Recommended Free Tools
Yes—you can launch a simple WooCommerce store in a day, but installing the plugin is only the beginning. A safe launch also requires a compatible host, at least one properly configured product, a verified payment method, tax and shipping rules, working customer emails, published policies, a test order and refund, backups, and a deliberate switch from private Coming soon mode to public Live mode.
WooCommerce is a free, open-source WordPress ecommerce platform, not a fully hosted store service. You keep control of your site, data, theme, plugins and integrations, and WooCommerce does not charge a platform revenue share. In return, you are responsible for hosting, domain registration, HTTPS, updates, security, backups, payment processing, taxes, shipping, email delivery and ongoing maintenance. The core software may be free, but the store is not necessarily inexpensive.
Is WooCommerce the right choice?
WooCommerce is a strong choice if you want a WordPress-based content and commerce website, control over your hosting and data, extensive theme and plugin options, or the ability to add custom product types and integrations. It can support physical goods, downloads, services, subscriptions, bookings, memberships, marketplaces and mixed catalogs, although specialized models generally require additional extensions and configuration.
The trade-off is operational responsibility. With a hosted commerce platform, one vendor typically manages much of the hosting, checkout infrastructure, updates and security. With WooCommerce, you select the host, maintain WordPress and its extensions, investigate compatibility problems, protect customer data and maintain a recovery plan. WooCommerce’s documentation and pricing information explain the platform’s scope and cost structure.

Choose another route if…
- You want hosting, updates, security and checkout managed almost entirely by one vendor.
- You do not want to maintain WordPress or troubleshoot plugin and theme conflicts.
- Your business needs highly specialized enterprise features without integration work.
- A marketplace, social-commerce account or hosted SaaS already meets your immediate needs.
Do not choose WooCommerce because someone promises it is universally cheaper. The total cost can include hosting, the domain, premium themes or extensions, payment processing, tax automation, shipping services, email delivery, development, security, backups and maintenance. WooCommerce currently gives broad estimates of roughly $25 to $350 per month for hosting and $29 to $299 per year per extension, but those are general estimates, not a guaranteed budget. Processor fees also vary by country, card type, currency and account.
What to have ready before installing
Gather these items before you begin. Missing product information, payment verification or a tax decision—not the plugin installation itself—often causes the longest delays.
- Domain: the domain name and access to its DNS settings.
- Hosting: WordPress hosting with current PHP and database versions, HTTPS, backups and preferably staging.
- Administrator access: a WordPress administrator account.
- Business information: the legal or operating business name, physical address and monitored store email.
- Market: currency, selling countries and states, shipping destinations and any excluded locations.
- Product data: titles, descriptions, prices, sale prices, SKUs, images, stock quantities, weights, dimensions, categories, variations and download files where applicable.
- Payments: an approved payment-processor account, or the identity, bank and business documents needed for verification.
- Fulfillment: a shipping or pickup plan, delivery estimates and a returns process.
- Policies: privacy, terms and conditions, refunds and returns, shipping, contact information, and subscription or warranty terms where relevant.
- Tax decision: professional guidance on whether you must collect tax, where, at what rate and for which products.
- Email: a sender address using your domain and an email provider capable of reliably delivering transactional messages.
- Recovery: an off-site backup system, a tested restore process and a staging site if possible.
Use a current server stack
For a new production store, target WordPress’s current recommended baseline: PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.11 or newer, and HTTPS. WordPress lists these requirements at wordpress.org/about/requirements. WooCommerce documentation may still mention older technical minimums such as PHP 7.4 and MySQL 5.6 or MariaDB 10.1, but those legacy minimums are not a sensible target for a new store; see the WooCommerce PHP guidance.
Ask a host about staging, daily or real-time backups, restore support, PHP workers and memory, database performance, scheduled tasks, caching controls and support response times. A low-cost plan may install WooCommerce successfully yet fail during checkout, a large CSV import, scheduled actions or a traffic spike.
Phase 1: Install WordPress and WooCommerce
Install WordPress through your host or a manual WordPress installation, update it, and confirm HTTPS works before adding ecommerce functionality. Then install the official plugin:
- Open WP Admin → Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Search for WooCommerce.
