Wolves’ and Middlesbrough’s published wage figures differ sharply, but their accounts do not provide a like-for-like first-team comparison. For the periods ending 30 June 2025, Wolves reported £142.427 million in wages and salaries across its group over 13 months; Middlesbrough’s 2024/25 accounts showed £36.4 million in wage costs over 12 months. A separate 2026/27 comparison from Capology estimates fixed first-team wages at £61.88 million for Wolves and £22.282 million for Middlesbrough. Those are estimates, not official accounts figures.
What do the published wage figures show?
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 2025 group accounts report £162.951 million in total staff costs for the 13-month period ended 30 June 2025. That total includes £142.427 million in wages and salaries, as well as social security and pension costs. The accounts give an average monthly headcount of 386, including 97 playing staff. BBC Sport reported that Middlesbrough’s 2024/25 accounts showed £36.4 million in wage costs for the 12 months to 30 June 2025. The same report put turnover at £32.5 million and the club’s loss at £11.4 million. BBC Sport

| Wolves: total staff costs | £162.951 million | 13 months to 30 June 2025; group-wide, including wages and salaries, social security, and pension |
| Wolves: wages and salaries | £142.427 million | 13 months to 30 June 2025; group-wide |
| Middlesbrough: wage costs | £36.4 million | 12 months to 30 June 2025; reported from the club’s 2024/25 accounts by BBC Sport |

Why the accounts do not give an apples-to-apples comparison
Wolves’ accounts cover one more month and report group-wide staff costs, while the Middlesbrough figure is described as wage costs. Wolves’ £142.427 million wages-and-salaries figure is narrower than its total staff-cost figure, but it is still group-wide rather than a first-team payroll figure. The two clubs’ published numbers therefore should not be presented as directly comparable first-team wage bills.

The difference in reporting periods also matters: the Wolves total covers 13 months, against 12 months for Middlesbrough. Dividing one figure by 13 and the other by 12 would not solve the scope difference or establish comparable player-pay totals.
What current-season estimates suggest
Capology estimates 2026/27 fixed first-team wages at £61.88 million for Wolves and £22.282 million for Middlesbrough. These are estimates for the season, not official figures from club accounts. Capology says its fixed-wage estimates exclude bonuses and do not include a range of staff and personnel costs that appear in official financial statements. | Wolves | £61.88 million | 2026/27; Capology estimate, excluding bonuses |
| Middlesbrough | £22.282 million | 2026/27; Capology estimate, excluding bonuses |
This estimate-based comparison has a more similar stated scope than the accounts figures because it refers to fixed first-team wages for both clubs. It remains a comparison of estimates, and it should not be combined with the audited or reported accounts figures as if they were measuring the same thing.

BBC Sport reported that Rob Edwards moved from Middlesbrough to Wolves in November 2025. In an official interview dated 29 May 2026, Wolves identified Edwards as its head coach and described his focus on the club’s future after the 2025/26 season. That timeline explains why the clubs’ finances are being discussed alongside Edwards, but the figures do not show that his move caused either club’s wage costs or that the move was driven by a wage-bill difference. The available figures describe distinct accounting totals and a separate set of payroll estimates; they do not establish a financial link to the managerial change.
