Games canceled Monolith Productions’ Wonder Woman game and announced the closure of Monolith, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego on February 25, 2025. The publisher said the decision was part of a strategic shift in its studio structure and investment priorities—not a statement that it was abandoning DC games.
What Warner Bros. announced
Warner Bros. Games said development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman videogame “will not move forward.” In the same announcement, the company named three studios it was closing: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. Variety reported the statement and the closures on February 25, 2025; GameSpot also reported the announcement.
Why was the Wonder Woman game canceled?
Warner Bros. Games described the move as “a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent.” Its spokesperson said the company had made difficult decisions to structure development studios and investment around Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. The spokesperson also said the publisher had hoped to deliver a high-quality experience for the character but that it was no longer possible within those priorities. These are the company’s stated reasons; they do not establish why the project specifically could not proceed.
The inclusion of DC among the named priorities matters: this cancellation does not show that Warner Bros. had abandoned DC games as a whole. The announcement instead paired the cancellation and studio closures with a broader reorganization of investment.

Which studios closed, and what were they working on?
| Studio | Project or context reported |
|---|---|
| Monolith Productions | Developed the canceled Wonder Woman game and was known for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. |
| Player First Games | Developed MultiVersus. |
| Warner Bros. Games San Diego | Was working on an unannounced free-to-play project, according to GameSpot’s coverage. |
The closures therefore affected studios with different projects, not three teams all making the same game. Warner Bros. Games did not identify a successor studio or a replacement project for Wonder Woman in the cited announcement.
What the Wonder Woman game was supposed to be
Warner Bros. announced the project in December 2021 as a single-player, open-world action game with an original story set in the DC Universe. The initial description said players would become Diana of Themyscira. The announcement did not establish a release date, a final list of platforms, detailed gameplay, or a completed build. GameSpot’s report covers the cancellation and the project’s earlier announcement.

What is known about the reported cost?
GameSpot relayed a separate report that Warner Bros. had spent more than $100 million on the Wonder Woman project and that it was nowhere close to release. That figure is a secondary report—not an audited final budget or a cost Warner Bros. confirmed in the cited coverage. GameSpot’s coverage attributes the project-spend estimate to separate reporting.
Do not confuse that project-specific estimate with wider games-division charges. Variety reported that Warner Bros. Discovery recorded a games-division impairment charge of more than $100 million in the third quarter of 2024 and total games write-downs of more than $300 million for 2024, citing company executive disclosures. Those figures concern the division, not the cost of making Wonder Woman.
