Microsoft has not verified that Xbox Series X|S consoles have sold 30 million units, and it has not disclosed a profit figure for the consoles. Its latest fiscal-year filing says Xbox hardware revenue fell 25% in FY2025 because of lower console volume; that revenue decline does not reveal unit sales or whether hardware was profitable.
Has Xbox Series X|S sold 30 million consoles?
The figure is not established by the official Microsoft materials reviewed. Microsoft’s FY2025 Form 10-K reports a decline in Xbox hardware revenue but does not provide a combined worldwide lifetime sales total for Series X and Series S. The filing attributes the revenue decrease to lower console volume, not to a stated number of units sold. Microsoft FY2025 Form 10-K
That distinction matters: revenue can change because of both the number of consoles sold and the revenue recognized per console. A revenue decline cannot be converted into a unit count without additional data. Any claim that the pair reached 30 million should therefore be treated as an estimate unless it identifies its source, date, geographic coverage, whether it measures shipments or sell-through, and its method.
What Microsoft has disclosed about Xbox revenue
Microsoft’s published figures distinguish hardware from the broader Xbox business. The measures below cover different periods and do not disclose Series X|S unit sales or console-generation profit.

Did Microsoft make a profit on Series X|S hardware?
Microsoft has not published a Series X|S-specific profit or margin figure in the cited materials. Hardware revenue alone cannot answer the question: profit would require costs and other relevant expenses to be included, and Microsoft has not supplied that console-generation calculation here.
Xbox executive Phil Spencer described Xbox as a business expected to grow at the top and bottom line: “We’re accountable to Microsoft for running a good business, a healthy business that continues to grow at both top line and bottom line.” That is a broad description of business goals, not a quantified statement about console hardware earnings. How to read claims about Xbox profitability
- Check the scope: A Microsoft-wide earnings figure is not an Xbox figure, and an Xbox business comment is not a Series X|S hardware result.
- Separate revenue from profit: Revenue growth or decline says how sales changed, not what remained after costs.
- Keep hardware apart from services: The 13% quarterly increase in content and services revenue does not establish console demand, unit sales, or hardware margins.
- Check what a sales estimate counts: A useful estimate should be dated and explain its geography, whether it counts shipments or consumer purchases, and how it was calculated.
What the available figures mean for buyers
Microsoft’s product page lists Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, along with related accessories such as controllers, headsets, and storage. Those product listings describe what Microsoft offers, not how many consoles have sold or whether the hardware is profitable. Microsoft Xbox consoles
For a buyer, neither a 30-million sales claim nor an assumption about hardware profits is a reliable basis for evaluating the console. The official figures establish that Xbox hardware revenue declined amid lower console volume in FY2025 and that content and services revenue grew in the final quarter; they do not establish a lifetime unit total or console-specific profit.
