However, the latest available results indicate that the impact declined in the quarter ended June 30, 2026.
The practical risk is another price increase, fewer discounts, or higher dealer pricing. It is not an automatic 25% increase on every Subaru.
What is happening to Subaru prices?
Subaru’s U.S. prices already moved higher during 2025. In May of that year, Subaru of America announced increases on several models, describing them as a response to “current market conditions” rather than calling them a tariff surcharge. Contemporary reports put the increases at approximately $750 to $2,055, depending on the model and trim.
That distinction matters. Automakers do not necessarily pass a tariff through as a separate line item. They can respond by:

- reducing cash incentives or dealer support;
- increasing prices only on certain trims;
- changing equipment or model availability;
- absorbing part of the cost through lower profit margins; or
- asking dealers to charge more for limited inventory.
So a tariff can affect what you pay without appearing on your buyer’s order as “tariff: $X.”
The tariff rate is not simply 25% anymore
The United States initially imposed an additional 25% Section 232 tariff on imported automobiles and automobile parts, including products from Japan. That is the source of many headlines saying Japanese-built vehicles face a 25% tariff.
But the U.S.–Japan agreement implemented in September 2025 changed the treatment of covered Japanese automobiles and parts. For products with a normal Column 1 duty below 15%, the combined U.S. duty was set at 15%, retroactive for qualifying products entered on or after August 7, 2025.
As a result, a current article that describes every Japanese-built Subaru as facing a blanket 25% tariff is generally using an outdated rate—or failing to distinguish between tariff categories. The exact duty depends on the product and its classification.
Even that 15% import duty does not translate into a 15% retail-price increase. The duty applies in the import chain. The final price also reflects exchange rates, shipping, labor, materials, financing conditions, incentives, dealer margins, and demand.
Which Subarus are exposed?
Subaru builds vehicles in Japan and in the United States. Its only North American plant, Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana, produces roughly half of the Subarus sold in North America. The Indiana facility assembles the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester, including the Forester Hybrid.
Buying a U.S.-assembled model does not make you completely immune to tariff-related costs. The factory may use imported engines, electronics, steel, aluminum, and other parts. Subaru has reported that U.S. tariff policies affected both finished vehicles imported from Japan and parts imported by its U.S. production facilities.

Current 2026 Subaru starting prices
Subaru’s advertised 2026 starting MSRPs are:
| Model | Starting MSRP |
|---|---|
| Impreza | $26,595 |
| Crosstrek | $26,995 |
| Forester | $29,995 |
| WRX | $32,495 |
| Outback | $34,995 |
| Uncharted | $34,995 |
| BRZ | $35,860 |
| Solterra | $38,495 |
| Trailseeker | $39,995 |
| Ascent | $40,795 |
These are starting prices, not out-the-door prices. The final amount may include destination charges, sales tax, registration, documentation fees, dealer-installed accessories, financing costs, and other dealer charges. A vehicle with a higher MSRP can also cost less than another model at the dealership if it has a larger discount.
Why Subaru could raise prices again
Subaru’s latest financial results show that tariffs remain a cost issue even though their impact declined. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Subaru reported:
| Measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Revenue | ¥1,250.9 billion, up 3.0% year over year |
| Operating profit | ¥42.6 billion, down 44.3% year over year |
| Tariff impact | Lower than in the previous period, but still a drag on operating profit |
| Other pressures | Higher sales incentives, raw-material costs, and unfavorable market conditions |
Subaru’s full-year FYE2027 forecast, announced August 5, 2026, projects operating profit of ¥150 billion, compared with ¥40.1 billion in FYE2026. The company expects help from foreign exchange, product mix, production flexibility, and cost controls. That forecast does not mean tariff pressure has disappeared. It means Subaru expects to manage a combination of costs and revenue factors.
If tariffs, materials, or incentives continue to pressure margins, Subaru has several options. Raising MSRP is one. Reducing discounts is another, and it can be harder for shoppers to notice because the sticker price does not change. A buyer who previously received $2,000 off may effectively pay $2,000 more even if the published MSRP stays the same.

