You might build sites for clients, work for a software company, manage ecommerce stores, write documentation, or sell a product. For many beginners, the most practical start is a clearly scoped service for a defined type of client. WordPress is the tool; your expertise, reliable delivery, and ability to find work are what make it a livelihood.
What a WordPress career can mean
WordPress can be the tool you use to deliver a broader service, the ecosystem you work in, or the foundation for a business you own. Income may come from a salary, contract work, hourly troubleshooting, fixed-price projects, monthly retainers, product sales, consulting, training, publishing, ecommerce, or commissions. These models have different risks: employment tends to reduce your responsibility for selling and collections, while self-employment gives you more control but makes you responsible for the pipeline, scope, payment, and support.
You do not have to be a programmer. Site administration, design, support, content operations, SEO implementation, and project management are legitimate WordPress-related work. But knowing the dashboard alone does not qualify someone to safely restore a broken site, secure accounts, migrate data, or customize complex functionality. Choose a capability you can demonstrate and sell that—not just familiarity with the software.
“WordPress” can also mean either the WordPress.org software installed on hosting or WordPress.com, a hosted service with its own plan boundaries. Which is suitable depends on the client’s need for control, maintenance, budget, and technical capacity. Check current plan limits before recommending a specific setup: WordPress.com’s hosting guidance and pricing page.

