Harley-Davidson’s headline revenue collapse was real—but narrower than the 60% figure suggests. Harley-Davidson Motor Company (HDMC), the motorcycle manufacturing division, reported fourth-quarter 2024 motorcycle revenue of $231 million, down from $583 million a year earlier. That was a 60% decline.
The company’s total revenue fell by 35% in the quarter, while its full-year revenue declined 11%. Losses also widened sharply, and both revenue and earnings missed analyst expectations. The main immediate cause was a deliberate reduction in motorcycle shipments as Harley and its dealers worked to reduce excess inventory.
What the 60% revenue decline actually measures
The 60% drop applies to HDMC’s motorcycle revenue in the fourth quarter of 2024. It does not describe Harley-Davidson, Inc.’s total quarterly revenue.
| Measure | Q4 2023 | Q4 2024 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMC motorcycle revenue | $583 million | $231 million | Down 60% |
| HDMC total revenue | $792 million | $420 million | Down 47% |
| Consolidated Harley-Davidson revenue | $1.053 billion | $688 million | Down 35% |
| Full-year consolidated revenue | $5.836 billion | $5.187 billion | Down 11% |
HDMC is only one part of the wider company. Harley-Davidson also reports Harley-Davidson Financial Services (HDFS), which provides motorcycle financing, and LiveWire, its electric-motorcycle business. That is why the company-wide decline was smaller than the fall in the motorcycle division’s quarterly revenue.

Losses widened substantially
Harley-Davidson reported a consolidated operating loss of $193 million for Q4 2024, compared with a $21 million operating loss in Q4 2023. Its net loss attributable to Harley-Davidson was $117 million, or $0.93 per diluted share. The same quarter a year earlier produced net income of $26 million, or $0.18 per share.
The motorcycle division itself recorded a $214 million operating loss, compared with a $44 million loss in Q4 2023. Harley cited four main pressures:
- Lower motorcycle shipment volumes
- An unfavorable product mix
- Negative operating leverage as fixed costs were spread across fewer motorcycles
- Adverse foreign-exchange effects
Negative operating leverage is particularly important for investors. A manufacturer can reduce some variable costs when it sells fewer units, but factories, staff, distribution networks and other overheads do not fall at the same speed. A sharp volume decline can therefore produce a disproportionately large loss.
The results missed expectations
The results were also weaker than market expectations. A market-data summary citing LSEG reported HDMC revenue of approximately $420.49 million against an analyst estimate of $464.88 million. Reported loss per share was $0.93, compared with an expected loss of $0.66.

Those consensus figures were analysts’ expectations, not Harley-Davidson’s own forecast. The comparison nevertheless helps explain why the results were described as worse than expected: the company missed on both revenue and adjusted market expectations for earnings per share.
Shipments fell more than retail sales
One of the most important details is the difference between shipments and retail sales.
| Q4 2024 measure | Result | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Motorcycles shipped by HDMC | 14,010 | Down 53% |
| Motorcycles sold to retail customers worldwide | 25,700 | Down 15% |
Shipments are motorcycles sent by Harley-Davidson to its dealer network. Retail sales are motorcycles sold by dealers to customers. The much larger fall in shipments indicates that Harley was deliberately limiting deliveries while dealers worked through inventory.
That strategy can reduce dealer stock and protect pricing over time, but it hurts the manufacturer’s short-term revenue. It also does not necessarily mean that consumer demand fell by 53%. Retail demand was weaker, but the 15% decline was materially smaller than the shipment decline.

Regional sales were weak across the business
Global retail sales fell 15% in the fourth quarter. The regional figures were:
| Region | Q4 retail-sales change |
|---|---|
| North America | Down 13% |
| Europe, Middle East and Africa | Down 7% |
| Asia-Pacific | Down 26% |
| Latin America | Down 7% |
For the full year, global retail sales declined 7%, while HDMC shipments fell 17% to 148,862 motorcycles. The gap again suggests that dealer inventory management was a significant part of the annual shipment decline.
Why Harley-Davidson said sales weakened
Management pointed to cyclical pressure on discretionary purchases, high interest rates and weaker consumer confidence. A large motorcycle is not an essential household purchase, and higher borrowing costs can make both motorcycle loans and other consumer debt less attractive.
Higher rates can affect Harley in two ways. They may reduce demand from customers who finance a purchase, and they can pressure HDFS, the company’s financing arm, by increasing funding costs and raising credit risks. The company’s results therefore need to be viewed as more than a simple motorcycle-sales story.

