But he also described the experience as pleasurable—and said he often seeks challenges like it.
What Dafoe said about the shoot
In an interview published by UPI on October 10, 2026, Dafoe described difficult conditions on the film’s locations in Nepal and New Zealand. Even when the cast and crew were not climbing, he said, they dealt with limited shelter, food that froze quickly, numb hands and deep snow. Putting on crampons could be difficult, and he said people tired more quickly at altitude.

Dafoe’s concise verdict was: “Was it challenging? Yes. Was it a pleasure? Yes. Did it push you? Yes. But all those things are things that I often seek.” He also cited physically demanding work such as cutting ice steps.
How the cast coped—and what Dafoe said about safety
Dafoe said the cast and Sherpas helped one another through the conditions. He also said safety staff were present to protect the production from real harm. That is his description of precautions on this film shoot, not an independent assessment of its safety or a guide to the risks of mountaineering.

The support did not make the work comfortable: Dafoe’s account still includes cold, snow, numb hands and fatigue. His experience prompted a wry conclusion: “It made me learn one thing: I have no ambition to summit Everest.”
Dafoe plays expedition leader John Hunt
In Jennifer Peedom’s Tenzing, Dafoe portrays Colonel John Hunt, the British expedition leader. Apple’s official film description centers on Tenzing Norgay, played by Genden Phuntsok, and Edmund Hillary, played by Tom Hiddleston, and the effort to establish Tenzing as a member of the British climbing team. Its synopsis also emphasizes differences in background, class, ambition and the mountain’s spiritual meaning.
