That gap matters to investors assessing the economics behind AI infrastructure spending, but neither figure is audited full-year revenue or profit. Public-company filings show meaningful commercial and infrastructure ties to OpenAI; they do not establish that the AI trade is collapsing, or that the spending will earn adequate returns.
Why are investors comparing $50 billion with $70 billion?
The figures reflect different ways of presenting revenue from certain partner transactions, according to Axios’s October 8, 2026, reporting based on investor information and sources. Axios described the $70 billion figure as an attempt to “gross up” OpenAI’s revenue to make a more direct comparison with Anthropic. It reported an annualized figure of about $50 billion using OpenAI’s treatment of certain cloud-partner sales.

Axios said both companies are GAAP compliant but account differently for some partner sales. In its example, Anthropic may record the full amount a customer pays as revenue and the cloud provider’s share as an expense, while OpenAI records only its share of certain partner sales. Which presentation applies can depend on which company controls the customer relationship and is responsible for delivering the product. This is a difference in revenue presentation, not by itself evidence that one company’s business is more profitable.

An annualized run rate takes sales in a particular period and projects them over 12 months. It can help describe the pace of a growing business, but it is not the same as the revenue actually recognized over a completed year. It also says nothing on its own about costs, cash generation, or profit. Axios noted that public-market investors generally prefer actual revenue to annualized constructs; without the financial documentation typical of an earnings release, profitability claims should not be treated as established.

Why does revenue matter to the AI trade?
The investment question is not simply whether AI products are selling. It is whether revenue and customer value can grow enough to cover the cost of training and running models, building data centers, and securing power and computing capacity. Revenue growth is only one side of that calculation: costs, timing, financing, and utilization determine whether commitments produce acceptable returns.
The Associated Press reported that some OpenAI leaders were concerned about supporting massive data-center spending after missed targets, citing a Wall Street Journal report. Those concerns and target misses are attributed reporting, not independently verified OpenAI disclosures. AP framed the wider market debate as whether AI investment will generate enough profits and productivity to justify its scale.

There is evidence of broader business adoption, but it does not settle the return question. The White House’s 2026 Economic Report of the President charts OpenAI’s revenue growth against other historically fast-growing firms. It also says paid AI subscriptions rose from 7% of companies in January 2023 to 45% “today,” citing Kharazian (2026). The report passage does not fully establish the underlying survey’s definition or the observation date, so that 45% figure should not be read as a precise, independently verified measure of current adoption.

Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 filing also warns that rising AI costs or lower prices for AI products could harm its margins and results. That is a company-specific risk disclosure, not a forecast that those outcomes will occur.
Microsoft and OpenAI changed parts of their agreement
Under the amended agreement announced April 27, 2026, Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner, while OpenAI can serve products on other clouds. Microsoft will no longer pay a revenue share to OpenAI; OpenAI will continue paying Microsoft a revenue share through 2030, subject to a cap. Microsoft’s model and product IP license continues through 2032 but becomes non-exclusive. These terms describe a material change in the commercial relationship; they do not determine either company’s future profitability.

The NVIDIA guarantee depends on deployment conditions
NVIDIA’s filing says customer deployments can be constrained by financing, land, power, data-center readiness, and capital. It describes an Ohio campus intended to host NVIDIA compute under 20-year leases to OpenAI, with a conditional guarantee subject to specified conditions. The filing says exposure declines as OpenAI makes lease payments and defines limits. The guarantee’s headline cap should therefore not be mistaken for a payment already made or a loss already incurred.
Does the market reaction prove there is an AI bubble?
No. AP placed the AI-stock decline alongside rising oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty and described the OpenAI-related report as one factor affecting sentiment. A market move after a report does not show that the report alone caused it, and investor concern is not proof that the broader AI trade is a bubble or that OpenAI cannot meet its obligations.

The reported figures and filings establish that investors have reasons to scrutinize the economics: a large gap between revenue presentations, substantial commercial ties, and long-term infrastructure plans. They do not provide a complete picture of OpenAI’s income statement, cash flow, or ability to finance its commitments. No independently published, audited OpenAI income statement or cash-flow statement resolving the October 2026 revenue comparison was identified in the reviewed evidence; that is a limit of the available evidence here, not proof that no such disclosure exists elsewhere.
What should investors watch next?
Rather than treating one run-rate estimate or a stock-market reaction as a verdict, investors can separate the questions that determine whether AI spending pays off:
- Recognized revenue: Look for completed-period results alongside annualized run rates, and note how each company presents partner transactions.
- Costs and margins: Compare revenue growth with the cost of inference, training, and infrastructure; rising sales alone do not establish improving economics.
- Capacity actually in use: Distinguish announced or contracted capacity from facilities that are ready, deployed, and meaningfully utilized.
- Who bears the obligations: Read the terms across model providers, cloud partners, and infrastructure suppliers. Receivables, revenue shares, leases, and conditional guarantees are different kinds of exposure.
- Customer outcomes: Seek evidence that customers receive enough productivity or other value to sustain spending, rather than relying only on adoption claims or announced demand.
For a household investor, the practical distinction is between a company-level risk and a portfolio-level decision. The disclosures above can inform an assessment of individual companies and AI-related exposure, but they do not answer whether a particular security is suitable or predict future returns. Market prices can also respond to forces beyond AI, as AP’s account of the decline illustrates.
