Workday co-founder Aneel Bhusri returned as CEO effective February 6, 2026, ahead of the company’s fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter earnings report. Workday announced the change on February 9; its Q4 results were subsequently released on February 24, so the earnings report is no longer pending.

What changed at Workday

Workday announced that Bhusri, then the company’s executive chair, would resume the CEO role. Carl Eschenbach stepped down as CEO and as a member of Workday’s board. The company said he would support Bhusri and Workday as strategic advisor to the CEO. The SEC filing records Bhusri’s appointment as effective February 6, three days before the public announcement.

Workday characterized the transition as a new chapter focused on leading in the AI era. Bhusri said he was energized to return and to work with company presidents Gerrit Kazmaier and Rob Enslin. Workday described Eschenbach’s tenure as a period of global growth, broader industry focus, and stronger operational discipline.

Why the change was linked to Q4 earnings

The timing put the leadership announcement shortly before Workday’s scheduled fiscal 2026 Q4 and full-year results. At the time, the company said it expected results to be in line with its prior guidance, with an exception for GAAP operating margin disclosed in a February 4 Form 8-K.

That timing does not establish that Q4 performance prompted the CEO change. Workday’s public explanation emphasized leadership for the AI era, and the available public materials do not disclose private board deliberations or demonstrate an earnings-related cause.

Announcement, appointment, and results chronology

Date Event
February 4, 2026 Workday disclosed a GAAP operating-margin exception in a Form 8-K.
February 6, 2026 Bhusri’s appointment as CEO took effect; Eschenbach stepped down as CEO and director.
February 9, 2026 Workday publicly announced the leadership transition and its expectation that fiscal Q4 and full-year results would be in line with prior guidance, except for the stated margin item.
February 24, 2026 Workday released fiscal 2026 Q4 and full-year results.

Accordingly, “ahead of Q4 earnings” describes the February announcement’s timing. It does not mean that investors are still waiting for that report.

What Workday reported for fiscal 2026

In its February 24 results release, Workday reported more than 11,500 global customers, including more than 7,000 customers for its core Financial Management and Human Capital Management products. The company also said its platform delivered 1.7 billion AI actions during fiscal 2026. These are Workday-reported figures, not independent measurements.

Bhusri summarized his perspective on the technology shift in Workday’s February 9 announcement: “AI is a bigger transformation than SaaS — and it will define the next generation of market leaders.” That is his view of the market, rather than an established fact about which companies will lead.
