Xbox’s public statements link its 2026 restructuring to weak financial performance, low margins and slower-than-expected growth. The company gave a separate, specific reason for raising console prices: higher storage and memory costs. The statements do not establish that one particular profit-margin target caused both the price increases and the layoffs.
Why did Xbox raise console prices?
Xbox announced worldwide console price changes on June 25, 2026, effective August 1. The increases vary by storage tier: US$100 for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models. Xbox also said it would sunset its 2 TB model. These are the company’s announced changes; the announcement does not provide a single new price applicable to every console, region, or purchase route. Xbox attributed the increases to rising component costs, especially storage and memory. The company said those prices had risen by more than 2.5 times and it expected them to double again by fall 2027. Those figures and projections are Xbox’s statements, not independently audited cost estimates. Xbox also said consoles are typically sold for less than they cost to make; that is its general explanation, not an independently verified claim about every console or manufacturer.
New and refurbished hardware
Xbox said certified refurbished consoles were available through Microsoft Stores for up to US$100 off MSRP. That is a stated maximum discount, not a guaranteed price or current offer; availability and pricing can vary by region and over time. Xbox describes Series S as its lowest-cost route into console gaming, but buyers should check the current regional listing before comparing it with other models.

How many Xbox employees were laid off?
Microsoft announced 4,800 job cuts overall on July 6, 2026, including 1,600 Xbox employees, according to the Associated Press. In an Xbox message that day, CEO Asha Sharma said a further 1,600 Xbox reductions were expected during the fiscal year. Those were separate figures: the first was the announced Xbox portion of Microsoft’s cuts; the second was Sharma’s stated expectation for additional Xbox reductions. On September 22, Xbox announced 268 further role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios and central functions. The company said changes completed since July, including studio divestitures, amounted to roughly three-quarters of the previously announced restructuring. That description does not provide a single consolidated final headcount for all restructuring actions. Xbox’s September 22 update

What did Xbox say about its financial performance?
In a June 10, 2026 internal message, Sharma said Xbox expected to end the fiscal year at about a 3% “accountability margin,” down year over year. She also cited more than US$20 billion in ongoing content, platform and hardware-subsidy investment over five years, excluding Activision Blizzard King, and a nearly US$500 million decline in annual revenue over that period. These figures are management’s statements; the message did not provide underlying accounting detail for the margin measure. Xbox’s June 10 message
In July, Sharma said margins were “3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses.” She also pointed to a weaker core business, slower-than-expected growth from Game Pass, multiplatform publishing and a broader content portfolio, studio-portfolio decisions, and organizational complexity. Xbox said platform teams were 40% larger than at the start of the console generation while player base and playtime had declined. These are the company’s explanations and comparisons; the message did not publish the underlying calculations. Xbox’s July reset message

Did one profit target cause both the price hikes and layoffs?
The public statements support a narrower conclusion than the claim that a particular profit target drove both decisions. Xbox connected restructuring with financial underperformance, margins below comparable businesses, slower growth from strategic bets and organizational design. For console prices, it cited higher storage and memory costs. The reviewed statements do not establish that Microsoft imposed a specific 30% Xbox margin target or that such a target directly caused either action.
It is therefore reasonable to describe profitability pressure as part of Xbox’s restructuring, but not to present one named margin target as the proven common cause of layoffs and price increases. The price increase has a distinct stated rationale, and the company’s disclosures do not show that it was a response to a particular profit threshold.