WordPress career options
The roles below overlap, but each solves a different problem. Coding level is a rough guide, not a requirement for every position.
| Role | Typical work and useful strengths | Coding level | Income model and main challenge | First proof-of-work project |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Site builder or implementer | Configure WordPress, themes, blocks or a visual builder, forms, navigation, analytics, and launch; strong organization and client communication help. | Low to moderate | Usually project fees or retainers; basic builds face price competition, so specialize or add a distinct outcome. | A complete mobile-friendly small-business demo with a scope, launch checklist, and client handover guide. |
| WordPress designer | Information architecture, wireframes, responsive layouts, design systems, block patterns, and accessible visual choices. | Low to moderate | Employment, design projects, or agency contracts; designs must account for content and implementation constraints. | A case study showing research, page hierarchy, responsive prototypes, and accessibility decisions. |
| Front-end developer | HTML, CSS, JavaScript, themes, blocks, templates, browser testing, and interface performance. | High | Employment or custom projects; requires maintainable work and testing, not just a visual result. | A block theme or custom block with a public demo and documented trade-offs. |
| PHP or plugin developer | Plugins, hooks and filters, data models, permissions, APIs, integrations, tests, and production debugging. | High | Employment, custom development, or product sales; security, compatibility, and support are ongoing responsibilities. | A small plugin with readable code, documentation, tests, and a clear use case. |
| WooCommerce specialist | Products, checkout, payments, shipping, tax configuration, subscriptions, inventory workflows, and integrations. | Moderate to high | Store projects and ongoing support; operational and integration complexity can exceed what a simple install suggests. | A demo store that documents its product, checkout, fulfillment, and support assumptions. |
| Maintenance or support specialist | Updates, backups, recovery, compatibility checks, user management, troubleshooting, and client training. | Moderate | Recurring service or employment; unclear scope and emergency expectations can undermine predictable work. | A maintenance plan specifying included tasks, response times, backup process, and exclusions. |
| Performance specialist | Real-user performance, caching, images, scripts, hosting, databases, CDNs, and regression checks. | Moderate to high | Audits and remediation; results depend on hosting, content, and third-party scripts, so avoid fixed-score promises. | A dated case study that distinguishes lab measurements from real-user data and records test conditions. |
| Accessibility specialist | Keyboard use, semantics, focus, contrast, forms, screen-reader behavior, audits, and remediation. | Moderate | Audits, implementation, or employment; legal obligations differ by location and client context. | An audit and remediation demo with testing methods and clearly stated limits. |
| SEO or content specialist | Research, editorial planning, content migration, on-page work, internal links, analytics, and technical SEO. | Low to moderate | Employment, consulting, or retainers; WordPress alone cannot guarantee search rankings or traffic. | A content plan and before-and-after example explaining decisions and measurement. |
| Technical writer | Product docs, user guides, API references, troubleshooting, release notes, and knowledge bases. | Low to moderate | Employment, contract writing, or documentation projects; clarity and technical accuracy matter as much as prose. | A sample guide that helps a reader complete a real task, with screenshots or examples. |
| Project or account manager | Discovery, requirements, estimates, milestones, client communication, QA coordination, and change control. | Low | Agency employment or contract production; vague requests and rework can erase project margins. | A sample project brief, schedule, risk log, and acceptance checklist. |
| Product, marketing, sales, customer success, or QA | Product planning, advocacy, support, partnerships, content, sales engineering, testing, or community work. | Role-dependent | Usually employment or contract work; requirements vary widely by company and function. | A role-specific portfolio: support analysis, test plan, product brief, campaign, or customer guide. |
| Contributor or community specialist | Core, documentation, support forums, translation, testing, design, training, accessibility, or events. | Role-dependent | Contribution is often unpaid; it can demonstrate skill and build relationships but does not guarantee a job. | A useful, public contribution with a profile and explanation of the work. |
The official Theme Handbook covers both block themes, which use blocks and the Site Editor, and classic themes, which rely more on PHP templates, JavaScript, CSS, hooks, and filters. The Plugin Handbook covers plugin structure, security, hooks, JavaScript, and related development practices. For professional work, avoid modifying WordPress core: updates can overwrite those changes. Put custom functionality in an appropriate plugin or theme instead, as the plugin introduction explains.
Choose a path that fits how you work
- You prefer visual problem-solving and client interaction: Start with implementation or design. Learn enough about hosting, updates, backups, and accessibility to recognize when work exceeds your scope.
- You enjoy diagnosis and debugging: Consider support, maintenance, performance, or development. Methodical troubleshooting and clear incident notes are valuable.
- You like writing and organizing information: Consider technical documentation, content operations, or SEO implementation.
- You prefer relationships and coordination: Project management, account management, consulting, and agency production may suit you better than coding.
- You want to build something reusable: Themes, plugins, blocks, templates, or SaaS products can scale beyond one client at a time, but distribution, compatibility, and support remain ongoing work.
- You value predictable pay and team learning: Look at employment. If you prefer independent work but want recurring revenue, consider a bounded maintenance or support retainer.
- You understand store operations: WooCommerce can be a specialty if you can scope payments, tax, shipping, inventory, fulfillment, and integrations—not just install the plugin.
Skills to learn—and what they prove
Skills useful in nearly every path
- Discovery, written scopes, estimates, and expectation-setting.
- WordPress administration, content workflows, domains, hosting, SSL, backups, and updates.
- Responsive behavior, image optimization, accessibility basics, and browser testing.
- Client communication, documentation, account access practices, and post-launch support.
- Basic understanding of analytics and how a website supports a business goal.
For implementation and design
Learn the block editor, theme and plugin selection, navigation, forms, basic HTML and CSS, content hierarchy, typography, responsive layout, and accessibility checks. A visual builder can be a sensible workflow choice, not a universal requirement. It may be less suitable when a project needs a highly customized content model, tight performance control, or minimal dependencies.

For development
Build from HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, SQL and database concepts, Git, HTTP, DNS, SSL, caching, and web-server fundamentals. Then learn WordPress hooks, template hierarchy, roles and capabilities, the REST API, testing, deployment, security, and coding standards. React or headless architecture is useful for some roles, not a prerequisite for every WordPress job. The official developer portal organizes resources on themes, plugins, blocks, REST API, WP-CLI, coding standards, and more.

For a business or agency
Add lead qualification, proposals, contracts, payment schedules, taxes, insurance considerations, change requests, collections, and service boundaries. Technical skill does not replace these operating skills. If selling a product, plan for documentation, compatibility, security updates, customer support, and marketing as well as development.
Build proof of work, not just a gallery
A portfolio should show how you think and what you delivered. Screenshots can demonstrate visual quality, but a case study should also explain the problem, audience, requirements, decisions, and limitations.

