That was a launch-day sales figure for the Chinese market, not audited profit, a confirmed shipment count, or a global revenue result.
What Xiaomi reported
The claim came from Cici, identified in contemporary coverage as a Xiaomi Civi product manager, who reportedly shared the result in a social-media post or promotional graphic. The report said the phone’s first sale exceeded RMB200 million within five minutes. The dollar headline was a media conversion of that renminbi figure, rather than a separate dollar-denominated announcement from Xiaomi.

The sale began in China on September 30, 2021. Available evidence does not establish that the original Civi generated the same amount in the United States, worldwide, or in a later promotion.

What “over $30 million” actually means
It is sales value, not profit
RMB200 million is a reported gross sales or transaction-value measure. It does not show Xiaomi’s profit, cash collected, recognized quarterly revenue, or net proceeds after retailer margins, taxes, discounts, logistics, returns, and other costs.
It is not a confirmed phone count
The reports provide a monetary total, not completed units. The entry model reportedly cost RMB2,599 for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Dividing RMB200 million by that starting price produces roughly 76,950 base-price-equivalent units, but that is only an illustration. The Civi had more expensive configurations, and the reported total may have included orders or gross merchandise value across several channels. Discounts, cancellations, refunds, bundles, and accounting treatment were not disclosed.
The exchange-rate wording matters
Contemporary coverage converted the amount to approximately US$31 million. The exact dollar equivalent depends on the exchange rate selected, so “roughly $30 million” is safer than treating $30 million or $31 million as a precise current conversion.
Where the sale happened
This was a domestic Chinese first sale. Reports described availability through multiple channels, but the available evidence does not give a verified split between Xiaomi’s own store, Chinese e-commerce platforms, physical stores, and other sellers. The original Civi’s China launch should not be presented as a worldwide launch milestone.
What the Xiaomi Civi was
The first Civi was an upper-midrange Android phone introduced in September 2021. Xiaomi positioned it around a slim, light design and selfie and portrait photography, particularly for younger users and women. That demographic language describes marketing strategy, not a technical category or evidence that women preferred the device.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the launch attracted attention
- The thin, approximately 166g body addressed buyers who prioritized portability.
- The 120Hz AMOLED display offered smoother scrolling than a conventional 60Hz panel.
- The Snapdragon 778G provided upper-midrange performance while keeping the phone below flagship positioning.
- The 32MP autofocus selfie camera, portrait processing, and selfie lighting were central to Xiaomi’s marketing.
- A 4,500mAh battery and 55W charging supported an all-day, fast-charging use case on paper.
There were also clear limits. The rear system included a modest 2MP macro camera, and Android 11 with MIUI 12.5 is obsolete by 2026 standards. Importers also need to check Chinese firmware, Google-services support, cellular bands, warranty terms, battery condition, and parts availability rather than assuming the 2021 launch specification reflects today’s ownership experience.
How strong was the performance?
More than RMB200 million in reported first-sale value was a notable opening for a new Xiaomi smartphone line and indicates strong initial demand in China. It does not, by itself, establish long-term popularity, profitability, market-share gains, sell-through after launch day, or success outside China. Early results can be concentrated by launch promotions, limited inventory, or pent-up demand.
Xiaomi later described the Civi series as well received in its corporate commentary, but that broad statement does not independently quantify the five-minute result. No independently audited unit total or financial disclosure confirming the exact amount is established by the cited sources.
Bottom line
The “over $30 million in five minutes” headline refers to Xiaomi’s reported first-sale performance for the original Civi in China on September 30, 2021. The underlying claim was more than RMB200 million in launch sales value, approximately $31 million at the conversion used in contemporary reports. It is best understood as a short-window launch snapshot—not verified profit, a global milestone, or proof of a specific number of phones delivered.