- Choose Install Now.
- Choose Activate.
- Complete or skip the WooCommerce Setup Wizard.
WooCommerce’s installation documentation confirms this route. Activation adds WooCommerce menus and creates the main product, order, customer-role, page and store structures. Do not install multiple plugins that duplicate the cart, checkout, payment, tax or order-management functions. Start with the smallest useful stack so a failed checkout has fewer possible causes.
For orientation, a research snapshot dated August 10, 2026 listed WooCommerce 10.9.4, released July 7, 2026, and WordPress 7.0.2, released July 17, 2026. Releases are frequent, so verify the WooCommerce releases page and WordPress news and releases immediately before publishing or following version-specific instructions. Dashboard labels can move between releases.
Phase 2: Run the setup wizard without over-installing extras
The onboarding flow asks for your store name, industry, product types, location and store email. It may recommend payment, shipping, tax, marketing or security features based on your answers. Those recommendations are optional, and some may request a WordPress.com or Jetpack connection. Record what you activate so you know which services and plugins are actually running.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Enter the real business location, not the market you hope to sell into.
- Use a monitored business email; do not enter an address nobody checks.
- Select the actual product model: physical, digital, service, subscription, booking or mixed.
- Skip optional extensions until you understand their recurring fees, data access, compatibility and cancellation terms.
- Leave the store private while you build. The current setup process and launch checklist are described in WooCommerce’s Setup Wizard documentation.
Phase 3: Configure the store foundation
General settings
Open WooCommerce → Settings → General and review every field rather than accepting defaults. Confirm:
- Store address and business location.
- Selling locations and whether sales are restricted to selected countries.
- Shipping locations and whether shipping is offered everywhere you sell.
- Default customer location, such as no location, shop base address or geolocation.
- Currency, currency position, thousands separator and decimal separator.
- Number of decimals and rounding behavior.
- Whether coupons are enabled and whether coupons can be used with sale items.
- Weight and dimension units.
- WordPress time zone, date format and time format.
- Store email address and the address used for administrative notifications.
- Permalinks under Settings → Permalinks; readable product URLs are generally easier for customers to understand.
There is no universal correct tax or customer-location setting. The answer depends on where the business is registered, where it has tax obligations, what it sells and whether catalog prices are displayed tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive.
Verify the essential pages
WooCommerce normally creates Shop, Cart, Checkout and My Account pages during installation, but verify their assignments. A page can exist while containing the wrong block, shortcode or template. Check the relevant page settings under WooCommerce → Settings, then open each page as a customer.
Create and link these pages before launch:
- Shop or catalog.
- Cart.
- Checkout.
- My Account.
- Privacy Policy.
- Terms and Conditions.
- Refund and returns policy.
- Shipping information.
- Contact page with a monitored contact method.
- Warranty, safety, subscription cancellation or other disclosures where relevant.
For a block-based checkout, the selected checkout page must be designated under WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced for checkout functionality to work correctly. Add policy, contact, shipping and returns links to the header or footer, menus and mobile navigation. Customers should not have to hunt for the information that determines whether they will buy.
Phase 4: Choose a theme and build the minimum viable storefront
You have two practical routes:
Block theme and Site Editor
A compatible block theme lets you edit more WooCommerce templates through Appearance → Editor, including product, catalog, cart and checkout elements. WooCommerce provides blocks for product catalogs, product pages, mini-cart, cart, checkout and filters. See the documentation for store editing and WooCommerce blocks.
Storefront or another compatible theme
Storefront remains WooCommerce’s official free theme. Install it from Appearance → Themes → Add New, search for Storefront, choose Install and then Activate. The path is documented in WooCommerce’s installation and configuration guide.

- Color: Black. Dimensions: 3.6 x 2.6 x 6.1 inches. Type of Cable: 2M or 6ft straight cable. Shock: 1.5m drop on concrete surface. Regulatory Approvals: FCC CE.
Choose a lightweight, actively maintained theme that explicitly supports WooCommerce. Do not choose solely on the strength of a demo. Before committing, test product pages, variation selectors, cart, checkout, account pages, emails, mobile layouts, keyboard navigation and accessibility. Avoid changing themes immediately before launch unless the current theme prevents checkout from working.