- For performance claims, name the measurement method, date, and conditions; distinguish lab tests from real-user results.
- Explain migration, content, security, backup, launch, and handover work when relevant.
- For development, link to code only when you have permission, and include documentation, tests, and deployment notes.
- Use a fictional demo when needed, and identify it as a demo. Do not imply client work you did not perform or disclose confidential material.
For beginners, a personal site, local-business demo, simple publication, or documented redesign can establish a baseline. More specialized work can follow: a custom block, a staging migration, a WooCommerce demo, an accessibility audit, or a support knowledge base.

Employment and project listings
The WordPress Jobs board lists opportunities across development, design, support, migrations, performance, plugin work, writing, translation, and related areas. It is one source of leads, not a census of the labor market or a promise of remote work. Listings, locations, and availability change. The board’s FAQ recommends building a WordPress.org profile, contributing, and using Learn WordPress courses to demonstrate growth.
Direct outreach and referrals
Look for a specific, visible issue—such as a broken form, confusing mobile navigation, or an outdated store workflow—and offer a small, concrete diagnostic. A focused offer is more credible than a generic pitch to “build websites.” Referral relationships with branding studios, copywriters, photographers, IT providers, SEO consultants, and marketing agencies can help, provided you agree on who manages the client and how introductions work.

Communities and marketplaces
Support forums, local meetups, WordCamps, and contribution can build relationships and make your work visible. They are not guaranteed lead sources; contribute because the work is useful. Marketplaces may help someone test an offer or land early projects, but price competition, poorly defined briefs, platform fees, and review pressure can make them a fragile sole channel.
Price work around scope, risk, and responsibility
There is no responsible universal rate for WordPress work. Geography, specialization, client budget, uncertainty, urgency, business value, technical risk, and included support all matter. Decide whether the client is paying for time, a defined deliverable, ongoing availability, or a business outcome.
| Pricing model | Useful when | Define up front |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly | Troubleshooting is open-ended, requirements are uncertain, or work is drawn from a retainer. | Time tracking, approval thresholds, minimum billing increments if used, and what happens when the estimate is exceeded. |
| Fixed project fee | Deliverables and acceptance criteria can be stated clearly and the delivery process is under control. | Pages, content responsibilities, design rounds, functionality, integrations, migration volume, SEO and accessibility scope, launch support, warranty, exclusions, and payment schedule. |
| Monthly retainer | The client needs recurring maintenance, monitoring, support, content changes, or development capacity. | Included work, response times, emergency handling, carryover rules, and out-of-scope rates. Avoid “unlimited changes” without strict boundaries. |
| Value- or outcome-based | You can credibly connect the work to revenue, leads, efficiency, or reduced risk. | What is measured, who controls contributing factors, the measurement period, and what is not guaranteed. |
Before quoting a project, establish scope in writing: what is being built, what the client supplies, which integrations are included, how revisions work, who owns licenses and accounts, what launch support covers, and how added requests are priced. If the work is uncertain, sell a paid discovery or audit before committing to a large fixed fee.

