By December 2, Bloomberg Law reported XRP had moved into third place. The rank changed with the market and the timestamp; it is a historical snapshot, not a statement of XRP’s current position.
How XRP’s rank changed in early December 2024
The apparent jump from fourth to third place reflects reports published on consecutive days, not a contradiction. The Block reported on December 1, 2024, that XRP’s market capitalization was nearing $121 billion, putting it ahead of Solana at $112.2 billion and making XRP the fourth-largest cryptocurrency in that snapshot. The Block’s December 1 report captured that ranking.
On December 2, Bloomberg Law reported XRP had become the third-largest cryptocurrency, with a market capitalization above $154.6 billion. Bloomberg, citing CoinGecko data, said XRP’s capitalization had been below $30 billion on November 5 and that it had added more than $100 billion in value since the U.S. election. Bloomberg Law’s December 2 account describes the later snapshot.
Market-cap rankings are time-sensitive: they compare estimates of each asset’s price multiplied by its circulating supply. Prices and circulating-supply estimates can change, and providers may use different methods. A market-cap increase is not the same as that amount of cash flowing into the asset or being realized by holders.

How large was XRP’s Q4 2024 rally?
Ripple’s 2025 report on the fourth quarter of 2024 said XRP rose 280% during the quarter. The company also reported average daily spot trading volume of $5 billion from mid-November through December, and nearly $25 billion in spot volume on December 2 across CCData’s top-tier exchanges. Ripple says its market analysis draws on public sources, including CCData, Bloomberg, and Refinitiv Eikon; these figures should therefore be understood as company-reported measures, not as an independently defined universal volume series. Ripple’s Q4 2024 report provides its figures and methodology.
CoinGecko’s 2025 annual report offers a broader quarter-level comparison: XRP moved from seventh to fourth by market capitalization during Q4 2024, while its share of the crypto market reached 3.5%, an increase of 2.0 percentage points. That quarter-end summary need not match a specific intraday ranking reported earlier in the quarter. CoinGecko’s 2024 annual crypto report records the quarter-level rank and market-share change.

What was reported as driving the surge?
The available accounts point to several market conditions rather than proving a single cause. Ripple’s report emphasized exchange demand and optimism following the U.S. election. Bloomberg Law reported continued buying overseas, particularly in South Korea, and short liquidations on futures exchanges. These are reported explanations and market observations, not a causal study showing how much each factor contributed.
Short liquidations occur when exchanges close leveraged short positions, typically after prices rise against traders betting on a decline. Such activity can add buying pressure, but the cited accounts do not establish it as the sole or definitive cause of XRP’s rally.

Why the “fourth-largest now” headline is outdated
“Now” in the original headline referred to the December 1, 2024 report. XRP was reported in third place the following day, and neither December 2024 snapshot tells readers its live rank today. A later SEC-filed disclosure, citing CoinMarketCap, described XRP as the fifth-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization on December 31, 2025. That date-specific figure is another historical snapshot, not a current ranking. The SEC-filed disclosure identifies the later date and source.
For any present-day comparison, check a market-data provider’s current ranking and note its timestamp and methodology. The sequence established by the cited reports is: fourth on December 1, 2024, third as reported on December 2, 2024, and fifth on December 31, 2025 according to the later filing’s CoinMarketCap citation.
