What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Yes—but not in the way the headline suggests. Windows users can use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint without paying for a Microsoft 365 subscription, but the reliably available free versions run in a web browser. They are not the fully featured, permanently licensed desktop applications installed on your PC.
For most occasional tasks—writing a letter, opening a spreadsheet, or preparing a presentation—the free web apps may be enough. The important financial distinction is that Microsoft’s free option is tied to a Microsoft account and OneDrive, while the installable Windows desktop apps generally require a qualifying subscription or separate license.
How to use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint free on Windows
- Open Microsoft365.com in a browser.
- Select Sign in.
- Log in with a Microsoft account. If you do not have one, choose Sign up for free and create an account.
- Open the app launcher on the Microsoft 365 home page.
- Select Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
Microsoft also provides direct buttons such as Go to Word, Go to Excel, and Go to PowerPoint on its free Office webpage. In either case, the apps open online rather than as unrestricted desktop software.
What you get for free
| Free feature | What it means |
|---|---|
| Word, Excel, and PowerPoint | Browser-based versions are available at no subscription cost. |
| Microsoft account | Required to access the apps and save work online. |
| OneDrive storage | A free account includes 5 GB of online storage. |
| Collaboration | You can work with other people in real time on supported files. |
| Cross-device access | You can use the web apps from supported computers, tablets, and phones with a browser. |
The free apps are useful for basic documents, budgets, calculations, schoolwork, simple presentations, and shared projects. Changes are saved online, which also means you can continue working from another device without emailing files back and forth.

The catch: files must use OneDrive
Microsoft says files created with the free web apps must be saved in and shared from OneDrive. That is a meaningful limitation if you prefer to keep everything only on your computer.
A free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage. That may be plenty for text documents and ordinary spreadsheets, but large presentations, image-heavy files, and multiple backups can consume it quickly. If you exceed the allowance, you may need to delete files, move them elsewhere, or pay for additional Microsoft storage through a Microsoft 365 plan.
Before relying on the free tier for important financial records, check where the file is saved and keep a separate backup of tax documents, invoices, or household budgets. Cloud access is convenient, but it should not be your only copy of records that would be difficult to replace.
Free web apps versus paid desktop Office
| Free Microsoft 365 web apps | Paid Microsoft 365 or Office license | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the apps run | In a web browser | Installable desktop applications, usually also with web access |
| Word, Excel, PowerPoint | Yes, web versions | Yes, broader desktop versions |
| Microsoft account | Required | Typically required for activation and account management |
| Offline use | Limited compared with desktop software | Designed for regular offline desktop use, subject to license and activation rules |
| Storage | 5 GB of OneDrive storage on the free tier | Storage and features depend on the plan or license |
| Advanced features | More limited | More extensive desktop feature set |
The web versions do not grant a license to the full Windows desktop versions. Microsoft’s comparison information separates the free web apps from Microsoft 365 Personal and Family, which include installable applications for PC and Mac.

What happens if you click “Download for Windows”?
Microsoft’s download page can make the distinction confusing. The download itself may not cost anything, but downloading the Microsoft 365 desktop package does not make the installed applications permanently free. Activation still requires a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription, Office license, or other eligible entitlement.
If you only need free access, use Microsoft365.com rather than assuming that the Windows download page provides free desktop Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
What about the reported free desktop test?
In 2025, Microsoft reportedly tested ad-supported Windows desktop versions with reduced features for some users. The test involved opening an Office app, selecting Skip now, then choosing Continue for free. It reportedly required saving files to OneDrive and showed persistent or periodic advertising.
The test also left out features. Reported restrictions included items such as Dictate, WordArt, and some design tools in Word; add-ins and PivotTables in Excel; and add-ins, Dictate, Screenshot, and SmartArt in PowerPoint.

- 💻✔️ Work FASTER and SMARTER - Quick tips at your fingertips! This tool makes it easy to learn how to use your computer much faster and makes your workflow increase exponentially. It’s perfect for any age or skill level, students or seniors, at home, or in the office.
- 💻 ✔️ New adhesive – stronger hold. It may leave a light residue when removed, but this wipes off easily with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water. Fewer air bubbles – for the smoothest finish, don’t peel off the entire backing at once. Instead, fold back a small section, line it up, and press gradually as you peel more. The “peel-and-stick-all-at-once” method only works for thin decals, not for stickers like ours.
- 💻 ✔️ Compatible and fits any brand laptop or desktop running Windows 10 or 11 Operating System.

Those instructions describe a limited test, not a generally available product. Microsoft subsequently told PCWorld that it had no plans to launch a free, ad-supported version of the desktop Office applications. If those dialogs do not appear on your computer, that is expected; they were reportedly limited by region or test group and should not be treated as a current method.
Do not count on the old Windows mobile apps
Older advice sometimes recommends Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, or PowerPoint Mobile as free Windows alternatives. That advice is outdated. Microsoft removed those Universal Windows Platform apps from the Microsoft Store and ended their support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft now points users toward the web apps or a Microsoft 365 plan.
When the free option makes financial sense
- Use the web apps if you only occasionally edit documents, need basic spreadsheet functions, or are trying to avoid another recurring subscription.
- Consider a paid plan if you need desktop software, reliable offline work, advanced Excel tools, substantial OneDrive capacity, or frequent use across multiple devices.
- Compare the total cost before subscribing. Include the recurring subscription, any extra cloud-storage needs, and whether everyone in your household actually needs the desktop applications.
- Check existing access through an employer, school, library, or organization before buying. An eligible account may already provide Microsoft 365 access, though the available features and ownership rules vary.
Do not enter payment details merely because a Windows installation asks you to activate Office. If your goal is no-cost access, close the desktop activation prompt and use the browser-based apps at Microsoft365.com.

Can I use the free versions without installing anything?
Yes. Go to Microsoft365.com, sign in, open the app launcher, and choose Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. The apps run in your browser.
Can I save free Office files directly to my computer?
Microsoft says files in the free web-app tier must be saved in and shared from OneDrive. You may be able to download a copy for other uses, but the free service is built around OneDrive storage and sharing.
Why do I not see “Continue for free” in desktop Word?
That option was associated with a limited 2025 test of ad-supported desktop Office. It was not a permanent public release, and Microsoft said it had no plans to launch the version generally. Use the web apps or a licensed desktop version instead.
The Bottom Line
The dependable free route is Microsoft365.com → Sign in → app launcher → Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. You get usable browser versions, real-time collaboration, and 5 GB of OneDrive storage without paying for a subscription. You do not get a free license to the full Windows desktop applications. Treat reports about ad-supported desktop Office as a limited 2025 test, not as the current Microsoft offering.
