Yor Labs’ $3.3 Million Raise: From AI Handheld Ultrasound to FDA-Cleared Cardiac Imaging

Yor Labs was reported to have raised $3.3 million in 2019 for AI-assisted handheld ultrasound. Its later XC11 intracardiac system received FDA 510(k) clearance in 2025.

In November 2019, Portland startup Yor Labs was reported to have raised $3.3 million to develop a portable, wireless ultrasound system assisted by artificial intelligence. The figure came from a regulatory filing, not a company financing announcement, and Yor Labs declined to comment. The company later emerged with a more specialized product: an intracardiac imaging system that received FDA 510(k) clearance in October 2025.

What Yor Labs raised in 2019—and what the filing did not establish

GeekWire reported on November 21, 2019, that Yor Labs had raised $3.3 million, citing a regulatory filing. The Portland, Oregon, startup planned to use the money to develop a lightweight, portable ultrasound system with AI. Yor Labs declined to comment at the time. GeekWire’s 2019 report did not establish whether the amount was a completed financing round, a partial close, or the total offering.

The report also did not disclose the security type, valuation, close date, investor list, or other financing terms. A filing-based amount is useful evidence that the company reported fundraising activity, but it is not enough to reconstruct the deal or assess investor returns.

What the original ultrasound concept was supposed to do

The 2019 description was of a handheld, lightweight, portable and wireless ultrasound platform. Yor Labs said AI would make images easier to interpret and diagnosis easier. Those were development goals, not demonstrated clinical outcomes.

The coverage did not provide technical specifications such as probe frequency, imaging modes, battery life, wireless protocol, display requirements, cloud architecture, AI model, training data, clinical indication, intended user, regulatory pathway, or launch date. It therefore described a product vision, not a finished device available for clinicians to buy.

Why AI could matter in ultrasound

Ultrasound can be brought to the bedside, but acquiring a useful image and interpreting it depend on operator skill. In principle, software could guide probe positioning, recognize standard views, check image quality, take measurements, flag possible abnormalities, or streamline workflow. The 2019 report did not say which, if any, of these capabilities Yor Labs was building.

AI assistance would not by itself remove the need for training, appropriate patient selection, image-quality safeguards, clinical validation across settings and populations, regulatory authorization, and clinician review. A tool that helps acquire an image is also not necessarily a tool authorized to diagnose from it.

The people and competitive context reported in 2019

GeekWire described Yor Labs as founded about four years earlier—implying approximately 2015—and reported 16 employees based on LinkedIn at the time. These are historical details, not a current company headcount. The report named:

The 2019 article identified Fujifilm SonoSite as an established ultrasound competitor and reported its collaboration with the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence on AI interpretation of ultrasound images. The landscape includes different categories: bedside point-of-care scanners, portable cart-based systems, software that adds capabilities to conventional ultrasound, and catheter-based intracardiac ultrasound. They are not automatically substitutes for one another.

What happened after the fundraising report

Later records show YorLabs pursuing a more specialized intracardiac imaging product for electrophysiology and interventional cardiology. An FDA-derived device record identifies the XC11 ICE System, submission K250955, as a Class II device with a 510(k) decision date of October 22, 2025. Its stated use is intracardiac and intraluminal ultrasound imaging, including imaging guidance during cardiac percutaneous procedures, with the specified catheter and system handle. The device record does not establish that this system is the same product as the general handheld AI concept described in 2019.

On October 24, 2025, YorLabs announced the clearance and described the platform as compact, wireless, and “zero-capex.” Those are company characterizations. “Zero-capex” describes a proposed purchasing model, not a device that necessarily costs nothing: procedure charges, disposables, service, software, training, integration, and contract terms can all affect total cost. Public information cited here is insufficient to calculate that cost. The company announcement was distributed by BioSpace.

Secondary and company-related coverage later reported that YorLabs completed its first clinical procedure with the cleared system. That milestone does not, by itself, show broad adoption, clinical superiority, cost savings, or financial success. CB Insights’ company page is among the sources reporting the later timeline.

What FDA 510(k) clearance means here

The 2025 milestone is FDA 510(k) clearance, not approval through the premarket approval pathway. It applies to the device configuration and intended use described in its clearance record; it does not authorize every possible use of ultrasound or prove that every clinical or economic claim is established.

Most importantly, clearance of the XC11 ICE System does not establish that the 2019 AI-powered handheld concept itself was cleared, or that the later system contains the same AI features. The original product vision and the later intracardiac system should be treated as separate points in the company’s timeline unless YorLabs provides documentation connecting them.

What remains unknown to investors and potential customers

  • The precise terms, investors, and structure of the 2019 $3.3 million financing.
  • The detailed specifications and AI functionality of the 2019 handheld concept.
  • Clinical study results establishing diagnostic performance or superiority.
  • Current pricing, contract economics, customer count, revenue, and commercial availability.
  • The extent to which the 2025 intracardiac system evolved from the original handheld project.

These gaps matter because regulatory clearance, clinical evidence, market adoption, and financial performance are different milestones. The available sources establish the filing-based funding report and a later clearance, but not the investment outcome or commercial traction.
