Windows 10 ESU: What Microsoft’s $30 Offer Covers Through October 2027

Microsoft’s $30 Windows 10 ESU option is a one-time US charge, not an annual fee. Eligible PCs can also enroll through settings sync or 1,000 Rewards points, with coverage ending October 12, 2027.

For eligible personal Windows 10 PCs in the United States, Microsoft lists a one-time $30 enrollment option for Extended Security Updates (ESU), plus applicable tax. But the offer is no longer just for “another year”: current Microsoft guidance says enrolled devices can receive critical and important security updates through October 12, 2027. Microsoft also lists two no-cash enrollment methods: syncing settings and redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. The choices and terms can vary by region.

What the $30 Windows 10 offer buys

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s consumer ESU program is a limited bridge for people who continue using an eligible personal PC while transitioning to Windows 11. In the United States, Microsoft says enrollment can provide critical and important security updates through October 12, 2027. The $30 price is a one-time charge, not an annual subscription, and applicable tax may be added. Microsoft’s current consumer ESU page lists the coverage and enrollment terms.

The “another year” framing is outdated. An earlier Microsoft end-of-support page stated October 13, 2026 as the ESU end date, but current US guidance gives October 12, 2027. Microsoft’s current US end-of-support guidance confirms the later date; the earlier guidance reflects the superseded one-year framing.

Ways to enroll and their trade-offs

Microsoft’s current US guidance lists three consumer enrollment methods. Check the terms shown on your PC: Microsoft says options and timing may differ by region.

Method Cost or trade-off
One-time purchase $30 USD, or local-currency equivalent, plus applicable tax, according to Microsoft’s current US consumer guidance.
Sync settings No additional cost; requires using a Microsoft account to sync settings.
Redeem Microsoft Rewards points 1,000 points, according to Microsoft’s current US consumer guidance.

Enrollment requires signing in with a Microsoft account. The $30 is not a yearly fee, and joining later does not move the fixed coverage end date: current US coverage still ends October 12, 2027. Microsoft’s ESU page describes the enrollment options and regional qualification.

Who is eligible

The consumer program is for personal-use Windows 10 devices running version 22H2, in most markets where Windows is available. Devices managed by an organization or enrolled in enterprise licensing programs are excluded from this consumer offer. Eligible PCs present the enrollment tool in Settings; follow the on-screen prompts and sign in with a Microsoft account. Microsoft says people can enroll until the program ends, but the coverage end date remains fixed. Availability and options can differ by region, so the terms displayed on the device are the practical check.

What ESU does—and does not—protect

ESU supplies critical and important security updates, as classified under Microsoft Security Response Center severity definitions. It does not add features, cover other types of fixes, or provide general technical support. Microsoft also says ESU does not extend Windows 10’s product lifecycle or restore support beyond the original support timeline. See Microsoft’s Product Lifecycle FAQ for Extended Security Updates.

A Windows 10 PC will continue to function after end of support, but it no longer receives regular security updates, feature updates, or general technical support from Microsoft. Antivirus software cannot replace operating-system security updates; Microsoft explicitly cautions against treating antivirus alone as a substitute. Microsoft’s end-of-support guidance explains what changes after support ends.

Should you pay, use a no-cost method, or move to Windows 11?

The practical choice depends on your PC and how long you intend to keep it. ESU is a temporary security-update bridge, not a permanent support plan.

  • Choose an ESU method if you need to keep an eligible Windows 10 PC in use during a transition and accept the program’s limited coverage and fixed end date.
  • Consider the no-additional-cost sync option if syncing settings with a Microsoft account suits you; choose the Rewards route only if spending 1,000 points is worthwhile to you.
  • Check Windows 11 compatibility before paying for a bridge. Microsoft says eligible existing PCs can upgrade to Windows 11 for free. If yours is not eligible—or you are ready to replace it—Microsoft suggests considering a Windows 11 PC. Its guidance does not endorse a particular brand or model. See Microsoft’s Windows end-of-support options.

Compare the cost or points you would spend with the value of keeping the current PC, the effort of moving to a supported system, and the fact that ESU only provides specified security updates until October 12, 2027 under current US guidance. For readers outside the United States, confirm local availability and the specific enrollment options shown in Settings rather than assuming US terms apply.
