The exclusive publishing agreement between Wizards of the Coast and Giant Skull, announced June 2, 2025, is no longer in effect. Reporting published May 19, 2026 said the deal was terminated earlier in 2026 after Wizards decided not to pursue an early concept for the planned Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure. The original 2025 announcement still explains what was planned, but it does not describe the project’s current status.
What was announced in June 2025
Hasbro said its subsidiary Wizards of the Coast had signed an exclusive publishing agreement with Giant Skull, a studio led by CEO Stig Asmussen. The planned game was a new, single-player action-adventure set in the Dungeons & Dragons world, in development for PC and console. The Hasbro news release of June 2, 2025 is the primary source for these terms.
The announcement included the following details:
- Deal type: exclusive publishing agreement between Wizards of the Coast and Giant Skull.
- Genre and setting: single-player action-adventure in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
- Platforms: PC and console, with no specific console platforms named.
- Technology: built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5.
- Title and release date: none announced.
- Budget, team size and deal value: not disclosed in the announcement.
Asmussen’s credits were a central part of the pitch. The release said he directed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, directed God of War III, and served as art director on God of War II.
Two executives framed the partnership in the release. John Hight, then President of Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming at Hasbro, said: “Stig and the team at Giant Skull are exactly the type of exceptionally talented creators we want to work with, and I’m so happy to be reuniting with him on this new project.” Asmussen described the aim as “to craft a rich new DUNGEONS & DRAGONS universe filled with immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal that players will fully embrace.”

What changed in 2026
PC Gamer reported on May 19, 2026, citing Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier and Wizards of the Coast, that the agreement had been terminated earlier in 2026. According to that report, Wizards told Bloomberg it had decided not to “pursue an early concept” from Giant Skull. The same reporting said Wizards remained open to pitches from the studio. The PC Gamer report of May 19, 2026 is the source for the termination and the reasoning Wizards gave.
The table below separates what was announced in 2025 from what reporting established in 2026. The two columns describe different points in time and should not be read as a before-and-after comparison of the same product.

What is and is not established
- Established: the 2025 agreement was announced, the planned game was described as single-player PC and console action-adventure, and 2026 reporting says the agreement was terminated.
- Reported but not independently confirmed here: the reasoning that Wizards chose not to pursue an early concept. The PC Gamer article does not name a Wizards spokesperson for that statement, so it should be attributed to the company rather than to a specific person.
- Not established: any game title, release window, development timeline, or whether any replacement project exists. Openness to pitches does not mean a new project has been approved or is in production.
Why the deal matters for financial readers
Publishing agreements are a way for a company to fund outside development in exchange for rights and control. Hasbro’s second-quarter 2025 investor presentation described the Giant Skull agreement as an investment in premium digital storytelling, talent and digital engagement. That is the company’s strategic framing at the time, and it does not show the project’s commercial prospects. The presentation’s company-wide figures are not project metrics and should not be read as a measure of this deal’s value.
Because no budget, expected sales or development duration was disclosed, the financial exposure of the agreement cannot be estimated from public sources. A terminated early concept means the spending tied to that stage did not become a product, but the amount is not public. The Hasbro second-quarter 2025 investor presentation is the primary document for the company’s wider digital strategy.

How to read announcements like this
- Check the date of every report. A 2025 announcement describes intent at that time, not the status today.
- Separate the company’s own statement from reporting that cites unnamed or unattributed sources.
- Treat “open to pitches” as a statement about future consideration, not a signed deal.
- Look for disclosed terms before assuming a value. Many publishing deals do not publish budgets or payment structures.
For this agreement, the verified facts are that it was announced, that it is no longer in effect, and that the project did not reach release.
