In August 2016, a slot machine at Resorts World Casino in Queens displayed $42,949,672.76 to player Katrina Bookman. The casino said the machine had malfunctioned, and the New York State Gaming Commission reportedly agreed that the screen was erroneous. Bookman later sued the casino and others, seeking damages based on the displayed amount. The casino reportedly offered her the $2.25 printed on her ticket and a complimentary steak dinner; she declined.
What the machine displayed—and what the casino said happened
Bookman was playing a Sphinx penny slot machine when its screen showed $42,949,672.76. She took a selfie with the display, believing she had hit a jackpot. When she returned to collect, Resorts World Casino told her the figure resulted from a malfunction, according to Inside Edition’s account.
That distinction matters: the screen showed the amount, but the available reporting does not establish that Bookman won it. The casino reportedly said the ticket showed a balance of $2.25 and offered that amount along with a complimentary steak dinner. Bookman declined the offer.
What the Gaming Commission reportedly found
Inside Edition quoted the New York State Gaming Commission as saying: “The log proved that no prize had been won. The display of $42.9 million was clearly a display malfunction.” The same report said the machine carried the disclaimer, “Malfunction voids all pays and plays.”

Contemporary coverage also reported that the machine’s maximum payout was $6,500. FOX 5 New York and TIME attributed to the Commission the position that the malfunction rules meant that amount could not be paid in this incident. That is the reported position in this case, not a statement here about how every casino-machine malfunction must be handled under New York law.
What Bookman alleged in her lawsuit
Bookman filed suit in Queens County Supreme Court in June 2017. Reporting identified the defendants as Resorts World Casino, Genting New York LLC, and International Game Technology, the slot-machine maker. The complaint alleged negligence, breach of contract, and negligent misrepresentation, and sought damages tied to the displayed $42,949,672.76. It also alleged emotional and financial harm. These were allegations, not findings that the defendants were liable.

Bookman’s attorney, Alan Ripka, questioned whether the machine had been adequately inspected and maintained. The casino’s spokesman, Dan Bank, called the display an “obvious malfunction” and said the Gaming Commission had confirmed it. In a statement quoted by Inside Edition, Bank added: “Machine malfunctions are rare and we would like to extend our apologies to Ms. Bookman for any inconvenience this may have caused.” The competing statements describe the parties’ positions; they do not amount to an independent technical account of what caused the display.