Do not budget using the tariff percentage
A 15% or 25% tariff is not a reliable way to estimate your personal price increase. The tariff may apply to only part of the vehicle’s value, and Subaru may absorb some of it. Conversely, a dealer may charge more because inventory is tight even when the tariff itself accounts for only part of the increase.
Instead, compare the complete written price:
- Ask for the vehicle’s MSRP and destination charge.
- Request every dealer fee and add-on in writing.
- Subtract the dealer discount and manufacturer incentives.
- Add taxes, registration, financing charges, and any accessories you actually want.
- Compare the resulting out-the-door price with offers from other dealers.
Ask whether the price is locked
If you order a vehicle or leave a deposit, ask the dealer what happens if Subaru changes the MSRP before delivery. An existing vehicle is not automatically protected from a future price change merely because it was built before a tariff change. Protection depends on the dealer’s written policy, Subaru’s pricing rules, inventory status, and the terms of your purchase agreement.

Watch the discount, not just the sticker
Manufacturers sometimes preserve a familiar MSRP while cutting incentives. For example, a $1,000 reduction in available discounts has the same effect on your purchase price as a $1,000 price increase. Check Subaru’s current offers and compare multiple dealers rather than relying only on the window sticker.
There is no automatic Subaru tariff fee
A dealer cannot treat a tariff as a government-required customer charge without identifying the actual price or fee being added. Tariffs are collected within the import and supply chain. The dealer’s buyer’s order should show the price, fees, accessories, and other charges that make up your transaction.
If a salesperson describes a charge as mandatory, ask:
- What is the exact name of the charge?
- Is it included in the vehicle’s MSRP or added by the dealer?
- Is it negotiable?
- Does it appear on the manufacturer’s official pricing information?
- Can you remove it if you do not want the related product or service?
A dealer may set its own selling price, subject to applicable laws and disclosure requirements. That is different from claiming that the federal government requires you to pay a separate Subaru tariff fee.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy now or wait?
Waiting could help if Subaru introduces incentives, inventory builds, or dealers become more competitive. It could hurt if MSRP rises, discounts shrink, or the model and trim you want becomes scarce. There is no reliable way to predict which effect will dominate.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBuying sooner may make sense if:
- you have found a specific vehicle at a competitive out-the-door price;
- the dealer will document the price and any protection before you order;
- your financing rate or current vehicle’s trade-in value is favorable; or
- the payment fits your budget without relying on a future refinance.
Waiting may make sense if you have flexibility on model, color, trim, or timing and can keep saving for a larger down payment. Do not rush into a purchase solely because of a headline about a 25% tariff. The actual effect on a particular Subaru could be much smaller—or could show up as a lost discount rather than a large MSRP change.

FAQ
Will my next Subaru have a 25% tariff added to its price?
Not necessarily. The earlier additional 25% tariff rate was modified for covered Japanese automobiles and parts under the U.S.–Japan agreement. The combined duty for qualifying products with a normal Column 1 duty below 15% was set at 15% for applicable entries from August 7, 2025. That duty still does not equal a 25% retail-price increase.
Are U.S.-built Subarus exempt from tariffs?
No. U.S. assembly can avoid a tariff on an imported finished vehicle, but Subaru’s Indiana plant may use imported engines, parts, steel, aluminum, and other materials. Subaru has said tariff policies affected both Japanese-built vehicles and parts imported for U.S. production.
Can a Subaru dealer charge me a separate tariff fee?
A tariff is not an automatic customer fee. A dealer may set a selling price or add disclosed dealer charges, but the buyer’s order should identify exactly what you are paying. Ask whether a purported tariff charge is a dealer markup, a manufacturer price, or a fee for a specific product or service.
How can I protect myself from a Subaru price increase after ordering?
Ask the dealer for written price protection covering MSRP changes before delivery, including changes caused by tariffs. Also get the deposit terms, estimated delivery price, dealer fees, and any conditions in writing. Protection is not automatic merely because you placed an order or the vehicle was built before a policy change.
The Bottom Line
Tariffs are one reason your next Subaru could cost more, but the available evidence does not support saying that every Subaru will receive a specific tariff surcharge or a full tariff-sized price increase. Subaru already raised prices during the 2025 tariff shock, and tariffs continued to affect results in 2026 even after their impact declined.
For buyers, the useful number is the out-the-door price: MSRP, destination, dealer fees, accessories, taxes, financing, discounts, and incentives. Compare that number across dealers, and get any promised price protection in writing.
