That is an ambitious executive aspiration—not a formally published Xiaomi corporate forecast, a promise to sell 5 million pairs by December 2027, or a cumulative-sales target. The distinction matters for anyone judging the company’s prospects or considering an imported pair.
What Xiaomi’s 5-million figure actually means
Li Chuangqi, who leads Xiaomi’s AI-glasses project, described a goal of more than 5 million units in annual shipments “within three years,” according to the South China Morning Post’s July 2025 report and a contemporaneous AASTOCKS report. The comment was an executive’s ambition, not formal company guidance in an earnings release or investor document.

“By 2027” is therefore an imprecise shorthand. Three years from a July 2025 comment reaches into 2028, and the reported wording does not establish a specific calendar-year deadline. Nor does it describe 5 million total pairs sold since launch: it refers to annual shipments.
Shipments are not necessarily the same as retail sales. Units sent to retailers or distributors may not yet have been bought by consumers, and neither measure automatically tells us how many people continue using the glasses. The reporting does not establish Xiaomi’s accounting basis for the aspiration or a geographic scope.

What the early launch numbers show—and what they do not
Xiaomi introduced its first AI Glasses in China on June 26, 2025. The South China Morning Post reported that roughly 50,000 pairs had sold through Xiaomi’s online and physical retail channels after launch, with demand stronger than Li had expected. Reports also described early inventory shortages.
That is an encouraging launch signal, not proof of sustained mass-market demand. A launch-period figure cannot be treated as a full-year baseline or used to calculate a reliable growth rate. Other reports have circulated different early figures, including 80,000 units in 15 days, but they should not be blended with the approximately 50,000 figure without a clear accounting basis. The 5-million ambition is at least 100 times the reported early milestone, a comparison of scale rather than a forecast of year-over-year growth.
What Xiaomi’s AI Glasses are
The first-generation product is camera-and-audio eyewear with AI functions, not a full augmented-reality headset with a transparent display. Xiaomi’s product information lists a Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 platform, 12-megapixel camera, 2K video recording at up to 30 frames per second, and open-ear audio. It also describes voice-based AI, object recognition, translation, transcription and meeting summaries, smartphone-linked camera features, and control of some Xiaomi ecosystem devices. These functions and specifications are described in Xiaomi’s product material.
Xiaomi says battery life can reach up to 8.6 hours; actual use depends on configuration and what the wearer does, particularly camera and AI use. The product has USB-C charging, and higher-priced versions offer optional electrochromic lenses. “AI glasses” here means a wearable camera, open-ear audio device, voice-assistant terminal and smartphone companion—not a phone replacement or a Vision Pro-style spatial-computing device.

Why Xiaomi sees room to grow
Xiaomi can position the glasses alongside its phones, smart-home devices and other connected products. The company’s existing consumer-electronics presence and retail network could help introduce an unfamiliar category, while optical retailers may offer a path to customers who need prescription eyewear. Secondary reporting describes a broad Xiaomi-store and optical-shop rollout, but those distribution counts are not established in the official product material cited here.
The market argument also draws on the large number of people who wear corrective glasses. One report cites more than 700 million people with myopia in China and frames that population as a potential opportunity. That is an addressable-market argument, not evidence that those people want camera-enabled AI eyewear or will buy it at a particular price.
Market forecasts require care because “smart glasses,” “AI glasses” and “XR headwear” do not necessarily count the same products. A forecast cited by the South China Morning Post put global AI-glasses shipments at 5.1 million in 2025, with 158% year-over-year growth, but the forecast’s category definition matters. Separately, Omdia forecast 6.5 million XR-headwear units in 2027; that broader category is not interchangeable with AI glasses. These figures suggest a fast-moving market, but they do not independently validate Xiaomi’s target.
If Xiaomi reaches more than 5 million annual shipments, it will need both category growth and substantial scale of its own. The result will depend on whether consumers find everyday value in hands-free photography, audio and AI—and whether the product works as comfortable, practical eyewear.

What could make the goal achievable—or derail it
Distribution and product-market fit
Retail reach can put a product in front of buyers, but eyewear is personal: fit, weight, style and prescription-lens availability can matter as much as the camera specification. Xiaomi would need reliable lens fitting, multiple comfortable frame options, and workable repair and replacement services to move beyond early adopters.
Regional support and software
The first launch and the price reported by Xiaomi were for China. Outside that market, availability, local warranty, compatible phone support, language coverage, cloud services and regulatory approvals all need to be established. A product that depends on a particular assistant, app or account ecosystem may deliver a different experience by region.
Privacy, battery and operating costs
A camera worn on the face raises questions about recording in workplaces, schools, hospitals and private homes, including how clearly recording is signaled and how visual data is handled. Battery life under continuous recording may differ from Xiaomi’s maximum-use claim. If translation, transcription or visual recognition relies on cloud processing, ongoing compute and support costs also affect the economics; a positive hardware margin alone would not establish that the project is profitable overall.

Xiaomi is entering a category that includes Meta and Ray-Ban’s camera-and-audio glasses, as well as Chinese products from companies such as Huawei, Rokid and RayNeo. Shared use of a chip platform does not make devices equivalent. Software, eyewear fit, retail availability, privacy controls and regional support are meaningful differences, while broader AR and XR products should not be treated as direct substitutes without comparing what they do.

Price, availability and what buyers should check
Xiaomi’s product material gives a China starting price of RMB 1,999 and names Mi.com, Mi Home, the Xiaomi Auto app and other official channels. That is a China-market launch price, not a current U.S. retail price or an international MSRP. The reviewed information does not establish U.S. availability, local warranty coverage or full English-language feature parity.
Before importing or buying any unit, confirm the points that affect real ownership:
- Whether the AI functions and companion app support your country, language and phone.
- Whether a local optician can fit the required prescription lenses to this exact frame.
- Whether the seller provides a usable local warranty, returns and repair service.
- What camera use, cloud processing and data-retention terms apply in your region.
- Whether the glasses meet your needs without a display and remain comfortable for daily wear.
For a personal-finance decision, compare the total cost of a supported device—not just the sticker price—with the value of features you will actually use. An imported price advantage can disappear if the glasses lack local service, compatible lenses or required software support.

How credible is the 5-million ambition?
The goal is ambitious but not inherently impossible. Xiaomi has an established hardware ecosystem, reported strong initial interest in China, and a potential route through both electronics and eyewear retail. Those advantages make a serious push plausible.
The evidence does not establish that annual demand will reach the stated level. The figure comes from a project executive rather than formal corporate guidance; the time frame is not an exact 2027 deadline; launch-period sales do not prove recurring demand; and the market forecasts use categories that may not match Xiaomi’s product. The most accurate reading is that Xiaomi has shown enough early momentum to pursue the category, while the more-than-5-million figure remains an attributed aspiration rather than a verified forecast.
