Lawrence Campbell alleges that he bought a winning Lotto 6/49 ticket, gave it to his then-partner Krystal Ann McKay for safekeeping, and was cut off after she claimed the prize. McKay disputes his allegations and says she does not owe him money, according to reporting on the lawsuit. The prize was reported as C$5 million—approximately US$3.6 million in The Independent’s 2025 coverage. The reviewed reporting does not establish who is legally entitled to the winnings or whether the case has since been resolved.
What Campbell says happened
Campbell’s account comes from allegations in his lawsuit, as reported by The Independent. He says he bought a Lotto 6/49 ticket on January 19, 2024, then gave it to his then-partner, Krystal Ann McKay, for safekeeping after losing his wallet.
He says he later found the ticket at a friend’s home, scanned its barcode with his phone, and learned it had won the jackpot. According to the lawsuit as summarized in the report, the couple were told he could not collect because he lacked valid government-issued identification and were advised to have McKay claim the prize.
The couple appeared at a news conference on January 30, 2024, where McKay claimed the prize. The Independent reported that McKay described the experience as “really overwhelming, exciting.” It also reported that she described the ticket as a birthday gift from Campbell. Campbell’s account, in the same report, was that McKay had asked him to buy a ticket for three weeks before he eventually did so.

What Campbell alleges about the money
Campbell’s lawsuit says the winnings were deposited into McKay’s account because he did not have a bank account. He alleges that McKay then ended their relationship and stopped responding to him. These are allegations, not findings that a court or lottery operator has verified.

- Let's face it you don't want to give someone a winning scratch off ticket that shows they won a million dollars on it, you would probably lose friends and family if you did that. We heard your complaints and made our winning amounts 10k and 50k. That allows you to choose between the good, the bad, but not the ugly.
- Includes a total of 8 tickets. You will get 4 of the "Big Time Millions" design, and 4 of the "Jackpot Jubilee" design. The "Big time Millions" is a guaranteed $50,000 winner, the "Jackpot Jubilee" is a guaranteed $10,000 winner. In addition to those winning amounts, each ticket also wins an additional $30 for the top game.
- Each ticket measures 8 x 4 inches and includes 2 separate games per ticket. The back is very realistic but also has plenty of info telling them it's fake after they read the fine print, it's hidden enough to fool just about anyone. We didn't just phone in the back text either, the back alone is a crack up.
- Printed using HRP Technology (Hyper Realistic Printing). Some other tickets look ok on the front but once you see the back you can see how fake they look. Compare the front and especially the back of ours to anybody else's, you can see we went that extra mile on our design for both sides. Includes barcodes and scan codes just like the real thing. For the final touch we also added perforation on the top and bottom for that real lottery ticket feel
- Makes a great gift idea. Great for parties, social gathering, work / office parties, holidays, birthdays and any other special occasion. Also great for when you are just hanging out with friends.
What McKay says in response
McKay disputes Campbell’s allegations. CTV News Winnipeg reported on July 2, 2025, that she had filed a statement of defence and maintained that she did not owe Campbell money. The Independent had earlier reported her lawyer’s statement that she disputed the allegations and would file a defence.