Use a professional delivery workflow
- Discover: Document goals, audience, requirements, current systems, stakeholders, and constraints.
- Scope: Write deliverables, exclusions, acceptance criteria, payment stages, revision limits, and support terms.
- Inventory access and data: Confirm domain, hosting, email, analytics, payment, and administrator access; arrange an appropriate backup before changes.
- Develop safely: Work in local or staging environments where appropriate. Review software compatibility, use version control for custom code, and keep development separate from production.
- Test: Check responsive layouts, forms, accessibility, browser behavior, performance, permissions, and relevant integrations.
- Review and launch: Control client review against the agreed scope, back up before deployment, then verify DNS, SSL, forms, and key workflows after launch.
- Hand over and maintain: Provide documentation, ownership details, rollback information, and a separately defined maintenance option.
For custom code, validate and sanitize input, escape output, check permissions and nonces where appropriate, test updates before production, and document rollback steps. Do not promise that a site cannot be hacked; define the controls, responsibilities, and response process instead.
WordPress tools and infrastructure: choose for the client
Hosting and builder costs affect project margins, but the right choice depends on technical needs and the person responsible for maintenance. Whenever practical, the client should own the domain, hosting, premium licenses purchased for them, analytics, email, and payment processor accounts; you can administer them without becoming a single point of failure. Prices and plan boundaries change, so confirm current terms before quoting.
| Option | When it may fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress.com | A hosted WordPress setup for clients seeking less infrastructure management; eligible plans support third-party tools, with details depending on the plan. | Plan boundaries may not suit unusual infrastructure, deployment, or server-control requirements. Check the current pricing and hosting guidance. |
| Kinsta | Managed WordPress hosting for sites or agencies that value managed support and operational tooling. | May be excessive for a low-budget, low-traffic site. The provider’s pricing page should be checked for current plans, billing terms, and promotions. |
| WP Engine | Managed hosting for clients who need features such as staging, backups, security tools, and deployment workflows. | Recurring cost must fit the client’s budget and project economics. Check the current plans and the provider’s pricing update; promotional starting prices and standard subscription prices are not necessarily the same. |
| WooCommerce | Stores, subscriptions, memberships, bookings, and customized commerce workflows. | The core platform is free, but hosting, payment processing, extensions, development, tax, fulfillment, and support add costs. WooCommerce says hosting for most stores may be $25–$350 per month and extensions commonly $29–$299 per year; these are its broad estimates, not a quote for a particular store. See WooCommerce pricing. |
| Elementor Pro | Teams that want visual-building workflows, reusable layouts, or dynamic content features. | It is optional, not a required WordPress component. Plan details and prices can change; consult Elementor’s current product page. A builder may be a poor fit if minimal dependencies or precise performance control is paramount. |
WooCommerce describes its core platform as having no monthly platform fee or revenue share; that does not eliminate the other costs of operating a store. Before quoting, map the client’s product, payment, shipping, inventory, tax, and fulfillment processes. Publicly distributed themes or plugins derived from WordPress must comply with applicable licensing requirements; the WordPress Jobs FAQ describes the board’s expectation for publicly released derivative projects. For legal questions, obtain qualified advice.
A practical first 90 days
Days 1–30: learn the workflow
- Build one complete site and practice the dashboard, block editor, domains, hosting, SSL, updates, and backups.
- Learn basic HTML and CSS; write a scope, testing checklist, and launch checklist for your demo.
- Choose one client category or type of problem to investigate.
Days 31–60: focus and document
- Select one initial offer: a small business site, maintenance, migration, WooCommerce setup, accessibility remediation, performance audit, content publishing, or custom development.
- Create two or three examples relevant to that offer, and explain the process, boundaries, and decisions in each.
- Practice estimating and identifying work that should be excluded or separately scoped.
Days 61–90: test demand
- Publish a focused service page and a clear description of who the offer is for.
- Contact relevant businesses and potential referral partners; apply to suitable roles where employment is the goal.
- Offer a paid, narrowly scoped audit or starter project rather than making a vague promise.
- Track conversations, proposals, outcomes, delivery time, and actual profit. Adjust the offer based on what prospects understand and value.
A repeatable service and an honest case study are more useful early targets than a large agency or a promise of passive income.

Mistakes that make WordPress work harder to sustain
- Vague positioning: “WordPress expert” does not tell a buyer what problem you solve. Name the audience and outcome.
- Underpricing instead of narrowing scope: Account for discovery, revisions, licenses, taxes, payment costs, rework, support, and security obligations. Reduce deliverables before cutting standards.
- No change control: Extra pages, new integrations, rewrites, and unrelated email or hosting issues should go through a documented change request.
- Fragile plugin stacks: Check update history, support, security, compatibility, portability, licensing, performance, and vendor lock-in. More plugins are not automatically bad, but overlapping or abandoned dependencies create risk.
- Unclear ownership and recovery: Agree who owns accounts, receives alerts, updates software, retains backups, and responds after a compromise. State whether malware cleanup is included.
- Unsupported guarantees: Do not promise permanent security, legal compliance, search rankings, or a fixed performance score when you do not control all relevant factors.
- Treating AI output as finished work: AI can assist with drafts, boilerplate, error explanations, tests, and documentation, but you remain responsible for checking security, licensing, accessibility, compatibility, performance, and accuracy.
- Expecting product revenue to be passive: Themes, plugins, courses, and SaaS products still require distribution, customer support, compatibility work, security updates, and documentation.