For the first launch, prioritize a clear logo, readable typography, useful product photos, consistent colors, simple navigation, visible shipping and returns information, and a fast path from product to checkout. A perfect homepage cannot compensate for a payment method that fails.
Phase 5: Add products correctly
Start with one representative product and complete a purchase test before importing the entire catalog. Open Products → Add New. The core product types are:
| Type | Use it for | Important setup |
|---|---|---|
| Simple | One item with no customer-selected variation | Price, SKU, inventory, tax and shipping data |
| Variable | Size, color, material or other choices | Attributes and variations; each variation can have its own price, SKU, image, stock and shipping data |
| Grouped | A collection of separately purchasable products | Each component remains its own product |
| External or Affiliate | An item whose purchase occurs at another seller | Product information and the destination URL |
| Virtual | A service or item requiring no physical delivery | No shipping calculation is needed |
| Downloadable | An ebook, software file, template or other digital file | Upload or link files, set download limits and expiry |
A downloadable product that is not also marked Virtual can still display shipping fields and trigger shipping calculations. Mark a fully digital, non-physical product as both virtual and downloadable. A fully virtual and downloadable order can skip Processing and move directly to Completed. WooCommerce explains these behaviors in its product editor documentation.
Product-entry checklist
- Write a specific product name and description that answers what the item is, who it is for and what the customer receives.
- Add a concise short description or summary.
- Enter the regular price and sale price, if applicable. Confirm the currency and whether prices include tax.
- Add a unique SKU if you track inventory or integrate with another system.
- Choose whether WooCommerce manages stock, whether backorders are allowed and how out-of-stock products appear.
- Enter weight and dimensions for physical products.
- Add a main image, gallery, useful alt text and consistent image sizes.
- Assign categories, tags, attributes and the correct tax class.
- Assign a shipping class if your shipping rules depend on product size or type.
- For variable products, create every attribute and variation, set a price and stock status for each, and choose a sensible default selection.
- For downloads, add the files, download limits and expiry rules, and decide whether customers may access the file after a refund.
- Add cross-sells or upsells only where they genuinely help the customer.
Product weight and dimensions matter for live carrier rates and fulfillment integrations. Core flat-rate shipping does not calculate a carrier-style rate from dimensions; it uses your configured method and shipping classes. See WooCommerce’s shipping troubleshooting guidance.
Physical, digital, service and advanced stores
- Physical catalog: configure inventory, weight, dimensions, tax, shipping zones and fulfillment.
- Digital catalog: configure file access, download security, limits and expiry; test the customer download email.
- Services: usually use virtual products and explain scheduling or fulfillment separately. Bookings may require an extension.
- Subscriptions: confirm that the gateway supports recurring payments, renewals, failed-payment recovery, refunds and cancellation. Do not assume a normal one-time card gateway handles subscriptions.
- Mixed catalog: test carts containing physical and digital items together, especially shipping and tax behavior.
Bulk import with CSV
For more than a few products, use WooCommerce’s built-in importer:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Go to Products → All Products.
- Choose Import.
- Upload the CSV.
- Continue to column mapping.
- Review and confirm the mappings.
- Choose Run the Importer.
- Read the import log and inspect products on the public storefront.
WooCommerce can match existing products by product ID or SKU when updating. Spreadsheet programs, particularly Excel, can change encoding, leading zeros and special characters. Export an existing product first and use that file as a template. Check image URLs, parent-child variation relationships, tax-class names, required columns and the import log. The official CSV importer documentation covers the format and update behavior.
Phase 6: Set up payments
Open WooCommerce → Settings → Payments, or use the separate Payments menu when your installation provides it. Install or enable one gateway, complete merchant verification, connect the correct bank account, configure the payment methods and enable test mode.
WooPayments is optional. WooCommerce supports multiple gateways, and WooPayments is only one choice. If you want to use an existing regular Stripe account, use the separate Stripe extension: WooPayments creates a Stripe Express account and cannot connect an existing standard Stripe account. Review the WooPayments requirement explanation, its startup requirements and the documentation on its relationship with Stripe.
Compare gateways by business needs
Assess each provider for:
- Supported merchant country and customer countries.