Dealer inventory was another central issue. Sending fewer motorcycles to dealers can be a sensible corrective action when inventory is too high, but it creates a difficult financial period for the manufacturer. Investors should watch whether inventory normalizes without requiring heavy discounting, and whether retail sales stabilize after the channel has been cleared.
What Harley guided for 2025
At the time of the 2024 results, Harley-Davidson forecast the following for 2025:
| Business area | 2025 outlook |
|---|---|
| HDMC revenue | Flat to down 5% |
| HDMC operating margin | 7% to 8% |
| HDFS operating income | Down 10% to 15% |
| LiveWire motorcycle sales | 1,000 to 1,500 |
| LiveWire operating loss | $70 million to $80 million |
The guidance suggested management expected the motorcycle business to stabilize rather than repeat a 60% quarterly revenue decline. However, a 7% to 8% operating margin would still represent a business under pressure compared with the profitability investors would want from a premium motorcycle manufacturer.

No. The 60% decline describes Q4 2024 and should not be presented as the company’s current performance.

Harley-Davidson’s latest results available as of August 9, 2026 were for Q2 2026. Consolidated revenue was $1.230 billion, down 6% year over year, but HDMC revenue increased 6% to $1.104 billion. HDMC operating income rose 18% to $72 million, while global motorcycle shipments increased 9% to 39,209. North American retail sales rose 3%.
The company raised its full-year 2026 HDMC operating-income guidance to between $10 million and $50 million, from an earlier range of a $40 million loss to a $10 million profit. That is a materially different picture from the fourth quarter of 2024, although consolidated net income still fell 26% year over year in Q2 2026, partly because of the continuing restructuring of HDFS.
What investors should watch next
- Retail sales versus shipments: Retail demand shows whether customers are returning; shipments show how aggressively Harley is replenishing dealers.
- Dealer inventory: Inventory that remains too high could lead to promotions, lower margins and further shipment reductions.
- HDMC operating margin: Revenue recovery will matter less if fixed costs and discounting prevent profits from returning.
- HDFS performance: Rising delinquencies, credit losses or funding costs could offset improvement in motorcycle operations.
- LiveWire losses: Electric motorcycles remain a small but loss-making part of the group and require continued investment.
- Interest rates and consumer confidence: These factors influence whether buyers can and will finance discretionary purchases.
FAQ
Did Harley-Davidson’s total revenue fall 60%?
No. The 60% decline refers to HDMC motorcycle revenue in Q4 2024, which fell from $583 million to $231 million. Consolidated Harley-Davidson revenue fell 35% in that quarter, from $1.053 billion to $688 million.
How large was Harley-Davidson’s Q4 2024 loss?
Harley-Davidson reported a consolidated net loss attributable to the company of $117 million, or $0.93 per diluted share. Its consolidated operating loss was $193 million.
Why did Harley-Davidson ship fewer motorcycles than it sold?
The company reduced shipments to its dealer network to help lower dealer inventory. HDMC shipped 14,010 motorcycles in Q4 2024, down 53%, while worldwide retail sales fell 15% to 25,700.
Is Harley-Davidson still experiencing a 60% revenue decline?
No. That figure relates specifically to Q4 2024. In Q2 2026, the latest results available as of August 9, 2026, HDMC revenue rose 6% year over year to $1.104 billion.
The Bottom Line
Harley-Davidson’s Q4 2024 results were severe, but the headline needs precision: motorcycle revenue at HDMC fell 60%, not total company revenue. The quarter’s $117 million net loss reflected weak discretionary demand, high interest rates, dealer destocking, unfavorable mix and the cost of operating with much lower shipment volumes. The later Q2 2026 figures show that the motorcycle division had recovered from that particular slump, although financing-related restructuring remained a drag on the wider company.
