Microsoft reported Xbox hardware revenue down 33% year over year in FY2026 Q3, citing a lower volume of consoles sold. That figure measures revenue—not the percentage drop in consoles sold. Microsoft has not provided an exact unit-sales decline or a worldwide Xbox Series X|S unit total in the cited reporting.
What Microsoft reported about Xbox console sales
In FY2026 Q3, Microsoft said Xbox hardware revenue decreased 33% year over year because fewer consoles were sold. It did not disclose how many units were sold or say that unit sales fell 33%. The percentage applies to revenue.
Revenue can move with the number of consoles sold, their prices, and the mix of products sold. Without unit totals and comparable pricing and mix data, the reported revenue change cannot be translated into an exact change in unit sales.
Hardware is only part of the Xbox business
Microsoft also reported Xbox content and services revenue down 5% in FY2026 Q3. It said the comparison was against a prior year that benefited from strong first-party content. That is a separate business measure from hardware revenue, not a measure of console sales.

At the FY2026 Q4 call, Microsoft reported Xbox revenue down 10% and Xbox content and services revenue down 10%. It also forecast that hardware revenue would decline year over year in the following quarter, without giving a percentage in the cited passage. That is a forecast, not a reported result for that later quarter.
What Xbox leadership says is behind the pressure
A smaller starting install base and strategy shortfalls
In a July 6, 2026 letter, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said Xbox entered the current generation, or Gen 9, with a smaller install base and a higher cost structure. She said Game Pass, multiplatform publishing, and a broader content portfolio had created value but had not grown as expected. Sharma described the business as unhealthy. These are management’s assessments of the company’s position, not an independent breakdown of how much each factor affected sales.

Higher component costs and constrained console supply
In a June 10, 2026 update, Sharma said storage component costs had risen more than twofold from the previous fall, doubled again, and were expected to exceed five times their price from two years earlier by the 2027 holiday season. She said memory costs had followed a broadly similar trajectory. The five-times figure is Xbox’s forecast, not a measured future price.
Sharma also said Xbox could not make as many consoles as players wanted to buy. That is the company’s account of supply; the cited statements do not quantify how much supply constraints, as opposed to demand or other factors, contributed to the revenue decline.

What Microsoft has said about console costs and access
In a June 25, 2026 console update, Microsoft said storage and memory prices had increased by more than 2.5 times. It also discussed financing and refurbished-console options, and identified Series S as its lowest-cost console option at the time of that update. This was a dated company statement, not a guarantee of current price, stock, financing terms, or regional availability.

What the figures do—and do not—tell you
- They establish: Microsoft reported lower Xbox hardware revenue and attributed the FY2026 Q3 decrease to lower console volume.
- They do not establish: a 33% drop in unit sales, a current worldwide unit total, or a comparable global market-share result against other console makers.
- They distinguish: past reported revenue from a later forecast, and hardware from content and services.
- They attribute: explanations about strategy, component costs, and supply to Xbox leadership; the statements do not independently measure each cause.
