs: Managing Applied Jobs” lists “Not selected by employer” among the statuses that the employer updates. The Help Center defines it in one line: “The employer rejected your application.” The status applies to the single application it appears against. It is not a verdict on your candidacy for other openings, and it does not carry over to other employers.

Where you will and will not see it

Indeed says employer-updated and Indeed-updated statuses are usually available only for jobs posted directly on Indeed. If you applied through an employer’s own website or another job board, the status may not appear in your Indeed applied-jobs list at all. A missing status therefore does not mean the application is still active. For those applications, the employer’s site or any email from the employer is the place to check.

How it differs from “Response seems unlikely”

Readers often confuse this status with “Response seems unlikely.” The two are set by different parties and say different things.

Feature “Not selected by employer” “Response seems unlikely”
Who sets it The employer Indeed
What it asserts The employer rejected this application Per Indeed’s Help Center, it can appear when the employer has hired enough candidates, or when there has been no activity on the application for at least two weeks
Is a rejection stated? Yes No; it describes the likelihood of a response

The practical difference matters. “Response seems unlikely” can be a signal about timing or hiring volume, while “Not selected by employer” is a decision on that application.

What the label does not tell you

  • The reason. The definition confirms rejection but gives no cause. Attributing it to a resume keyword filter, a missing qualification, or anything else requires separate evidence that the Help Center does not provide.
  • Whether a person reviewed it. Indeed’s definition does not address the review process.
  • A general pattern. One rejected application says nothing about your other applications, and the status does not describe outcomes at other employers.

What to do next

Indeed’s help page does not describe an appeal or feedback process, so there is no official step to follow. Treat the status as a closed result for that job and move your search forward. If you want more information, the contact details the employer provided on the posting or in earlier correspondence are the only route the page points toward. This is general practical advice, not a procedure Indeed prescribes. Keep your expectations realistic, since employers are not obliged to explain individual decisions, and a short, polite request for feedback may or may not get a reply.

When you review your applied jobs, keep a simple record of each role, the date you applied, the platform you used, and the status shown. That makes it easier to tell which statuses were set by the employer and which were set by Indeed, and which applications may not show a status on Indeed at all.

This article relies on Indeed Help Center, “My Jobs: Managing Applied Jobs,” which defines the application statuses and identifies which are employer-updated and which are Indeed-updated. The page does not carry a publication date in the version reviewed, so the status definitions may change; check the live page if a status you see does not match the descriptions here.
