For a new production yacht from a particular brand, a dealer is usually the most direct route. For a used yacht—or a search across brands—a broker may be better placed to compare vessels, help assess value, negotiate and coordinate the transaction. Those are practical tendencies, not universal legal definitions: brokers may also handle new builds, and local rules and contracts determine the details.
What is the difference between a yacht broker and a yacht dealer?
A yacht broker generally acts as an intermediary in a sale or purchase, helping a buyer or seller with the transaction. Brokerage work often centers on used yachts, but a broker can also be involved in a new-build project. A dealer commonly sells yachts for particular manufacturers and is often the usual route to order a new production yacht.
The distinction is not simply “used versus new.” A dealer’s brand access and manufacturer relationship may help with model selection, configuration and delivery. A broker may offer a broader view across vessels and assist with valuation, marketing, negotiation and transaction coordination. What either professional actually does—and whom they represent—depends on the engagement and applicable local rules.
When should you use a yacht dealer?
You want a new production yacht or a specific brand
If you have a manufacturer or model in mind, contact a dealer that carries it. A dealer may liaise with the manufacturer about available options and configuration, and help coordinate delivery. Confirm that the dealer is authorized for the brand and location relevant to your purchase; access and authorization can vary.

You want dealer support after the sale
Some dealers may assist with repairs, upgrades, replacements or warranty matters, but the scope is not uniform. Before signing, ask what delivery and post-sale support are included, which party handles warranty issues, and what commitments will be written into the contract.
When should you use a yacht broker?
You are buying or selling a used yacht
A broker can help a buyer compare vessels and can help a seller value, list and market a yacht. A broker may also negotiate and coordinate a sea trial, inspection, financing, paperwork and closing. These are potential services, not a guaranteed package: ask which tasks are included and which require separate providers.

You want help across brands or with the transaction
A broker may be useful when your search is not limited to one manufacturer, or when you want assistance managing several stages of a purchase or sale. Do not assume the broker performs the survey, title review or legal work. Ask who will arrange those services, and consider independent professional advice where appropriate.
You need clarity on representation and payment
Ask whether the broker represents you, the seller, or both, how the broker is paid, and whether a buyer or listing agreement applies. Get the fee or commission, included work, potential conflicts and termination terms in writing. The agreement and local law—not the job title alone—determine the specifics.

Questions to ask before you sign
- Is the yacht new production, used, or a new-build project?
- Which brands and models can you access, and are you authorized by the manufacturer in this location?
- Whom do you represent in this transaction? Are you representing another party as well?
- What work is included in your fee or commission, and what costs extra?
- Who will arrange an independent survey, sea trial, financing, insurance, title or registration work, and closing?
- If I am buying through a dealer, what exactly is included in delivery and post-sale support, and who handles warranty issues?
- What local licensing, registration, escrow or other requirements apply?
Check the rules where the transaction takes place
Broker and dealer labels do not have one uniform legal meaning across the United States. Definitions, licensing and exemptions can differ by state, so check the regulator’s current requirements for the place and type of transaction involved.
Florida
Florida Statutes Chapter 326 defines a broker by compensated activity for other people involving yacht sales, purchases, negotiations or listings. For that chapter, a yacht is a pleasure or pleasure-charter vessel over 32 feet. The statute also lists exemptions, including transactions involving the sale of a new yacht. These are Florida-specific rules, not a nationwide definition. See the Florida Statutes, Chapter 326. Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation explains state broker licensing, escrow and bond requirements and license verification in its Yacht and Ships FAQs; check the current official information rather than relying on an old administrative figure.

California
California DMV describes yacht and ship brokers as negotiating yacht purchases, sales or exchanges for compensation without owning the yachts, and identifies the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways as the broker licensing authority. It describes marine dealers by their business of buying, selling, offering or taking vessels in trade for resale; DMV says it does not license marine dealers and directs readers to other offices for retail-business licensing questions. Maryland
Maryland’s Boat Dealer Manual, revised March 2026, describes licensing for people in the business of buying, selling or exchanging vessels at an established place of business and includes certain yacht brokers in its statutory dealer definition.
