That was a significant procedural win for Ripple, but it did not erase the court’s mixed ruling: institutional XRP sales were found to violate securities-registration requirements, and a $125,035,150 penalty and injunction remained in effect. The decision was not a blanket ruling that XRP can never be a security.
What happened in the Ripple-SEC case?
The SEC filed its civil action against Ripple and two executives on December 22, 2020. In July 2023, the district court issued a mixed ruling that distinguished sales to institutional buyers from other sale contexts. On August 7, 2024, the court entered a final judgment imposing a civil penalty and an injunction.
The case’s endpoint came a year later. On August 7, 2025, the SEC said a joint stipulation dismissed both its appeal and Ripple’s cross-appeal. The SEC also said the district court’s final judgment remained in effect. SEC notice of the appeal dismissal
Did Ripple win the SEC case?
Ripple won an important procedural outcome: the appeals ended, leaving the district court’s ruling in place rather than asking an appellate court to review it. But “victory” is incomplete if it suggests Ripple prevailed on every issue or that the judgment disappeared. The final judgment still included a $125,035,150 civil penalty and an injunction against future violations of Securities Act registration provisions. SEC notice of the appeal dismissal

Is XRP a security?
The court’s ruling was about how XRP was sold, not a universal declaration that the token itself is always—or never—a security. The SEC described the district court’s decision as finding Ripple’s institutional sales to be unregistered offers and sales of investment contracts, while other secondary offers and sales did not violate Section 5. Why did XRP surge?
The August 7, 2025 dismissal removed the remaining appellate dispute, a development traders could view as reducing legal uncertainty around Ripple and XRP. The Block reported that XRP rose about 7%, from about $3.04 to $3.27, after the news. Those are historical prices reported at the time, not a current quote or proof that the legal announcement alone caused the move; they say nothing reliable about future performance. Why the timeline matters
- March 19, 2025: Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said, “I am finally able to announce that this case has ended. - May 8, 2025: The SEC announced a proposed framework under which the parties would ask the court to dissolve the injunction and release escrowed penalty funds, with $50 million paid to the SEC and the balance returned to Ripple. It was a proposal, not the final result. How to interpret later regulatory statements
Ripple said that a March 2026 SEC-CFTC interpretation named XRP a digital commodity. That is Ripple’s account of a later regulatory development, separate from the court’s sale-specific judgment; the court case itself did not establish that characterization.
