WWE Lawsuits: One Clear Court Loss and Five Notable Settlements

The documented record supports one clear WWE court loss and several notable settlements—not five distinct losses. Here’s what each outcome means and what was officially reported.

The records available for these cases do not support a reliable list of five distinct lawsuits WWE lost. The clearest documented court loss is a 2001 English High Court ruling over WWE’s agreement with the World Wide Fund for Nature. Other notable disputes ended in settlements, which are agreements—not verdicts or automatic admissions of wrongdoing.

What counts as a lawsuit WWE lost?

A court loss means a judge or jury ruled against WWE on a claim. A settlement means the parties agreed to resolve a dispute; it does not, by itself, establish that either side’s allegations were true. Dismissals and rulings for WWE are different outcomes again. The cases below keep those categories separate rather than treating every resolved lawsuit as a defeat.

The clearest documented court loss

World Wide Fund for Nature v. World Wrestling Federation Entertainment

In England in 2001, the High Court granted summary judgment to the World Wide Fund for Nature over WWE’s use of WWF web addresses and its scratch logo, finding a breach of the parties’ 1994 agreement. WWE’s SEC filing describes the resulting compliance steps: it changed its corporate name to World Wrestling Entertainment, adopted WWE initials, and revised its logo. The filing characterizes the ruling as a breach of agreement; it should not be recast as a finding of trademark infringement. WWE’s SEC filing

Notable WWE lawsuits that ended in settlements

These cases were resolved by agreement, not by a judgment that WWE was liable. Where amounts are reported, they are attributed to the company or filing that disclosed them.

Owen Hart family wrongful-death case

Owen Hart’s family brought a wrongful-death case against WWE after his 1999 death during a wrestling event. WWE announced a settlement with the family in 2000. In a 2003 announcement, WWE reported the amount as $18 million; that figure is the company’s account of the settlement, not a court-awarded damages amount. WWE’s 2003 announcement

WWE v. Parents Television Council and others

WWE sued the Parents Television Council and others over statements linking children’s deaths to SmackDown and claims about advertisers. In 2002, WWE announced a settlement under which it would receive $3.5 million plus non-monetary terms, including an apology. The reported amount and terms come from WWE’s announcement, not a damages judgment. WWE’s settlement announcement

MLW Media v. WWE

MLW Media brought antitrust claims against WWE. The allegations were not court findings: WWE’s SEC disclosure says the case settled for $20 million and was dismissed with prejudice on December 26, 2023. The amount was reported in a WWE/TKO SEC filing in 2024. SEC filing

WWE securities litigation

City of Warren Police and Fire Retirement System v. WWE is a securities case with a settlement administrator’s page listing a final order and judgment. That landing page alone does not establish the settlement amount, approval date, class definition, or findings, so those details should not be inferred from it. Shareholder derivative and books-and-records litigation

A 2021 SEC-filed stipulation records a settlement and release in shareholder derivative and books-and-records litigation. Its terms state that the settlement is not an admission of liability or of the claims’ validity or truth; it is therefore not evidence of a court finding that WWE lost. SEC-filed stipulation

Other legal cases that should not be counted as WWE losses

Former wrestlers’ concussion claims

WWE’s 2019 annual report says multiple former wrestlers’ concussion claims were dismissed and that the remaining Singleton/LoGrasso claim ended in summary judgment for WWE. Those outcomes are not examples of WWE losing. WWE’s 2019 annual report

The Lewmar settlement ruling in the Owen Hart litigation

WWE’s 2003 account says a Missouri judge invalidated a no-money settlement between Martha Hart and equipment manufacturer Lewmar. That ruling concerned the separate Lewmar settlement; it was not a judgment against WWE in the family’s wrongful-death case. WWE’s 2003 announcement

SEC matter involving Vince McMahon

The SEC’s 2025 filing describes settled charges against Vince McMahon related to nondisclosure of settlement agreements and states that no charges were brought against WWE in that matter. It is a regulatory matter involving McMahon, not a lawsuit that WWE lost. SEC announcement

A reported merger-litigation agreement in principle

A 2026 SEC filing reports an agreement in principle in WWE merger litigation, including WWE’s expected portion and an anticipated insurance recovery. An agreement in principle is not a trial loss or necessarily a final settlement. The filing’s status should be checked for final approval and disposition before relying on the reported terms.