- Card networks, digital wallets and local payment methods.
- Supported currencies and conversion costs.
- One-time and recurring-payment support.
- Hosted, embedded or redirected checkout architecture.
- Checkout-block compatibility.
- Refund workflow, dispute handling and chargeback tools.
- Payout timing and reserve policies.
- Fraud controls and authentication.
- Transaction, currency-conversion, dispute and payout fees.
- Account-verification requirements and support quality.
Payment providers are not interchangeable. Rates and terms depend on country, card type, payment method, currency, merchant category and processor account. Use current country-specific pricing from the provider rather than an old fee table. WooCommerce’s pricing page provides broad context but is not a substitute for your processor agreement.

- Enable the gateway’s test or sandbox mode.
- Place a successful test order.
- Test a declined payment.
- Test an abandoned or interrupted external payment flow.
- Confirm order-status changes and webhooks.
- Test a refund from the WooCommerce order screen and, where required, the processor dashboard.
- Confirm customer and administrator payment notifications.
- Switch to live mode only after the results are correct.
Do not place real test orders and refund yourself as a replacement for test mode. WooPayments states that fees on live-mode test transactions are not refunded; see its testing documentation.
If you install WooPayments and the Stripe extension together, you may create duplicate Apple Pay, Google Pay or similar express-payment buttons. Use only the integrations you need and follow WooCommerce’s coexistence guidance.
Phase 7: Configure taxes without guessing
WooCommerce can calculate and display tax; it cannot decide whether your business is legally required to collect it. Those are separate questions. Your obligations depend on business registration, customer location, product type, marketplace rules and local law. Consult an accountant or tax professional before publishing rates. WooCommerce explicitly describes its tax documentation as software configuration guidance, not tax advice.
Manual tax setup
- Open WooCommerce → Settings → General.
- Enable tax rates and calculations.
- Save the settings.
- Open WooCommerce → Settings → Tax.
- Choose whether catalog prices are entered inclusive or exclusive of tax.
- Choose the address used for tax calculation: customer shipping address, customer billing address or shop base address.
- Select the shipping tax class.
- Add rates under the relevant tax class.
- Test multiple destinations and product types.
A tax-rate row may include country, state, ZIP or postcode, city, percentage, tax name, priority, compound status and whether the rate applies to shipping. Pay attention to:

- Tax-inclusive versus tax-exclusive catalog pricing.
- Shipping-tax rules and the selected shipping tax class.
- Multiple rates with different priorities.
- Product-specific tax classes.
- Digital products, services, subscriptions and international sales, which may follow different rules.
- Automated tax plugins or services that override or disable core settings.
Tax tables change. Never upload a sample United States tax CSV to production without verifying every rate, jurisdiction and effective date. If a total looks wrong, first check the address used for calculation, product tax class, customer address, shipping-tax flag, rate priority and whether an automated service or cache is affecting the result. Do not fix a legal tax discrepancy by guessing a percentage.
Phase 8: Configure shipping
WooCommerce core includes Flat Rate, Free Shipping and Local Pickup. Flat Rate can be charged per item, per shipping class or per order. Free Shipping can require a minimum order amount. Local Pickup is suitable when customers collect from a defined location. Review the core shipping options.
Set up zones in the right order
- Define where you actually ship—not merely where you sell.
- Open WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping → Shipping zones.
- Create zones for the specific countries, states or postal regions you serve.
- Put the most specific zones first and broad zones later.
- Add methods to each zone.
- Configure rates, minimums, shipping classes and conditions.
- Test an address that should match each zone.
- Test an address that should match Rest of the World or receive no available method.
WooCommerce assigns the customer to the first shipping zone that fits the shipping address. A broad zone listed above a specific one can therefore display the wrong method or price. Do not leave a worldwide flat-rate zone above a state-specific or country-specific zone.
Choose a method that matches your margins
- Flat rate: fastest to launch and easiest to explain, but estimate an amount that protects your margin.
- Free shipping: can simplify checkout, but its cost must be included in product pricing or minimum-order economics.
- Local pickup: useful for local businesses; publish the address, hours, pickup instructions and identification requirements.
