For a business server, choose Windows Server when required applications, Microsoft integration, or your team’s existing skills make it the better fit. Choose a supported Linux distribution when the workload, staff capability, and distribution-specific support model meet your needs. Many organizations use both. Neither is universally cheaper, more secure, or easier to manage.
This comparison is about server operating systems, not employee desktop computers. Desktop application availability, endpoint management, and hardware support need a separate assessment.

Windows versus Linux for businesses: what matters most?
The practical question is not which operating system wins in general; it is which one best supports each workload over its full lifecycle. Start with what the application requires, then assess the people, integrations, support, deployment model, and total cost needed to run it reliably.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) recorded that almost all customers it spoke with described Windows Server as very important, while most also considered Linux distributions important. These are qualitative findings about the report’s respondents, not a representative measure of global market share. The CMA also found that most customers would consider both for new workloads, with reasons varying by workload and team. Read the CMA’s 2024 licensing practices report.

When does Windows Server make more sense?
Required applications depend on Windows
Check each business application’s vendor support matrix before choosing a server platform. A product that requires Windows Server can make the decision straightforward for the workload that depends on it. In the CMA’s customer evidence, commonly reported reasons for choosing Windows included software or applications that required it.
Your team already supports Microsoft infrastructure
Existing expertise can reduce operational friction, but it should be weighed against ongoing staffing and lifecycle needs. The CMA also recorded staff skills as a reason customers chose Windows. A platform that is familiar to the current team may still require a plan for recruitment, training, patching, incident response, and recovery.

You need Windows Server virtualization rights
Microsoft describes Windows Server Standard as intended for physical or limited-virtualization environments, and Datacenter for highly virtualized environments. Its overview describes Standard licensing as allowing two virtual machines plus one Hyper-V host per license, compared with unlimited virtual machines plus one Hyper-V host for Datacenter. The actual licensing outcome depends on the applicable edition and terms; check the current guide and validate the organization’s situation with a qualified licensing adviser or reseller. When does Linux make more sense?
The workload and vendor support fit a Linux distribution
Linux is not one operating system release or one support contract. Select a specific distribution and release, then confirm the application vendor supports it and that its maintenance lifecycle matches your requirements. Linux may suit workloads whose software requirements, flexibility, corporate standards, or open-source and community support align with the organization’s needs. The CMA recorded these among reasons customers gave for choosing Linux.

You can operate the chosen distribution reliably
Evaluate whether your team can manage updates, monitoring, security response, backups, compliance, and recovery for the selected distribution. If you run Linux in Azure, Microsoft documents different support arrangements for distributions including Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, with options that can include pay-as-you-go (PAYG) and bring-your-own-subscription (BYOS). Support scope and terms vary; check the arrangement for the exact distribution and deployment. Microsoft’s Azure Linux support scope.
Understand the offer and support costs
Open-source availability does not make the full cost of running a production server zero. Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Marketplace listing describes a free Ubuntu Server offer and paid Ubuntu Pro plans with expanded security maintenance and management features. That is a specific listing, not a statement that every Linux deployment or support arrangement is free. See Canonical Ubuntu 26.04 LTS on Microsoft Marketplace.

How to compare platforms for a real workload
- Inventory the workload. List the application, databases, directory services, integrations, and operational tools it depends on. Confirm supported operating systems and versions with each vendor.
- Map the operating environment. Decide whether the server will run on-premises, in a cloud, or in a hybrid setup. Include monitoring, patching, backup, compliance, security response, and recovery requirements. Microsoft describes Windows Server deployment across datacenter, Azure, and hybrid edge environments in its Windows Server overview.
- Assess skills and continuity. Identify who will administer the platform and how the organization will cover training, recruitment, escalation, and support through the workload’s lifecycle.
- Specify support and lifecycle needs. For Linux, name the distribution, release, and support arrangement rather than writing “Linux” in a plan. For Windows Server, identify the edition and verify the current licensing terms that apply.
- Model total cost of ownership. Include licensing or subscriptions, cloud image charges, support, staffing, training, migration, downtime, and lifecycle costs. The CMA recorded cost-effectiveness as one reason customers chose Linux, but that does not prove Linux will cost less for every business.
- Pilot critical changes. Before moving a critical workload, test application behavior and validate backup, recovery, and migration procedures.
Can a business use Windows and Linux together?
Yes. A mixed server estate can match each workload to its requirements instead of forcing every application onto one platform. The CMA’s customer evidence found that most respondents would consider both Windows Server and Linux for new workloads. Keep the decision workload-specific, and make sure the resulting environments can be staffed, supported, secured, and recovered.

What this comparison does not establish
The evidence here does not establish a universal cost winner, a global market-share comparison, or a general security or ease-of-management winner. It also does not provide a full comparison of Windows and Linux employee desktops. For desktop decisions, assess endpoint application availability, device and hardware support, and endpoint management separately.