- Live carrier rates: more precise but dependent on accurate package data, carrier APIs, account setup and extension compatibility.
- Table-rate shipping: useful for weight, price, quantity or destination rules, usually through an extension.
- Third-party fulfillment: appropriate when inventory, tracking and shipping are managed externally; test synchronization and failure handling.
For eligible U.S.-based stores using U.S. dollars, WooCommerce Shipping can buy and print discounted labels for UPS, USPS, DHL Express and FedEx. It does not itself provide live checkout rates. See WooCommerce Shipping availability.
For physical products, verify that packaging, handling time, delivery estimates, insurance, international duties and returns are communicated. A shipping rate is not the same thing as a delivery promise.
Phase 9: Cart, checkout, accounts and privacy
Block checkout versus shortcode checkout
New stores generally use the block-based Cart and Checkout experience. The Checkout block includes customer fields, payment choices, totals, coupons, delivery, local pickup and terms-and-conditions components. The current Checkout block documentation explains the available components and page assignment.
Use blocks when your chosen gateway, checkout-field extensions, theme and custom integrations support them. Use the legacy shortcode checkout temporarily when a required gateway does not support blocks, a checkout-field plugin depends on legacy PHP hooks, custom code has not been migrated or an extension specifically instructs you to use shortcodes.
A gateway can be installed and enabled yet be unavailable in a block checkout if it lacks the required front-end block integration. Check the exact gateway and extension versions against WooCommerce’s Cart and Checkout compatibility guidance. Do not assume every payment or checkout plugin works with blocks.

Under the Accounts and Privacy settings, decide whether to allow guest checkout, customer account creation during checkout, account creation on the My Account page, personal-data retention and erasure behavior. WooCommerce’s customer documentation covers these controls.
- Guest checkout: fewer barriers and often appropriate for one-time purchases.
- Accounts: useful for order history, downloads, subscriptions, saved addresses and repeat purchases.
- Forced accounts: add friction and need a clear business reason.
Write policies for the actual business and jurisdiction. WooCommerce cannot determine whether your privacy policy, returns policy or terms satisfy local law. For U.S. businesses, also investigate state and local sales-tax obligations, licenses, product labeling and safety rules, privacy obligations, commercial-email rules and payment-data responsibilities.
Phase 10: Make transactional email reliable
Open WooCommerce → Settings → Emails. Review the settings for:
- New order.
- Cancelled order.
- Failed order.
- Order on hold.
- Processing order.
- Completed order.
- Refunded order.
- Customer invoice or order details.
- Customer note.
- New account.
- Password reset.
For each email, check whether it is enabled, who receives it, sender name and address, subject, heading, additional content, format and branding. WooCommerce supports previews and test emails; its email settings documentation lists the available controls.
Use a sender address on your store’s domain and authenticate it through your email provider with SPF, DKIM and DMARC where supported. Test customer order confirmation, administrator new-order alerts, failed-payment messages, refunds, password resets, downloads and completion or shipping notifications on mobile. Verify that links lead to the production domain and that the messages do not land in spam.
If messages do not arrive, check whether the order is still Pending payment, whether the notification is enabled, whether the recipient and sender addresses are correct, whether the provider rejected the message, and whether a plugin or theme conflict exists. A dedicated SMTP or transactional-email provider may be needed. Use WooCommerce’s email troubleshooting FAQ and logs.

If you send promotional email in the United States, the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guidance covers accurate sender information and an opt-out mechanism. Transactional order messages and marketing messages are not the same thing, so configure them accordingly.
HPOS: what new and existing stores need to know
High-Performance Order Storage, or HPOS, is enabled by default for new WooCommerce installations from WooCommerce 8.2 onward. It stores order data in dedicated tables designed for more efficient order management. That does not guarantee a particular speed improvement for every store, and extensions must support it.
If you are creating a new store, keep current extensions and custom code compatible with the default. If you are moving an existing store:
- Take a full database and file backup.
- Clone the site to staging.
- Update WooCommerce, the theme, extensions and custom code.
- Check WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → Features.
- Enable compatibility mode if required and allow orders to synchronize.
- Confirm that no orders remain unsynchronized.
- Switch to HPOS.
- Test new orders, editing, refunds, reports, subscriptions and every integration.
- Monitor the live store after migration.
With WP-CLI, the current namespace is wp wc hpos; older articles may use the deprecated wp wc cot namespace.
wp wc hpos status
wp wc hpos count_unmigrated
wp wc hpos sync
wp wc hpos verify_data
wp wc hpos enable --with-sync
wp wc hpos disable
These commands and migration requirements are documented in WooCommerce’s HPOS merchant guide and HPOS CLI documentation. Do not enable or disable HPOS on a high-volume live store without a tested backup, staging environment and extension review.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security, backups and legal readiness
Minimum security baseline
- Use HTTPS throughout the site, including checkout and account pages.
- Use strong, unique administrator passwords and two-factor authentication.
- Give users the least privilege they need; do not make every contractor an administrator.
- Keep WordPress, WooCommerce, themes and plugins current.
- Remove abandoned, unused, pirated or nulled plugins and themes.
- Maintain off-site backups and test restoring them.
- Use staging for major updates and database migrations.
- Monitor failed payments, unusual administrator logins, malware alerts, checkout errors and scheduled actions.
WooCommerce’s security best practices, WordPress’s hardening guidance and its update documentation all emphasize current software, backups and access controls. WordPress updates can fail because of file-system, permissions or database issues, so take a backup before updating.
HTTPS or a hosted payment gateway does not automatically make the entire store PCI compliant. Your payment-page architecture, scripts, hosting, merchant processes and processor requirements determine the applicable obligations. Review the PCI Security Standards Council’s guidance on payment-page security and ecommerce skimming.
Accessibility is part of launch readiness
For U.S. businesses open to the public, the Department of Justice explains that inaccessible web content can limit access to goods and services and identifies WCAG as a useful technical reference, while noting that its guidance does not create one detailed technical regulation for every private business. Review the DOJ web accessibility guidance and obtain legal advice for your situation.
At minimum, test:
- Keyboard navigation and visible focus states.
- Proper labels and useful instructions for every form field.
- Readable color contrast.
- Descriptive alt text for meaningful product images.
- Clear, specific checkout error messages.
- Screen-reader behavior for product selectors, cart and checkout.
- Accessible buttons and links.
- Information that is not conveyed by color alone.
- Captions or transcripts for important video.
The FTC also recommends reasonable security practices such as access controls, encryption, vendor oversight, software updates and regular backups in its small-business security guide and cybersecurity resources.
The complete pre-launch test
Do not mark the store ready because the homepage looks finished. Run this checklist from a customer’s perspective, preferably on staging first and then on the public production site after launch.

- Take a final database and file backup.
- Confirm the gateway is in live mode and connected to the correct bank account.
- Confirm production tax rates, tax classes and shipping prices.
- Confirm stock, product visibility, policies, contact details and delivery estimates.
- Confirm transactional email delivery.
- Open WooCommerce → Settings → Site Visibility.
- Switch the store from Coming soon to Live.
- Clear host, CDN, WordPress and plugin caches.
- Open the public domain in an incognito window and complete a customer-side review.
- Monitor the first real order, payment settlement, stock change, customer email and fulfillment process.
WooCommerce’s Coming soon and Live-mode documentation explains the visibility controls. If the store still appears hidden, check that the store-only visibility toggle is off, the domain resolves to the production server, caches are cleared and a maintenance or security plugin is not masking the site.
Use a real low-value order only when a required production behavior cannot be validated in the processor’s test mode and you understand the fees and refund implications. It should be an informed operational test, not a casual substitute for sandbox testing.
After the first sale
Launching is the start of the operating process. For the first order, verify:
- The payment is authorized or settled according to the gateway’s status, not merely shown as an order in WordPress.
- Inventory decreased correctly.
- The customer received the expected confirmation.
- The order is assigned to the correct fulfillment status.
- The shipping address, pickup instructions or download access are correct.
- Tracking or delivery communication is sent when promised.
- Refunds can be issued and recorded correctly.
- Tax and payment records are retained for your accounting process.
- Backups complete and error logs do not show checkout or webhook failures.
Establish a weekly or monthly maintenance routine for updates, backup-restore checks, failed-payment monitoring, plugin review, administrator access review, email deliverability and checkout testing. Add analytics, abandoned-cart monitoring and conversion improvements only after the basic order path is dependable.

WooCommerce troubleshooting quick reference
Payment method is missing at checkout
Check block-checkout compatibility, merchant verification, supported country and currency, HTTPS, test or live mode, API keys, webhooks and gateway logs. Try the shortcode checkout temporarily to identify a block-compatibility problem. Update the gateway and disable duplicate wallet integrations before contacting the provider.
Local pickup appears twice
With block checkout, do not also add the legacy Local Pickup method to shipping zones. The block-based option is managed under WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping → Local pickup. Review the shipping troubleshooting guide.
The wrong shipping method appears
Reorder zones from narrowest and most specific to broadest. WooCommerce uses the first matching zone, so a worldwide or Rest of the World zone placed too early can capture addresses intended for a more precise zone.
Tax is missing or incorrect
Check that tax calculations are enabled, the product has the correct tax class, the calculation address is correct, the customer has supplied the required address, shipping is marked taxable where appropriate, and automated tax has not overridden manual settings. Also review the rate’s state, ZIP, city, priority and shipping flag. Ask a tax professional about the legal answer.

Check whether the order is still Pending payment, whether the notification is enabled, whether the recipient and sender are correct, whether the sender domain is authenticated, whether the mail provider rejected the message, whether SMTP is needed and whether a plugin or theme conflict exists. Review WooCommerce logs and the email FAQ.
The store remains hidden
Confirm WooCommerce → Settings → Site Visibility is set to Live, clear host and CDN caches, check DNS, and disable any maintenance or security mode. Server caching can delay the public display after the setting changes.
HPOS migration breaks an extension
Stop the migration, preserve the backup, confirm order synchronization, check the incompatible-extension list, update or contact the extension developer, and return to a tested state only after the compatibility requirements are satisfied. Repeat the process on staging before trying again.
CSV import skips products
Check encoding, headers, product IDs or SKUs, image URLs, required columns, variation-parent relationships, tax-class names and the import log. Do not refresh the browser during import. Export an existing product and use it as the schema template.

A digital product still charges shipping
Mark it Virtual as well as Downloadable when no physical delivery is required. Downloadable alone does not necessarily remove shipping calculations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I launch WooCommerce without coding?
A basic store can usually be configured without writing code: install WordPress and WooCommerce, choose a compatible theme, add products, connect a supported gateway and configure core shipping. Custom checkout fields, advanced shipping and tax rules, subscriptions, bookings, migrations and unusual integrations may require technical help.
Do I need WooPayments to accept payments with WooCommerce?
No. WooPayments is optional. You can choose another compatible gateway, including a separate Stripe extension if you need to connect an existing standard Stripe account. Compare country support, currencies, payment methods, recurring-payment support, fees, refunds, disputes and block-checkout compatibility before choosing.
How much does it cost to start a WooCommerce store?
The core WooCommerce plugin is free, but a real store may require paid hosting, a domain, payment processing, extensions, tax or shipping services, email delivery, development, security and backups. WooCommerce gives broad estimates of about $25–$350 monthly for hosting and $29–$299 yearly per extension, but actual costs vary and processor fees are separate.
Why does my payment gateway not appear on the Checkout block?
The gateway may not support the block-based checkout, or its merchant verification, country, currency, HTTPS, API keys or webhooks may be incomplete. Check the gateway’s exact compatibility documentation, test the legacy shortcode checkout, review gateway logs and update the extension. Do not assume that an enabled gateway is automatically block-compatible.
Why is my new store still private after I finished building it?
WooCommerce can keep a new store in Coming soon mode. Open WooCommerce → Settings → Site Visibility and switch it to Live, then clear host, CDN and plugin caches. Also confirm DNS points to the production server and that a maintenance or security plugin is not hiding the site.
The Bottom Line
WooCommerce can launch a simple store today, but a store is not ready merely because the plugin is active. The safe launch gate is a verified payment method, correct product and order behavior, professionally reviewed tax and policy decisions, tested shipping, reliable email, HTTPS, backups, a completed test order and a public customer-side check after switching Site visibility to Live.
